Liked this so much as a conscript in the Finnish military, that I bought one for myself. Been using it for a long time, maybe 20 years or so. As good as new, it's virtually indestructible. I also almost always use an inflatable mat on top of Savotta mat. Not the most lightweight solution, super comfortable and good insulation from the ground.

I came to the exact same conclusion after years of trial and error at high altitude. The Finnish sleeping pad combined with the Klymat inflatable insulated pad make an excellent combination. They work well with a range of sleeping bags and quilts depending on conditions.

Man I lover your German Flecktarn Jacked. One Tip: I have the Gore Tex Rain Weather Layer from the Austrian Army, that is the best Rain gear I have. It is much better than the German one, if you can look for it, you will absolutly love it.

Small tip: this thing is meant to make any "outside" floor more comfortable. It will not make a hard wooden floor feel less like a hard wooden floor (ie not recommended for indoor usage).

Thanks for enduring and educating. In my youth(many decades ago), I tried sleeping out in the winter with blankets under a picnic table with my dogs. Experiment failed. Fortunately, I was at my parents house then. Opening the back door was my fortunate option. Actually, I have the FDF Pad on the way. Be well.

Nice tips . Like the look of that pad . I've recently been using a foam pad and an inflatable . Works well takes up a bit more space and adds a little weight but you know you'll be comfy and ok if inflatable fails 👍 . Take it easy

A ground sheet is one of your best friends out there. Currently using a surpluss rubericed poncho under a regular mat. Having the gromets and snap fasteners does add versatility, as I use another poncho as a lean-to and just snap them together and stake through both gromets. Also, the camo on that tarp seems to be ideal for rocky areas above the treeline, just grass and rocks up there

This FDF mat looks like a really nice package. The Static V is also a great mat which makes a huge difference. I've had a similar journey with winter bivvying, finding out the hard way that I really needed more ground insulation, so hearing you talking about that rough night you had - yeah I've been there. For anyone reading this who might be starting out with winter camping or bivving - a good ground mat will make a huge difference, also I find building your sleep system around insulation you can wear (like the Jerven system or Helikon Swagman) helps as getting into a cold sleeping bag will remove a bunch of your body heat straight away.

Funny thing I find is that although warm and comfortable with various gear, the night forest is totally alive, like the Grinch I say NOISE, NOISE, NOISE !! Then in the early morning hours, when the symphony ceases, the Crows begin there ritual banter. Sleeping in the forest is kind of a myth, but once you are absolutely exhausted sleep becomes a no-effort event. Sounds of the night just get toned out and one becomes deaf. The forest party is great for the nocturnal beasts of nature, Diurnal not so much. Cheers!

I like the Savotta. It's a great, no nonsense mat. Has an r-value of 4 too. I used to use an air mat with it, but having to reduce weight due to surgeries and age, though I'll not swap out the roll mat..

In Finland this mat r-value is usually ranked as 2. Sounds physically impossible that 12mm (~half inch) thick closed cell mat r-value is 4. But nevertheless it's a very solid and durable mat. Quite heavy ofcourse, but it's designed to last as military use.

I use a different inflatable, but set up exactly like you do. These old bones can't do the wool blanket on top of branches anymore

One thing a lot of us forget, including myself, is the FPF pad, like many others, are supposed to be used together with broken off branches as a first insulation on the ground and then having the sleeping pad for winter use. In the military here in Scandinavia you take branches from fir trees on the ground first. The FPF pad is durable enough to handle the abrasion but also ads to the side flaps for extra feature. Using the pad itself for winter use is no good

For this 60+ its the FDF ( r2 about ) then the mss gortex bivy and The Carinthia's defense 4 and the Tropen bag with the Sea to Summit Camp Plus Self-Inflating Foam Sleeping Mat Tapered - Large (78 x 25 x 3 inches) r4.3 in the bivy. R6.3 for this old lady is nice. I sleep good and warm its big and heavy but it's ok for me. If I sleep cold I am a 🐻 and watch out !! 😆😂😂😆 this old lady is old school / Gorilla proof all the way! It's kept me alive with my 50 years experience so why change. Great video 🐻🤗🐻🤗

I think it is better suited on the ground, Spook. The inflatable Klymit pads are good for hammocks. Personally, I like running both, the FDF pad on ground, and then the klymit pad inside my bivvy. The combo works really well like that.

@EnduranceRoom that's what i was thinking ....I have a Canadian Forces Bivvy And CF Ranger blanket/poncho liner for the ground ....long story but a bunch of my gear got displaced I had a thermarest trail scout I liked but I actually have been looking a the Klymit gear so I think I might end up getting a setup like yours that way i can use the V pad in the Hammock too....definitely think the Savvotta is a better on the ground but I like it so if I can save up who knows ...thank u bro I appreciate you and always look forward to your content 🙏

60 euro.. If you like to do DIY option Jula sells nice thig pad 20 euro add to that some nice mat for 10 euro.. Savotta pad is good and tough hands down but pricy option.

Military gear is durable but always heavy and bulky. I dropped all the gear i got from my time in the army and replaced it for this reason. For example my sleeping pad weighted 938 grams while my civilian sleeping pad is 340 grams and both are good for winter conditions. So when all items in your backpack are like this it adds up significantly. It's all dead weight you carry over long distances which you pay for with your knees.

Hm, you know I really appreciate my oldschool German army mountaineer rucksack, which I upgraded with some ammunition bags, to get some more liters out of it. I also got a big Savotta rucksack, which is not suitable for riding a bicycle and for having just a couple of days of outdoor activity (more suitable for weeks). Anyway, weight becomes a huge problem in the colder seasons and when I read what people are carrying (and paying), I wonder what's essential bushcrafting about that. It's more like happy camper stuff (no attack intended, I'm just expecting a more primitive and practical approach). It becomes an unreal struggle, which demands more water and food to consume imo. Food and water is another weight issue, but with a water purifying system like "Grayl", you can at least wander around without having shops nearby/making annoying detours (in case boiling suitable water is not an option). So what would be the option, if making warming fires is sorta illegal and too revealing, since there is a lack of huge wildness (not like in the US and Canada) and chopping logs of wood to build a super tarp isn't an option either? There must be some essential solution like soldiers are using, when they are on a small group mission. I'm owning a Polish Lavvu, so I'm not forced to sleep under a tarp (more weight again), but that damn cold from the ground makes my head spin, because I keep on searching and can't find a straight answer to the problem. I don't need luxury, all I want is functionality. At home, I sleep in my bed without a pillow and my mattress is very hard, that gives me sorta the advantage to lay flat on the ground without anything. Just to get a picture. I only need secure sleep, in a way that I don't accidentally freeze to death. That would suck. haha Cheers!

I highly recommend the insulated Klymit sleeping pad. It reflects your body heat back at you. For a ground sheet, I use a military space blanket. In cold weather, face the mylar side up, sleeping pad on top or inside sleeping bag. The space blanket can be pulled up over the sleeping bag for extra warmth. Extra socks, wool hat and long underwear. 🤝

sounds like a painful mistake man.. I love savotta stuff, i have a lot of their gear like the 202, the Jaakari S and L, pouches etc. Just think this thing fails on almost all attributes except durability and warmth. It's bulky, heavy, uncomfortable. Although that said, I love the way their bags look and feel but they also suffer from being a little of those three things too. I'd rather pack the Klymit V and a bit of tyvek (~100g), and if it was really necessary, a small bit of thinner, lighter closed cell foam (40g) that you can use separately as a sit pad alone.
