In this video I make a simple plinth, pedestal, podium or box (in miniature) using 12mm MDF which I plan to paint. It's made with my students in mind so I explain some of the processes as if you are approaching making for the first time or with little experience. That said the method, and reasons behind making can be applied to all the said variations. These type of objects are used when presenting work, objects, artefacts or while doing performances.

There were lots of tips within this video that I have picked up on and will definitely be putting into practice. I thank you for taking time to show us how you would do this project because, probably without realising, you hand out, not just tips on how to do things properly but also the correct order to go about doing the job. Thanks again pal. N.

I promise in the next video I will stand on the box! Anyway some time codes if you want to skip to 00:39 - the tools. 01:27 - the theory. 07:10 - the practical demonstration.

Yiassas Savvas, This was very good and it's exactly the kind of pedestal that I will be needing to make for a sculpture that I shall soon receive. I have made pedestals before where the lid (and foot) was an oversize feature but this time I want the top to have the same dimensions as the column. In the past I have used dowels and glue but nails and glue is faster. You provided many useful tips (especially alignment) and I shall be watching the painting video, since I'd like my plinth to be white and featureless to contrast with the Giacometti reproduction (Walking Man) I have bought. I thought you might be an art and design technician. I also do a similar job but help science and tech students as well as art and design. We always do mitred plinth boxes but when I first started I said that they should be butt jointed and biscuited together. Altendof saws help mitres though!

We are a special breed. :) This way it's easy to dismantle and recycle the material. Students are often quite particular about the sizes, and there's no space to store stuff so they have to make them. But it's a good learning exercise. I should make a mitred one just to prove I can.

I would like to see a video of a tall pedestal that would work outside in a West Coast Rainforest where we get so much rain.

Any tips on painting the edges? It takes me around 6 coats and sanding to not have a crumbly wensleydale edge.

You need to use a hard paint like brilliant-parmesan.

or use a sanding sealer, i just use slightly watered pva and sand it myself, or melt some kraft cheese slices, whichever you can find

That's what I do as well, but the cheese thing is only for special occasions!

I'll give the parmesan and pva a go. I use oil based undercoat, about 3 coats before its near good. I've got 45-50 drawers to make, meh!

I am American of Irih parents. Weirdly, I own the identical hammer. When and where did you purchase? Curious as to whether it belonged to my now deceased father. Thanks!

You forgot to wear a respirator, MDF dust is very fine and will get onto your chest if not carful

I think there's some already some in there :( but masks are only really effective when properly fitted and without beard or stubble... so good extraction, air scrubbers, keeping the pad flat and breathing through your nose make a big difference.

Why do you need to mark the line with the tool?

Helps keep the my nail line centred and the nails bursting out the side face.

Do you have a particle counter? I bet that the airborne dust goes up a lot during the sanding, even with the vacuum attached to the sander. And given that it is MDF, you really should be wearing a respirator. The goggles and hearing protection are nice, but the respirator is the important thing.

I find that if the extraction is good and you are sanding with the pad flat it will be minimal. Of course wearing a mask as long as you don't have a beard will always help but I also have the air filter in the workshop too. Will put it to the test though.
