Nice to see I'm not the only one who still thinks in inches and feet. I had to do the same thing... grab my phone and work out the conversion! Just got this saw and I'll be out in the woods tomorrow. Can't wait!

Well, I actually learned both systems in school as it was right at the time Canada switched to Metric. But my main audience is in the USA, so I convert measurements a lot. P.S.: You are going to love this saw. Mine has been wit me for 5 years and is still my favorite.

I have been using one of these for trail clearing etc for years now same blade I did make a nylon sheath which is very handy it still cuts like a razor , I would not use any other saw ,an amazing tool well worth every penny . last summer i cleared 20 to 30 trees at the top of Mt Hoffman and it was almost relaxing to do so a great all round folding saw.

A sheath would be very handy - I've been looking into making one. And after a few years of heavy use, mine is still sharp too. Love this saw.

@@AlbertaBushcrafter I picked up some cordura fabric some web strapping for a belt loop and set to work on the sewing machine i installed wide velcro for a closure and its so handy i have no idea why silky dont make one. a word of advise though when sewing velcro do so from the back of the material not the front hahahaha took me a while to figure that out.

I was very interested in the Silky line of saws. I have used several and they are super sharp and can make quick work of hardwood. I have also seen them break really easily. They seem to be made from a thinner metal than some of the competition.
@AlbertaBushcrafter7 жыл бұрын
I've investigated that, and it's all due to technique. I actually did a video on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWHRqZ2elst0q9U . The reason behind the Silky saws breaking is because people are using a pull saw as they would a regular saw and that's just a plain ignorant bad idea. The blade on pull saws is thinner so if people push the saw through a cut, there's a greater tendency to bend or snap the blade. When Silky and Corona both say "don't push the saw through a cut", they really, really mean it. Use the saw correctly and this will never happen - that BigBoy 2000 has done literally hundreds of cuts in the past year. The only time I've seen it bend is when I got fatigued once and let my guard drop for a split second and treated it as a regular saw while cutting through a big log. I lucked out there and caught myself, then took a break.

I have cut I would guess between 100 to 200 trees with my BB2000 and no end of fire wood. same original blade. They only cut on the pull stroke and just let the blade do the work never had any trouble.

What size teeth do you buy for green wood & seasoned wood ???
@AlbertaBushcrafter6 жыл бұрын
The large teeth do a good job on both types and that applies to all Silky saws from the 170 mm to this 360 mm one in the video. Silky's Large teeth are 6.5 tpi (teeth per inch) while their XL teeth are 5.5 tpi. There isn't much of a difference there, but I find that the XL teeth are better on larger logs (over 6 inches in diameter) while the Large teeth are more suited to smaller ones .

That's a nice saw. After watching a lot of videos on Silky saws, I was looking to get a 170. But being in Northern Ontario they are hard to find without ordering it online. I was a MEC in the spring and they have the 130 & 240. So I picked up a 240. It's a little heavy for what I wanted but what a great saw. I might pick up the 130 as a " leave in the pack " saw. I find with the 240 I think twice about bringing it. Good review Dean thanks.
@AlbertaBushcrafter7 жыл бұрын
Funny, but when you mentioned the 170 the first thing I thought was "maybe he needs a 240 instead". The 130 is a tiny but aggressive saw and the 170 outperforms everything else at that length, but my go-to saw before getting the BigBoy 2000 was the GomBoy 240. I never begrudged the extra weight, and I've even taken down trees with the thing.

alf3553 in northern Ontario you may wish to carry as much saw as you can, I know here in Alberta a large saw and full size axe are worth the weight most days.

Is the entire handle steel with a plastic cover? or is the handle just plastic? Im wondering if it is steel the entire length and how sturdy is the handle when cutting. Will appreciate any input..
@AlbertaBushcrafter6 жыл бұрын
This saw has a steel blade, but to save weight it has an aluminum body. It's a very tough saw and the body can take a ton of abuse. It's also the most common saw used on the TV show Alone.

As soon as I'm able to financially, I think I'll do just that! I've been itching to get one for over a year but recent home repair expenses have made it impossible. Hopefully later this year, though.

I was thinking about getting a KatanaBoy 650 myself. But stay tuned - I found a 600mm Korean version for about $100 CDN last year and it might be just as good. More to come.

The Silky Saws are pretty sweet, although I admit that I still dont own one. The short Corona saw that I had like yours I gifted to a friend after failing to kill it a couple years back on fresh pine.

I have the 7 and 10" Corona saws now. Not as good as a Silky but still great saws.

Well, you won't be disappointed. Since the original 2015 Saw Shootout, this has become my #1 saw. 3 1/2 years and it's still going strong and sharp. I'm convinced nobody makes saws like Silky. And I'll check out the video too!

Say Heah Eah, Howdy Dean, Yes'ur I have the Silky Bigboy 2000, I also ended up buying the one fits all sheath for it. I sort of hesitated buying the Katanaboy those larger Saws, Infact I bought my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw instead with Scabbard and a extra aggressive blade that fits in my Crazy Horse Scabbard,. I also have the Wicked Tough Saw which size wise is similar to my Bacho Laplander but stronger and doesn't bind as much. But I also got my new EZ KUT WoW Folding Saw, Yup another cut on the back stroke but when you get the rhythm it's one of the fastest saw I've seen. It's a 10incher and sort of similar to the Carona Razor Teeth Saw, But the teeth are much different Infact it's how they arranged the teeth that makes it that fast. It did take a little practice to take full advantage of the saw just getting the rhythm and Blip, Blap, Blam your through what your cutting and that fast.,,. p

It sure is. Mine got a lot of work this weekend, so it's almost time to do a video on sharpening one. Not as easy as it looks.
