they use a synthetic pyrethrin called d-cis/trans allethrin. you can purchase real pyrethrin and mix with water to refill the sponges assuming they are still in good condition. the real stuff however has a strong smell.

I’m not sure if you will see this but I have found success by attaching the adapter onto the thermacell fuel cartridge and then pushing the butane bottle onto the adapter/fuel cartridge when refilling!! Ty for conair tip!!
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter 9 күн бұрын
That works with some, but with most, you have to disassemble the cartridge and remove a plug first. It isn't difficult, but it takes a bit of finesse.

Can you tell me what you are notching?
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter 13 күн бұрын
I'm notching the tip of the tip adapter on the butane can. This allows a tiny gap on the sides of the adapter so the gas can come oout. Without doing this, sometimes the pressure against the safety valve compresses the adapter enough so no gas goes into the cartridge.

The specs looked very good so I got one. Got in it and the only mod I did was to look at the 4 extra reinforced areas on the ceiling of the fly and saw where the 2 top short poles attach. The male end of the poles does not always fit into the reinforced fabric area. It can get a bit off if the fly is not perfect. So, I put strips of gorilla tape on those areas to add width to the area. So, the pole ends should never get on the regular single layer fly. Other than that, I'll get better stakes but that's always a need for new tents. It staked out, went up fast, easy, and the fly has a lot of ties for high wind stability. A ground cover will help. The tub floor seemed good. Don't abuse the zippers and take care of it and should be a great tent. The two doors should help with anti condensation
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter Ай бұрын
Thanks for all the great information! I noticed the same thing with the fly, too. I got the actual footprint on sale, but anything will do. In fact, I read a suggestion once to make an inner footprint out of Tyvek, so I may try that. As for stakes, I bought the inexpensive off-brand stakes from Amazon at about $1 a stake. The exact same ones sell for 7-10 times that if they're MSR or another big brand. Other than that, I've had this tent for several years now with no issues whatsoever. Still worth every dime I paid for it!

I bought my Lansky kit like 28 years ago. I hated it then and watching this video reminds me that I still hate it now. 😂 Stupid bendy rods that always come loose in the stone clamp and the stupid clamp you have to keep moving along the blade if you actually want a consistent bevel across your knife and the angle holes which are so big the bendy rods wobble around inside. It's such a fussy, poorly-implemented system. Learn to sharpen on a flat stone. Done.
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter 2 ай бұрын
The flex in the rods is a valid point. But a good set of large stones of any decent quality is going to set you back well over $200 if you want more than a couple grits. (Mine are Norton, and they cost that much for 4) But having said that, you can get an excellent pair of Japanese pocket stones (1000 and 6000 grit)in the $60 range, and the green stropping compound can be found at $15 for enough to coat an old belt for several years. That's how I sharpened my knives for many years and it works fine.

Cant the pads be used with a candle and eliminate the thermacell?
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter 2 ай бұрын
Theoretically, yes. But it would not be easy. The very small butane burner heats a metal plate, which vaporizes the insecticide on the pad. And from the looks of it, a candle would actually be too hot. Marginally possible but I would not take the risk. It's actually a lot safer just to refill the cartridges, and you'd only need a few of them to keep the unit running for a long time. And once a cartridge is modified, refilling it again takes a minute or less.

I get the same results. I also stopped by Hattersley Wicks. Don’t get me wrong, they’re very good. But the 6 foot rolls I get from Amazon from $5 to $7 work well. I honestly don’t see any brightness or runtime advantage to the more expensive Wicks. As far as the lifespan of the Wicks, I don’t see any noticeable advantage to the more expensive Wicks. So, I get the Wicks that have the best price at the time I order. Thanks for sharing your results, it’s most appreciated.

This tent has been around for over a decade now and has undergone multiple improvements like better doors, 4 interior pockets, 50x87 floor space, newer 2 tone color fly’s, etc. But the overall rugged design remains the same and the price hasn’t changed much at all, currently $185 U.S. and can often be found for $129.99 during the peak of winter. But once Spring nears the price jumps back up to $185 to $220 (without footprint & only 10 stakes). It’s a heavy tent at 6 lbs for the 2-person version but the quality is top notch. The latest version also has loops in each corner of the ceiling to instal a small 3rd party cargo net. I don’t think North Face offers one but at least they added the loops so you can instal your own. Quality control is excellent with no loose threads, all seams are taped and sealed. Hands down this is the most rainproof tent I’ve ever used, period. It should be called the “StormProof 2” as it really is that good. My only complaint is it can be miserably hot in the Summer, even in the shade. It has ample ventilation to combat moisture build up, but not enough to equal ambient temps. Even with the fly removed completely, it’s still a bit warmer inside the tent than outside. It’s definitely a cool weather tent.
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter 3 ай бұрын
Nice update - thanks! I know they updated the color, but the loops inside for a gear loft are a nice touch. I'd recommend getting a third-party loft, as they usually work.

Some of these do not have a manual seal function. It isn't impossible to seal smaller bags with these but it's a challenge. Try looking at the front of the machine and see if there's a sensor or trigger that switches on when the bag hits it. If so, then that's where you want to put the bag for sealing.

Keeping it dry after using it, or drying it out completely is the key to making tents like this last. I think this tent may have been stored just damp enough for the bacteria to start eating away the coating. But I'd owned this tent for many years before the coating broke down. You should be OK. I now have two other tents older than this one, and they are both still going strong 18 years after purchase. 😲

Can anyone please tell me where I can get a GOOD 7/8" flat wick? The one that came with my Dietz is EXCELLENT. I ordered twice from 2 companies (one twice as expensive as the other, thinking "you'll get what you pay for", which wasn't true. That company being Light of Mine which was advertised as the company that made the wick in my Dietz. NO WAY these are the same wicks. Absolutely no. ) on Amazon. These wicks are terrible FLATTENED HOLLOW TUBES that only allow half the brightness I can get from the wick in my Dietz. Turn it up any higher, and the wick itself burns away in literally about 20 seconds. I could blow through 100 feet in one night at that rate. Any suggestions would be HIGHLY appreciated!

Good information. I just finished cleaning up several really old, really filthy lanterns. After a great deal of chemical analysis and scientific reasoning I wound up using the only can of spray within arms reach. Sea Foam top engine cleaner/lubricant. I sprayed them, left them set for a couple hours, scrubbed with an old tooth brush, wiped them off. It softened all the crud, didn't harm the original finish and left a nice sheen. Wadded up newspaper used dry will remove the soot nicely from the globe too. Just my two cents worth.

Gotta say it. WD40 is rust protection and a rust losner. It's not a lubrication, yes it lubricates a bit but it's not a primary lubricant. Grease is for high friction and oil is for rotating parts and a rust on bare steel protector. As a watchmaker, I've seen a lot of clocks drenched in WD40 and it's simply a myth that has to go. I agree it works in a pinch, but it's not a long-term lubricant.

A quick fix for a leaking fuel cap is to add an O ring sized 7/8"od X 3/4"id with a wall thickness 1/16". Also some Deitz lantern do not soften or grind the edges of the globes so the sharp edges should be sanded with a silicon carbide sandpaper to prevent adding red to its color.
