That was an excellent review of the SawStop. I’ve had what’s now called an ICS for over 12 years. It’s one of the original (black brake) units made back when SawStop had only one model. Mine has held up extremely well and has survived one move without any issues. Back when I bought mine the fence and pigtail were extra. I bought an Incra fence and my electrician installed a long cord with twist lock plugs to match the 220 outlet that he installed. I chose the 5hp motor because at the time that was only a $100 upgrade. In my opinion it wasn’t necessary but since I spent so much on the saw the upgrade was a no brainer. I got my SawStop after showing my wife the SawStop videos. She was sold immediately and didn’t care about the cost. It’s proven to be an outstanding choice and I really enjoy using it.

Wow, what a great testimonial to the saw and it's quality. I'm glad that you are still enjoying your saw and although they seem pricey at first, once you get the opportunity to work on one, you will understand some of the price point. It's not just about the safety feature but it is also about a damn well built piece of equipment. I don't regret my purchase one bit and I'm sure that you don't either. Thank you for tuning in to the show and for taking the time to leave your comment. It's appreciated.

Great review Kenny. I have the same saw and love it. I think the deficiencies you noted are fair. I'm also 6'2" and an undisclosed weight, I definitely agree with the access panel comment. But not having a need to open it since day 1 setup, I forgot about it. I want to give a thumbs up to the upgraded fence, I thought I would end up wanting an after market fence but after a year of use in various projects, the SawStop fence is rock solid, it's not leaving my say any time soon. I'm so glad I spent the extra for the 220V/3hp, keep the blades sharp and it cuts like hot knife through butter with anything. Which is also inherently safer. Finally, I think we just have to accept rating table saws should be on a scale of 9. as you said, none of the manufacturers are able to give a decent mitre guage. I was just surprised SawStop hasn't teamed up with Incra or someone to provide the complete package instead of giving us a part most will end up not using.

I enjoyed your review. I have owned the 3hp PCS for about 4 months so not a lot of mileage on it yet, but I have used it a lot in that time. I replaced a 14 year old Delta hybrid mostly because that saw didn't have a riving knife. On my miter gauge there is a fine tune screw for the positive stop. I have not had to open the small access panel, it does look like it could be a pain to work through. No issues with my side table either, after all the gripes about it I was expecting a pretzel, but I think it's plenty flat and strong for what it's intended for. Thanks for taking time to do the videos.

Thanks for taking the time to do this video I appreciate this information as I look to upgrade my table saw, do you think the 1.5 hp would be ok our shop I stick with the 3hp 220? My problem is my 220 plug is currently not in the best location and the cord would be a trip hazard across the floor
@acutabove_woodworkings2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure whether or not the 1.5 HP would suit your needs or not Julie as I'm not sure what your needs are. A 220volt receptacle can always be relocated closer to the saw and if the only thing stopping you is the cord of the saw, that issue is easily remedied. I know this isn't much of a help but good luck with your decision and thanks for tuning in to the show.

I thoroughly enjoyed your honest review. I currently a Craftsman Professional table saw with a Biesemeyer fence, 1.75 hp. it's been a great table saw once I stopped using the worthless miter gauge that came with the saw and replaced it with the Incra 5000 miter sled. For a couple of years now, I have been having trouble with the motor. Craftsman no longer makes replacement parts for this saw. So next couple of months I plan on replacing this saw. I have narrowed my search down to either the Powermatic 3 hp or the Saw Stop 3 hp. Your article is pretty convincing for the Saw Stop. One question I have is regarding the blade: what blade do you use on your saw?
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
I use whatever blade I feel like in the saw Ed. I have the original SawStop blade that came with the unit and I also have several Diablo blades (painted red) that I use. I have a Freud stacked dado blade set that I also use with a dado brake and I have a couple of Forrest blades that I'm rather fond of. Basically, I haven't found a blade yet that wouldn't work with the saw. It's easy to test if a blade will work or not. Just install it in the saw, apply power to the control centre and with the saw turned off, touch the blade gently with your finger. The control centre will start flashing quickly to tell you that it has had a contact with flesh. I hope that this answers your question. I'm glad that you enjoyed the review and if you have any other questions along the way while trying to decide which saw you'd like to purchase, please don't hesitate to ask me. I'd be more than happy to help out if I can. It's a lot of money to spend on a tool and if I can make you feel better about spending that money (either on this saw or another one) then I'd have no problems answering your questions. Thanks for tuning in to the show Ed and taking the time to leave the kind words.

Hi Kenny, thankyou for an excellent and thorough in depth analysis and review, living here in Ireland the SawStop is not available at the moment, i went the Laguna Fusion 3 option as my local tool centre is a Laguna Dealer and i have to say that the two cabinet saws are very similar apart from the Stopping Safety feature of course. l design and make bespoke furniture and mainly work with English Oak and the 3horse power is plenty on 240v the mitre gauge or mitre square is the only part that is average compared to the rest of the saw, the Laguna 3 runs surprisingly quiet and does all I need from the saw, anyways I hope that I have not bored you, kindest regards Louie Ulster Workshops Uk

Very nice, clear, useful review. Great video & audio quality, too! I've seen lots of SawStop PCS assembly reviews, and this was definitely among the most thoughtful, useful, and well done. My only question is only 8/10? Even though you go through your rationale, I think the things you don't like are very minor. The short cord you fixed. One time and problem solved. The small access panel, as you said, frustrated you during initial setup. But that's also pretty much one and done, not something that bugs you an a daily basis. The other 'negatives' (eg plastic knobs on the blade height and angle adjustment wheels and the serviceable if limited miter gauge) are, to me, extremely minor. I downgrade a personal review primarily on things that are substandard compared to the competition and/or that cannot be easily (and relatively inexpensively) prevented or fixed. And while I understand your desire to avoid 'blade safety' wars in the comments, based on your review, that has to count positively. So I would have thought maybe an 8/10 on set-up (and to be honest, even that seems stingy), and at least 9/10 overall based on your comments & experiences. I guess you'd give a "modern" Delta Unisaw, what, maybe a 5 or 6?? Anyway, not trying to be negative this video was EXCELLENT!!
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
My goal here Steve, was to give an honest review of the product and I honestly feel I have given that. I have yet to find a tool that deserves a 10/10 and that is the thing about reviews....they are like movie reviews and they are just the opinion of one person. That opinion can vary for many different reasons. The saw itself functions flawlessly and I absolutely love working on it. The "minor" points that you bring up are ones that, if I am paying the extra cost for a well built saw, I don't feel that the manufacturer should have skimped on the accessories. Plastic knobs when everything else is metal, a mediocre mitre fence when a higher quality one could have been provided. If you (SawStop) are going to class yourself in amongst the top saws, you have to make it about something more than just your safety feature. After all, we don't spend our time trying to cut our fingers off....we spend our time adjusting blades and cutting stock using the rip fence and mitre fence. When paying that kind of cash for a unit, having to spend more money to bring it up to a standard that should have already existed is worth a couple points of loss in my mind. Don't get me wrong Steve, I love this saw. I also appreciate the honesty of your comment and I welcome it. I'm not about online arguing and I know that everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it. I actually love the fact that you are coming to the saw's aide and questioning the lower score. Would I purchase this saw again? 100%. Do I regret purchasing this saw? Absolutely not. It just goes to show that we can all have an opinion and still get along. So in the nature of compromise and "getting along", how about we meet in the middle and I will give it an 8.5/10. LOL. Thank you for tuning in to the show Steve and taking the time to leave such an awesome comment. It's good folks like yourself that make the show well worth all the effort to produce. Thanks again.

Kenny, first I like your honest review. Full stop! But, a couple of your issues, have workarounds. That access door, ICS. The Industrial saw has 2 LARGE access doors. Miter gauge, get a miter table. SawStop makes one, and I have installed a few. Will overcome ALL your miter issues. Another question, you said 8/10. Do you rate ANY OTHER 10 inch table saw higher? I do not own a table saw, with the exception of a 70 year old Cast Iron ShopSmith. (8 inch, tilting table, the original Model 10.) However, I work at the retailer, for the east (Phoenix Az) valley area, and have assembled quite a few, and repaired even more. I DO have experience with woodwork, just no longer own any major tools. (I borrow from friends. Shop size, limits me.) I still think the SawStop is the best table saw made, at any price. (And, the rest are vastly cheaper.) steve
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
You have to keep in mind Steve, that a review is nothing more than someone's opinion and although I might give it a score of 8/10, there are others that might give it more or less than I did. A review of a tool is just that, a review of the tool as it comes from the manufacturer. It is not a review of something that you can "work around". I wouldn't give a tool extra points just because I could put out more money and fix it myself. The review is given for the tool as it is provided from the manufacturer. That being said, I love this saw and have "worked around" the issues that bother me. Knowing everything I know now, I would still purchase this saw again. It's a quality saw the functions flawlessly. I haven't reviewed any other saws, simply because I don't believe in reviewing something unless you have had a good chance to work with it over some time and get to know the ins and outs. I only review what I know. Too many KZbinrs review things right out of the box before they every have a chance to work with the product. That's not a review, that's an unboxing. LOL. I hope this has helped you and answered your questions. Thank you so much for tuning in and for taking the time to leave a comment. I truly appreciate your input.

Excellent review. I have looked at many since I am in the market. I am a hobbyist and thinking the 1.75 hp might be enough. Always comes down to the money. I have been looking at Harvey and they have a spectacular miter gauge (they now own Bridge City and looks like BC made it) That saw is $1000 less but I keep thinking about the safety feature of this. I am super super safe and actually cringe at some of the popular KZbinrs I follow as they come too close to the blade for me. But your review was spot on in explaining it is an excellent saw without the safety feature being considered. If I bought it I would have to buy the Harvey miter and maybe the slider as it is so much nicer than the SawStop. But thank you. I see you are a Lee Valley fan which I am as well. Is that infra red heater from them? I am getting ready to do electrical work in my garage and add a heater. I have to talk to my electrician (my wife's cousin) to see if easy to put in the 220. On the fence about the power...But thank you so much for your review, the best I have read thus far. I will subscribe.
@acutabove_woodworkings2 жыл бұрын
Glad to have you as a subscriber Brian. You will love the Sawstop regardless of what horsepower you choose. It is still a quality saw. I know you state that you are VERY safe but sometimes, the wood has different ideas of what safe is and can suck people into the blade during a kickback. Whatever you choose, stay safe. As for the heater, yes, it is from Lee Valley. They are great little heaters if you are standing directly in front of them but if you are purchasing it to heat your garage, you might want to research other options. I have two of these and I use them for spot heating. If I am sitting at my scroll saw for a couple of hours, I can point the heater directly at me until the wood stove finishes heating the place. Definitely wouldn't count on it to heat the whole garage though. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

For so long I was debating with myself if I should buy it or not. I was looking at Powermatic, Jet, Grizzly, Laguna. I went to Lavergne TN to check the Powematic and Jet(they are pretty much the same thing, same company, I won't get into arguments which is better or not, I'll just say most of my big tools are white-lots of money saved over the yellow), I even went to Springfield MO to check the Grizzly ones. I've seen a Laguna at a Woodcraft store and I saw the Sawstop in multiple locations. Ok now....as far as build quality i can't say which one is better, sincerely it looks like the all come out of the same factory, only they have different colors and some little design differences here and there. Now the price is a big difference Sawstop and Powermatic are right on top. If it wouldn't be for the safety feature I would go right away and buy a 3HP Grizzly for under $2000. But when it comes to safety I just can't push the Sawstop away, so today I finally pulled the trigger and I bought a Sawstop PCS 3HP. One of my passions is music, I play keyboards, I just can't afford not to be able to play my synths anymore because of even the slightest possibility of an accident. Here's my 2 cents why I bought a Sawstop and not any other ones. Actually there's another saw even better than this, made in Austria, Format Kappa4 which has even a crazier safety feature based on magnets reversed polarity, but that saw starts at $35.000...so that's out of reach for now. I hope my little coment will help you decide what's gonna be your next saw. Good luck and keep safe!
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you were finally able to make your decision. I have no affiliation with SawStop or any other manufacturer of tools so I have nothing to gain by you purchasing a PCS 3HP. I do know that if you love your SawStop as much as I do, you have pretty much purchased your last table saw. The peace of mind of knowing that those safety features are there are priceless. I too play instruments and I can completely relate to your comment about wanting to keep your fingers safe to be able to play another day. Good luck with your new saw and enjoy. Thanks for tuning in to the show and taking the time to leave your comments. It is very much appreciated.

Hey Kenny, as an electrician I have a question. My temporary shop doesn't have 240v but is next to the laundry room so I made an extension cord from my dryer to my 3hp sawstop. I just left the neutral disconnected. Thoughts?
@bondfrenchbond4 жыл бұрын
I mean, it works like a charm... Also in Ontario.
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
One of the biggest problems that I can see here Francois, is voltage drop. In order to keep the voltage the same, you would need to increase the cable size in order to compensate for voltage drop. I would think that running an extension cord from the dryer is a bit of a pain in the butt and while theoretically your cord would work, it really isn't the best method of doing this. You would be far better off to run a new 240volt line from your panel to your temporary shop and use a properly sized cable to allow for the voltage drop from there. Electricity is nothing to mess around with and taking short cuts will only cause problems in the long run. I hope this helps and I thank you for tuning in to the show.
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
It would definitely work. I just prefer not to take shortcuts when it comes to electricity. To each their own I guess.

Can I ask you about your dewalt planer in the background on a low shelf. When you want to use it, do you just lug it onto a higher surface or do you keep it and use it low? Or something else? Thank you
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
Of course you can ask about the planer. The DeWalt planer is a heavy machine to have to lug around so I just don't do it. If you look carefully, the planer is actually upside down. That is because it is on a flip top tool stand that I constructed. I have a short video where I demonstrate how it flips and you can find that here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH68q5t_ibaBgqM Although the planer in the video is the DW734 box planer, it is the same stand and the same concept. It makes it a lot easier to handle and saves a ton of space in the shop. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks for tuning in to the show. It's truly appreciated.

Phenolic resin top if I'm not mistaken, if so its what we use on are concrete forms and it will scratch (so will steel and superman) but its tough stuff, and not cheap.
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
I will most definitely say that the side extension table is NOT phenolic resin. I have a router table top that is phenolic resin and the stuff is unreal. The extension tables on the SawStop are a wooden frame with a formica type laminate top. I can't say for certain as to what type of laminate it is but I can say that it most definitely is not phenolic resin. The zero clearance inserts however, do have a phenolic resin core to them with is nice. Thanks for tuning in. P.S. I'm glad that you edited your comment because I had no idea what you were talking about with Superman. Darned auto correct. LOL.

@@acutabove_woodworkings Picked up my sawstop today. Rockler had exactly what I wanted in stock. your review helped me decide on the 3 hp. I ordered the industrial base. wondering whether I should wait for the mobile base before I put the saw together. Any advise? Thanks
@acutabove_woodworkings3 жыл бұрын
@@lobird23 The mobile base needs to be installed on the saw by getting access to the bottom of the lower cabinet. For this, the saw needs to be tipped on its side. Now while it is completely possible to install the mobile base after the saw is assembled, it is much easier to install it before assembly starts. If you are going to install the base after the saw is assembled, you will need to unbolt the extension table legs and fold them under the saw. Then you will need to tip the saw over so that it is resting on the large fence rails. From there, you can get access to the under side of the cabinet to install the foot pedals and interior mechanisms for the lift. Once they are installed, you can tip the table back upright and finish off the installation. It's a little finicky to work on after the saw is assembled but it is totally possible. I hope this helps.

I too own the same saw you reviewed, though I bought mine used. My last saw was a Powermatic 66 but since it didn't have a riving knife and there wasn't a clean way to add one I decided that I'd buy a Sawstop to replace it. I was prepared to pay full price but was fortunate to find one locally that was used and like new. The only complaint I have is with the extension table, the formica has delaminated on the edges and looks like crap, granted it still functions but for the price of these saws they could have done better. I also agree on the short cord, but honestly that's a cheap and easy fix in the scheme of things. Overall I agree with your review 100%, it's a great saw with the added benefit of the brake system. Thanks for the great review, it's always interesting to hear another users take on them.
@acutabove_woodworkings5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words on the program Larry. I'm sorry to hear about the de-lamination of the extension table and I have to wonder what the previous owner did to cause it. I would suggest contacting sawstop and see if there is something that they can do for you. The extension table is not a very expensive part and at the very least, maybe they could sell you a new one. Just a suggestion. Thanks for tuning in and for taking the time to leave a comment. I truly appreciate it.

How often have you dropped the nut and if you do is it an hour long game of hide and seek or ezy to find
@AlbiesProductsOnline5 жыл бұрын
I was really looking for an answer rather than a like but thanks anyway
@acutabove_woodworkings5 жыл бұрын
I can recall dropping the arbour nut a couple of times Barnezy and I can honestly say that I had it back in my hand in about 15 seconds. The blade is surrounded in a dust collection shroud with a 4" port at the bottom of it. The dust collection system does not have the power to draw a large nut like that through the collector hoses so it ends up resting in the hose in the saw's cabinet. The hoses have a quick release clamp which allows me to disconnect in, remove the nut and reconnect it within seconds of dropping it. The access to these hoses is through the very large motor cover, located on the left side of the saw, so access isn't a problem. Thanks for tuning in and thanks for chiming in with a great question. I truly appreciate it.

does it sense your fingernail or glue covered finger?
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
The saw senses anything that is conductive. That's your finger, finger nail, finger with glue on it or a metal fence or miter fence. You have no worries of this saw protecting your fingers, regardless of where they might contact the blade. You might still have a little knick on your finger, but at least you will still have your finger attached to your hand. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Dado blades are illegal in some countries? WTF?
@acutabove_woodworkings4 жыл бұрын
Sadly Jason, that's a fact. I don't know how many countries but I do know that they are pretty much outlawed in the UK. I have no idea what the reason is but from what I am being told by my British viewers, they do not have dado blades in the UK and they are not allowed. Strange. So I guess its a router table for the dados in those countries. Thanks for tuning in to the show. I hope you found it useful.

There are plenty of good quality saws on the market that are not in the price range of the Sawstop. I had a Ridgid saw for many years that was fantastic. I never had a problem with it and it was around the $500 mark. Keep you eyes open on your local kijiji site to look for used equipment. Sometimes all it needs is a little tune up and they are good as new. I hope you find a saw that you are happy with. Thank you for tuning in to the show.
