Why is the fantasy sequence secretly the most revealing part of John's character? Because even in his fantasies, he imagines his subject will fail. Because deep down, more than he could ever admit, John wants to see his victims suffer.
@jazzenriquez9827
@jazzenriquez9827 Жыл бұрын
This is just my take, but I personally feel like this is actually a peek into the nihilism John wrestles with internally. He at the core struggles with believing humans will stop being so selfish-- he wants to think otherwise but can't when constantly witnessing atrocities. With the janitor example: he believes that if the young man were to continue his bad habits-- and have such a personality to match-- then he will surely fail when put through a test like Kramer's. (He ultimately doesn't commit the morally wrong act, hence dismissing the gruesome thoughts against him) It is the times when John is proven wrong where he is pleasantly surprised by humanity (and usually in his corrupt ways as well, ultimately justifying his processes taken to get there). Because of this, I think the fantasy sequences are showing John's inherit expectations of what selfish people would go through, rather than some twisted craving he is trying to satiate

Okay that was my least favorite part of the movie and I think you actually made me understand and appreciate it. Seeing him imagine the guy fail but then see him make the correct decision under duress (noticing that John is watching) subtly reinforces his view that he is making these people better, the flaw with it being that that guy probably didn't learn a thing, except to be more discrete next time. It would be interesting to see a saw movie where we see the survivors of his various games and if any of them actually changed their nature in the long run.

@@hichaelhyers I don't think it ruins the lore. Tobin Bell said John sees the traps as tests, not ways to torture people. John has always been more of an antihero than a villain. Half of his games are psychological and don't involve any physical harm. Adam, Eric Matthews, Jeff, Amanda, Hoffman, Rigg, Strahm, Cecilia, Parker Sears, and a few others all had psychological games.

2:53 I think it was extremely smart to not use de-aging technology for this movie. De-aging them for the entire movie would have been a huge hit to the budget and might not have even turned out well. Also we see far more Tobin Bell in this film than any previous entry, so even if the effect was good, it would distract from his INCREDIBLE performance. His acting totally sold me on the idea that this is the same guy in Saw 1 who's declining but not nearly in the dire situation he is in Saw 3, where Tobin is actually younger.

Definitely the most brutal of the movie in terms of being visceral. I honestly felt all the other traps were quite tame, but their simplicity and tameness made sense since this was before all the big extravagant traps of the franchise. IT fit the timeline well in that way.

Absolutely. Intense. However...it was one of those traps that I couldn't *quite* suspend disbelief. I mean...self-amputation at mid-thigh? Another case of blood loss/passing out would just kill her. One of my personal, yup, just kill me now with that whole beheading thing. Maybe the marks were a kind of misdirection. She probably could have acquired the marrow from somewhere else in her body. Maybe. I loved this movie, so in the end, it all worked for me, and I did have to look away a lot. Well done and well acted.

One thing I really liked about this movie is that while it makes you sympathize with john more, it doesn't get rid of the fact that his god complex is really at work here. He was pretty much ready to stop trapping people (via the park scene) and 'testing' people just because HE finally felt free of his problems. It was never actually about the principle, it was always about john. This movie is so layered and complex, and has made my appreciation for the characters of john kramer and amanda SHOOT up. loved it so much

i agree, i think it also really works in the pacing, and especially for people who never saw another saw movie, it almost works as a plot twist if you don't know anything about him. he's this frail old man, you feel sorry for him, then he's fucking jigsaw. i loved it.
@HorrorLover

@@fx7105 Imagining saw X being the first movie of the franchise you see would actually be interesting. From the start, you see that this frail old man has disturbing thoughts about people who do wrong in his eyes (via janitor scene). After he's scammed by this fraud medical company, the perpetrators start getting kidnapped by a mysterious figure in a Pig mask. Eventually Cecilia is kidnapped, and when she is sedated, he pulls off the mask to reveal that the old man was working with the kidnapper Then the rest of the movie becomes piecing together his twisted morality and relationship with his mysterious accomplice. Plus the fact that they wouldn't expect the classic saw twist, so it wouldn't be that obvious to them. It could be a fun time to watch this as your first saw movie lol

I think the twist being predictable is one of the reasons this movie was a lot better than the rest of them for me. Well, I kind of disagree. I think a lot of us saw this twist coming is because we know how these movies work. I also think that's the reason lot of people love the first one by far the most, because no one saw coming the dead man in the room was actually Jigsaw. I think the twist of the 2nd one (with the other timeline) was also awesome. After that, it was 'predictable' that there would be a trick in the timelines, an 'unforeseen' situation actually been foreseen or the reveal of an apprentice. Why I liked the Jigsaw movie really well, because they put all 3 elements in the big twist (so you know there will be some twist, but you don't expect there are actually 3 in 1).

Actually to me, in the timeline, it made sense John Kramer looked this old, he technically is closed here to dying from his terminal cancer than in any other movie, so he should be a lot weaker. I love how much Jigsaw we got, the moral debates with Amanda, the anger as he engages the victims, the dialogue was just so good! As for the traps, I agree, that one was crazy and most intense, when that leg dropped, it was absolutely horrific. The brain stuff though, oh boy, that was one of those traps you yell at for being unfair to let's say Amanda's trap. It was hard to watch for me. But I think this movie did really well in balancing the brutality between each trap. I love how Kramer admitted it was a huge miscalculation about the child, and as messed up as that was, I absolutely love they went that hard. John's phrase to that kid afterwards, I teared up, haha!

He is still a hyprocrite and the attempt to humanize him even more is silly at best. "Oh, I kinda like Gabriela, let us help her, we are saviors!" So what do they do to the already addicted anxious girl that clearly lives a terrible life; they traumatize her, make her maim herself so she can probably never work, and on top off that burn her face so badly she'll probably never look into a mirror either. Yeah, surely she'll never do drugs again. Couldn't even make sure she gets the help she needed and so she died. Don't get me wrong, I still liked Saw X, but their attempt to make him the good guy was veeeery forced - literally took them one of the worst characters on screen this year to have someone worse. Also, even Saw 1 established that Jigsaw has no issue involving innocent children, that may or may not get harmed due to his games. What did Gordon's daughter ever do wrong?

i didn't mind her aging that much. they could've done a way better job with lighting, it was actually unflattering on her with the harsh shadows so it made her look worse, if they tried to make her look younger it could've worked. in the interviews the actress looks good. but i don't think it was worth spending resources just on that, it's irrelevant in the long run. i don't think this movie should be watched in order by anyone since it ruins at least two plot twists with revealing that amanda is in on it in the second one and hoffman in whatever one.

this is a long rambly collection of my thoughts below- i feel like this one could be a fan favorite for sure. i love saw and John’s character and saw x reignited that love for me. i almost wanted to cry when he nearly sacrificed himself for that little boy and the boy likewise saved John. a scene like that makes me feel like i could be a badass like that as well if i’m ever in danger in life. saw inspires me in several ways the one thing that personally irked me about this movie was Cecilia’s character, i feel like her evilness so to speak was spoon fed to the viewer. i was going «yes yes, you’re the bad guy, we get it» in my head while watching her deliver some of her lines. it was a bit exaggerated imo. but that’s really my only gripe. i loved the fact that this movie centers around John for once and Tobin really deserved this too, he’s so great as Jigsaw and i just adore him. and Cecilia talking norwegian was the coolest thing to me since i’m norwegian myself so my life is pretty much complete now. even though, why would she talk in norwegian to her british boyfriend, like did he understand her ? i digress lol this was the first and only saw movie i’ve ever seen in theaters so it was an emotional experience and i will keep having saw marathons throughout my life. spoilers for most traps and plot twist! and SA mention later in the comment! I really liked it! I like how when they kidnap the players, Mateo Gabriela and Valentina are not in super luxurious situations. they are working, getting drugs... with smaller or darker spaces. meanwhile Cecelia is in a massive luxurious modern house with lots of lights and space counting the money and showing the audience that it's a scam. Ever since the beginning, Cecelia is less sympathetic than the other three players, even though we know they all scammed Kramer. It kind of feels like foreshadowing. I've also seen someone in a comment on another channel say Cecelia told the others how to pass their traps incorrectly, as though she were intentionally sabotaging them, which makes sense to me. The gigli saw is supposed to be wrapped around the leg and then pulled in one quick move. Hitting the hand would have had her on the floor instead of dangling, which would have made it easier to avoid the radiation. The brain surgery, she told him to pull on the brain piece when I think he could have used the saw he used to open the head, which would have done less damage to the whole brain I think (I don't know anything about brain anatomy), and quicker. I think they could have played into this for the twist even more, like a montage of Kramer knowing she's setting them up to fail. SA mention!! I really felt the SA near the beginning was weird to watch. I believe the only other thing close to it that we've seen in Saw films is when the perpetrator is in the trap and has to remove his eyes and his crime is on the screen. In this, she goes through getting attacked right before being saved and then immediately put in a trap. idk it felt unnecessary and weird, and like it was making Valentina go through something similarly traumatizing before putting her in a trap.

I liked the film a lot but i think recency bias is causing people to love it more than every other my biggest issue was frustration They all completed what was asked of them in their trap and then either died because of an insane time limit or through being murdered And the one person they let live I think we all wanted to see die has been left alive I assume for a sequel It *maybe* cracks my top three Mostly because of tobins acting

Honestly, I think the insane time limit is on point. It *was* frustrating this time, because they were oh so close, but... time limits are like that throughout most of the series. John wants you to cut off a body part and gives you 3 minutes? Seems in character. As much as he prides himself on making his games winnable, some of them... demand superhuman reactions/pain tolerance to win.

My exact thought was the same as you, why are they letting us see John in such a vulnerable almost timid state when we have seen the first movie so know what he is capable of. But i think its as you also said, this movie is FOR THE FANSSSSSS of saw. They gave us every single thing we wanted and allowed us to root for our PeePaw John

I couldn’t have filmed this video better myself. You caught every single I felt about the movie, although I loved the leg trap because of how gruesome it was. I also love John Kramer as a character and when he was in the trap with the child, you get a true sense of what’s in his heart because he refused to let the kid be hurt. It was really nice to see. Saw TEN (lol) was definitely the best of the franchise.

Loved your review, Sarah! I agree with almost all of your points, and it's the strongest Saw in the franchise! For me, it was also the best use of Amanda's character as well. Amanda was either a victim or a caretaker in Saws 1-3. We never got to actively see her learn from John, and build their relationship beyond Saw 3. It's hinted at, a lot, but we don't understand all the situations they've been through to build their close bond. This was a great taste of that.

The things that made me adore this movie were the fact that there was zero police storylines, we see John and Amanda work together in person, and that we hate the victims for what they’ve done but also feel bad for them, something that was less apparent in later instalments. They also did a fantastic job with the villain, I do wonder what they’ll do with her character if they do actually bring her back

I can definitely agree that this movie was GREAT for an installment of this franchise in 2023. The traps were brutal and not only did we get more background for John, but we also got to see him be vulnerable in a way that we have never seen before. I really appreciated that once we got into the traps themselves that it LOOKED like a saw movie, it's something that I feel the films later in the franchise strayed away from. I also felt perfectly fine with the fact that they didn't de-age them for this movie, the odds that it would've actually looked good are slim and them looking the way they did didn't throw me off in any way. 3/5 for me, wondering if I would like it more upon a rewatch.

Last month I watched all of the Saw movies for the first time ever and this one was definitely the best! I enjoyed watching most of them, but this was the one where I felt like they were really nailing everything that the previous films each did best, but now in a single package. I also just love how much time they took before we got to the first real trap. It felt very mature in that way; like they trust us to sit with John Kramer for almost an hour and have empathy for him and just appreciate the drama of the story, and THEN it becomes a revenge gorefest. That was a risky choice and i think it totally paid off.

@10:52 I believe that his innocence and naivety in the first part of the film was intentional because of him being blinded by hope that he is gonna be treated of his cancer. I think it was a perfect execution, and it lets us see that he is indeed human despite being evil and sometimes hypocritical, that we see him be clouded by the view of hope, same as how we all could be blinded by hope as normal humans. Basically, it humanizes his character a tad bit IMO.

I made my brother watch the first three Saws in order to prepare for this one and both me as an older fan and him as a newer one, we loved it and grinned throughout like half of it. We specifically avoided watching anything about it and it was a great choice because the clinic being a scam was a surprise and sort of a twist too. So much good fan service that made this one so enjoyable and for me it's definitely one of the best ones in the franchise. I loved seeing John as a protagonist, but one criticism we've had was that there could be even more exploring of John and Amanda's weird relationship and John as a person outside of his sickness. 5/5 for me too!

My main complaint about this movie, and it can be said about others (Amanda having to cut someone else open compared to having to do it to yourself), is some traps don’t seem fair comparatively. Like cutting off your leg and sucking the marrow out within 3 minutes seems so much more brutal compared to cutting bombs out of your arm. Almost like he was easier on certain characters than others. And these traps are so unwinnable, almost like Amanda had made them 😅

The directors said that for them, this is really Saw 2 and takes place only a few weeks after the events of Saw 1. It wasn't even bad compared to some of the older ones, I just don't enjoy watching people suffer like that anymore. Not to say that I actively enjoyed it in the past, just that I wasn't phased by it. Maybe it's just that the torture phase of horror has been over for a while, so tolerance to it has gone down? I'm not sure, but I did enjoy the story/film over all.

Great review! I agree with most of what you said, except that for me personally, I didn’t see the movie’s portrayal of John as a kindhearted, caring, and even overly trusting person to be inaccurate to the character at all. We’ve pretty much only ever seen John at his lowest points. Right after the death of his unborn son. Right when he attempted to end his life after his cancer diagnosis, etc. But here, we finally got to see not only John just going about his daily life, but actually being *happy* for once. For that brief period when he thought the treatment was going to save him, we got to see what the *real* John Kramer was like, before he became a twisted serial killer. He was back to what I assume was his old self, and was even most likely going to put a permanent stop to the games, as demonstrated by him tearing out and ripping up the page of his sketchbook showing what would eventually become The Rack. It’s just that unfortunately, what *truly* pushed John permanently and irrevocably over the edge, was the realization that he wasn’t nearly as good at reading people as he thought he was, and that if even seemingly kind and good people could turn out to be monsters preying on the weakest people in society, the infirm and dying, then *anyone* and *everyone* deserved to be tested to show their true moral character, no matter how big or small the person’s infraction was. From murderers, to violent skinheads, to white collar criminals, to smokers.
