This movie proved that Tobin Bell is a STAR, even at 81 years old. I agree that X is one of the best in the entire franchise. I genuinely didn't expect it to be as good, and effective, as it was.

Amazing the intersections with life here. Tobin Bell at 81 felt he still had "so much work to do". And then arguably gave us the best Saw movie of the bunch, since the early days.

The series definitely shot itself in the foot when they killed John Kramer in the third one. He's a standout horror villain for me because he has an actual philosophy, an edict that he lives by as he does these terrible things. All the other antagonists who came after in the series had relatively generic reasons for putting people into traps. Kramer is one of the few horror antagonists whose agenda has some actual philosophical intrigue behind it, one that can be considered flawed from a number of angles, but it's still interesting to see in a genre that's know for its one-note killers that just kill for the sake of it. This movie is definitely starting off on the right foot by recognizing their golden goose and putting him at the center of the story.
@Digger-Nick

He doesnt have a philisophy though, the first 3 movies proved that. He doesnt care about who he kills or puts in a trap, one of the biggest plot holes of the series.

To be fair, im sure they didn’t know they were going to make 10 movies lmfao. I think the original plan was just a trilogy which is why they killed him off, but they could of left it more open at the end just in case they wanted to make more, instead we got convoluted plot lines and Hoffman to make up for it smh

@@Digger-Nick I will admit his reasons can be pretty arbitrary most of the time (One guy he just threw in for smoking). But it's still interesting to me how his violent actions always go back to his core philosophy of finding an appreciation of life through intense life/death situations.

This movie finally felt like a Saw movie for the first time in 13 years. I’m happy they were able to get Hoffman back into the story, albeit for a small, but crucial role. Although Saw is my favorite horror franchise, I feel that by the end of the original 7 films, there weren’t many loose ends and as viewers we already know the fate of almost all characters in the franchise. This leads me to believe if writers will continue to make new installments, we will receive unnecessary information about a story that already ran its course long ago.

One thing I really appreciated about the movie is he reveals that he was a civil engineer. He may have revealed that in earlier movies but for those of us who didn’t catch it or don’t remember- it gives insight into how he’s able to design and execute these traps. *spoiler* I looked at the traps of the movie slightly differently with this info. The eye pull trap for example, an engineer would have to have excellent physics knowledge to pull this off, or the chemical reaction traps for example. Loved the movie, highly recommend under the influence of certain substances 😅

Since the other ones relied on the shock value/reveals to give insight on what put all the potential victims in their respective traps. Big props for mentioning the simple thing near the end. The fact that it looks and feels like a Saw movie is a big reason why I’m excited to see it. Saw 8 aka Jigsaw didn’t look like a Saw film AT ALL. Too bright, too soft, too clean. The normal colors were gone as was the grit. Spiral looked a little more like a Saw movie (being directed by Darren Lynn Bousman of course, director of Saw 2,3 and 4), but that was like a Saw movie trying to look like Seven, if you know what I mean. This looking legitimately like a Saw movie was the second thing that got me excited, after Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith both returning and having bigger roles of course.

Im happy they finally gave us Tobin Bell back (not as a flashback). just wish it wouldve happened sooner. Each movie i was hoping in some way theyd figure out how to bring him back in the flesh, but instead each Saw made it more certain that he was gone. I know this is Saw 1.5 but its better than every saw after 3 because we actually have Bell in the drivers seat. As much as i love the franchise, im in disbelief that it took them 6 movies to figure out that the OG Jigsaw is what majority of fans wanted

I guess if you really wanted a "logical" way out of the notion that they both went up into the room and took the money to trap themselves, then you can consider the fact that the torture rack was designed for both villains to be trapped in, but that was under the assumption that the one villain wouldn't try to reclaim the gun. So if you want to imagine, there may have been a third trap, or another layer, hidden somewhere that was not even revealed because it didn't need to be revealed. A stretch but given what is known about that sequence it's entirely possible.

That's definitely one of the biggest issues with the franchise after John/Amanda are killed off. John's apprentices often don't give their victims a chance to survive so the traps lose a lot of their appeal. Doing a story in between #1 and #2 fixed that issue immediately.

John Kramer/Jigsaw is far from a flawlessly written or executed character, and to say that the franchise which made him a horror icon is messy would be an understatement. But Tobin Bell is without a doubt one of my favorite actors to have ever struck fear into me and I'm grateful that we get to see him step back into his most well known role at least one more time. If this was his final appearance, I wouldn't complain. I can only hope that the IP owners will commit to a definitive ending for the films when the day comes that he's no longer with us. History's already proven that the hole left by his absence in Saw is very difficult if not impossible to fill. Every time they've tried to so far with a Jigsaw successor or copycat, it's fallen short.

Such a great entry into the series. Finally took the series back to what made it great instead of just trying to follow the same formula of increasingly elaborate traps with as much gore as possible. They had suspense, and character development so we actually had a real sense of why these people were put in traps to begin with instead of just throwaway characters to get the death numbers up like the franchise had been doing for many years. The series had really fallen into the self-parody trap of trying to constantly outdo itself that losing the essence of what made it great to begin with. Tobin Bell was always the only Jigsaw, and the series never was able to reach the same heights with the other killers. The simple is better approach to the storytelling is so refreshing for this franchise. I was a little irked with how little time he gave the victims to escape their traps so it felt like they had no chance to escape, but the writing really put us on Jigsaw's side here by making it so personal with what they did to him. I also felt the twists at the end relied too much on foresight of relying on characters to behave a very specific way which wasn't believable. This irked me as well, but I guess it wasn't as ridiculous as many of the other movies in the franchise had done.

At the end of the day, I think the way we can play off the whole “well if he did this, then the whole movie would have ended” can be justified by the genius mind of John Kramer. It was Leigh Whanell, he wrote and starred in the first film as Adam, they reworked an already written script and turned it into saw 2 and then he wrote saw 3 to kill everyone off just because he didn't wanna work on the series anymore. One flaw with this saw movie is if a person fails the test simply because they lacked an extra literary 1 second or 2, through Kramer’s eye they didn’t have enough will to survive. It felt so funny to me to see Jigsaw and Amanda Young as the Protagonists rather than the Antagonists in this film. As the film began, I felt so bad for John trying to find a cure for his Cancer. He was so innocent he was willing to take a chance on anything if it even sounded like it could cure him, and it was tense when John found out he had been scammed and flew into an angry rage. The end was genius and the post-credits scene was even better!

I just got out of watching this and I thoroughly enjoyed it! And I especially love how this sits in the canon of the franchise. If you watch them in chronological order, we go from Saw, a film where Jigsaw is the elusive villain that traps our protagonists in a ruthless and horrible game, to Saw X, a film that humanises this very sick and twisted individual, and makes you feel empathy for them and helps you understand their side of the coin. Then watching Saw II from now on, it will show both sides in perfect balance, as that was the film that really introduced Kramer as a character beyond that dead body that got off the bathroom floor, and so you can understand both Matthews and Kramer’s positions in a much more profound way than before. But having said all that, it definitely still stands as a good film on its own. I am immensely satisfied with that result, really solid film!
