I have a similar rig I built after looking at many DIY designs other wood hounds had made. One thing I noticed you may want to consider is putting the limb at the end to start instead of setting the saw down and moving it to the end part way through. I realize some of the wood will be way too long for this, but I always put mine at the end to start. As you pointed out, I put the dogs against the wood so it doesn't pull it. Mine I made to mount in a metal 4 x 4 post holder that is driven in the ground which makes it less portable but more stable than merely sitting on top of the ground. I wish I could put a picture of it here but I don't see an option for that.

Hello, Tony, I have been wondering what most folks in the firewood business do with short pieces that appear at the end of a log that is being bucked up into say 16 " lengths. I would think that there is often that last piece that won't make another 16" round. Maybe you have a piece left that is only maybe 9" or even 6". Just what usually happens to these "orphan" chunks of wood? Are they wasted? Is there some reasonable use for them?
@TonysCoolTools2 ай бұрын
Dave, the term used in the Woodhound community for the small piece is called a “cookie”. I collect those small pieces in a separate IBC tote and use them personally in my outdoor wood boiler. Hello. One thing to admit, I have four chainsaws for my firewood business, like You Tony I'm a Stihl guy. By the way, I speak German, so most people pronounce "Stihl" wrong because in German language letters ST sound like SHT, it should sound "SHTil" as we speak in Europe. My chainsaw are 029, MS 180, MS 462 and battery powered MSA 220. In my opinion the best chainsaw for limb wood is the MSA 220, because it is light, no pulling to start and for small wood it has plenty of power, its engine has 2,1kW, that's enough. Maybe problem is the price but it saves your health, since I bought this chainsaw I use it the most if the wood isn't too big. I'm from Lithuania so I paid for my MSA 220 430 euro, I took 2 batteries AP 300S that was 300 euro for each, and I had to buy a loader that was 150 euro. I bought MSA 220 in November last year, in this spring Stihl has released the bigger battery AP 500S , I paid 400 euro for that. I needed the bigger battery for my leaf blower because it sucks the energy really fast. Now I use this bigger battery for my MSA 220 and I can cut more than a face cord of wood into rounds with one charge. The only thing to keep in mind the chain has to be sharp or the battery won't last as long as it should be. I wanted to add that when I bought my MS 462 this year I paid about 1000 euro for the powerhead, a 20 inch bar and two chains. The MS 500i was about 1300 euro for the chainsaw, the 20 inch bar and a chain. The price is the same at the moment. Greeting from Lithuania. Good luck for You🙂.

Ignas sounds like you’re as passionate about firewood as I am. Thanks for letting me know the correct German pronunciation of Stihl. I know how it must hurt the German viewers ears listening to us Americans mispronounce the name. I will make every effort to say it correctly in the future. Battery powered saws are here to stay and I’ll probably invest in one of the kits out there. Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

I totally get it, I had a number of viewers request a review and since I had one I thought I’d do a video and just give the facts and let people make up their own minds. I think I’ve used it 3 times in the last 8 years. Really appreciate you watching and commenting 😂TCT

The term “need” is relative. Lol… If that is a splitter it’s definitely more mobile than the Axis so I’ll guess the Eastonmade 5-11 ?

Tim good guess, you’ll have to watch Sundays video to find out🤔 Really appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

I think a 261 is over kill I'd use my 30 year old 017. Brent
@TonysCoolTools2 жыл бұрын
I use to use the 261 for limbing because it was my lightest saw I had until I got the 192 top handle. Now that’s practically all I use for limbing. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

That thing under cover looks like Eastonmade Ultra 😆

Btw, for so small limbwood i use my buzzsaw. Much faster and cheaper to operate. Great video like always!
@TonysCoolTools2 жыл бұрын
@@loodusefilm7881 I would love to have a buzz saw especially if it had its own engine and not have to be hooked up to that PTO. You’ll have to wait until Sunday to see what’s under tarp but the Ultra is a really good guess. Thanks for watching and sharing what you use. 👍TCT

I like it cost?
@TonysCoolTools2 жыл бұрын
The cost is about $90, I left an Amazon link in the information section . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

May be a back saver, may not. The limb just doesn't jump into log holder.
@TonysCoolTools2 жыл бұрын
Yup you’re right, you still have to bend down and pick up the branches, but you definitely save on possibly hitting the dirt when cutting limbs on the ground. I just wanted to show an option that is available. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

I'll be honest, all of the logs that would fit into that, I bring to the dump lol. I guess I'm just a wood snob these days!

Ha ha Nick Im Scrooge when it comes to wood, hate wasting anything especially with the cost of propane or natural gas. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

But how does it work with a bucksaw,,it's easy to use maybe with a chainsaw??? Seems a bit wobbly to me
@TonysCoolToolsАй бұрын
It would not work well with a buck saw. They are a bit wobbly but you can put some weight on the bottom leg which will help stabilize it. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

Need a smaller chainsaw to cut that size logs

Jeff you’re definitely right. I try to use my top handle saw which has a 14” bar most of the time. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
