@@ahhhabee it's because a creature dies to damage only when state based action are checked, and they are checked after the spell finishes resolving and the last part of the resolution of an istant/sorcery spell is putting it in the gy. Basically the game never "sees" the damage before the spell is in gy

Former L2 judge, here. I haven't dealt with this specifically, but I believe the P/T setting ability of Saw in Half completely overwrites the goyf's characteristic-defining ability (CDA). So if you Saw in Half a 5/6 Pyrogoyf, you'll end up with two goyfs that are permanently 3/3, regardless of what happens to the graveyard afterwards. The actual implementation of the following rules is worded differently in the comprehensive rules (CR). The version I'm providing here is the underlying philosophy that the actual rules were built to reproduce. The two (philosophical and technical) understandings are identical with only one exception: identifying "creatures with no abilities" for cards that care about vanilla-ness. I'm sharing the philosophical version, because it's easier to remember and easier to apply. CDAs function equivalently to having the appropriate changes written on the affected part of the card rather than in the rules text. They're written to the rules text purely to get around the physical limits of what can fit on a type line or in a P/T box. So changeling cards behave exactly as if they had all types written out in full on their line type, and goyfs behave exactly as if their rules text was written out in full in the P/T box rather. Things that copy, alter, or remove rules text don't interact with those abilities at all. But things that overwrite types or P/T directly always take priority over CDAs. P/T-setting effects like that from Saw in Half work the same as printing out a sticker with a P/T written on it, and putting that over the P/T box. Since the P/T box is effectively where the goyf ability is written, the */1+* completely disappears from the card if P/T are set by anything else.

I had to double-check myself because MTGO isn't working that way currently. But I can now 100% confirm that MTGO is wrong in how it handles this interaction. A gatherer ruling directly confirms that P/T CDAs should not be copied by Saw in Half.

I firmly belive that saw in half is much worse in Petal/Mox/Ritual decks. These decks need to slam a threat every turn until they run out of cards and when one of those threats off the top or last in their hand isnt playable because you have no creatures then that is a problem.

In round 1: If we had gone into forge for turn, when opponent goes to cast command we could’ve played to the out of saw in half on Cave’s of Chaos Adventurer which would’ve pushed the room into trap in response to opponent trying to kill with command going into game 3. 13:17 time stamp. Just wanted to drop it in the chat, thanks for the awesome content, I don’t even play legacy, but genuinely enjoy the content and game play you create!

I did some math and that gives us 3 shots at a 7/34 ratio of gamewinning cards or ~61% chance to find one (draw for turn + 2 from ring with 3 Saw in Half, 3 Pyrogoyf, 1 Adventurer being hits) whereas Lost Well gives us 5 but only 3/34 or ~44% so that's a massive difference. That's also not accounting for Saw in Half being instant speed to beat K-command

Also… -4 Fable of the Mirror Breaker +4 Unstoppable Slasher Sawing a slasher in half gives you three deathtouchers (the third is delayed by two turns) that are all must blocks. This deck has eight four-mana spells that it wants to cast, and 18 land, 4 Mox, 2 Lotus Petal and 4 Dark Ritual. I think I'd cut some one-shot accelerants for simply more lands, because realistically this deck needs to cast multiple spells to win. Cutting one-shot mana for lands would also mitigate colored mana issues.
