Any Sawyer that whips out a dial indicator to check anything on a sawmill is okay in my book. Great topic Robert! We're cut from the same aerospace cloth. I like the indicator jig by the way.

About 1.5 years ago, I was having issues milling spruce and white oak with 7 degree turbos. I switched toe 4 degree and no problems. Sometime later I was speaking to a Resharp tech who said they had some issues with blades being set improperly. My next trip there I brought the suspect blades to be checked and sure enough, the set was different from one side to the other. They reset all of them. I never considered the set gauge but just ordered one. Thanks Robert for another informative video.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama9 ай бұрын
Sure glad to help. It is not unusual to have brand new bands show up with an incorrect set, considering how they are made. A good gauge answers a lot of questions, and also a lot of self doubt. It aint your fault when the band is crap.

Love the videos we run a mill in the UK 🇬🇧 and your videos are very knowledgeable, would love to see more milling videos of different timbers like sycamore and elm etc.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I kind of make the videos based on the technical difficulty of the species being sawn, so I will be doing more sawing videos as the logs come in. Sycamore and Elm rank up pretty high on the degree of difficulty.

Good morning, another great video. I have begun to keep a notebook of your “master class” so I have a quick reference at my mill. At the moment all my logs are frozen solid, so waiting for warmer weather. There will be some new parts going on as well. So far with the sawing I’ve done about 2,000’ i have not been able to find the right combination of blade speed to feed rate to minimize accumulation of sawdust. Some of the issue is the mill is essentially home built at this point. (Not by me). No tension gauge, no scale board, poor blade guide adjusting arm. Blade roller location varies more than 1/8” up or down. And May be under powered. Other than that it’s fine haha. All of witch I will be bringing up to your specs now I know what I’m looking for. Lots of room in my note book,looking forward to the next class.

Great video sir, I get all my bands from Joe at ICT, have been very happy with him. Thanks for your knowledge and experience at the mill. Have you run or had a reason to run the bi metal? Thanks again sir!
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama9 ай бұрын
Yes, I've run bi metal and they do pretty well, but what I have learned is that it's hard to beat a good resaw band that's less expensive, lasts longer, and most imortantly, manufactured correctly.
@thekiltedsawyer9 ай бұрын
Yes sir, Woodmizer sent me the attachment ( re saw ) looking forward to seeing it in action. I used them for a project for a customer that wanted a bunch (40 ) treads for a stair case out of glue lamb beams, the glue that they use has clay in it, cut like butter

Good morning sir, these babd videos you have done are a must watch, do you use the Woodmizer stress guage also? I've found it to be very helpful in running my bands correctly and for the right amount of time to not fatigue it first run. I've been trying to get Joe to get us connected, he's my band guy as well, will you still be using him when he goes to Woodmizer? PM me, would love to talk!🤞🧡🧡

That's some beautiful wood, I've had a few new blades break right on the weld, seems like it was the the cheaper ones, I've had great luck with the double hards, only complaint is the tooth spacing isn't always perfect at the weld when I sharpen them.

That is a manufacturing defect, it shouldn't happen.

How do you keep sawdust buildup if you run lubricant? I know you don’t run much pine so maybe that is the difference.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama9 ай бұрын
Not sure what your question is, but diesel is used by the professional pine band mills I know, one saw 2.5 million bdft per year, and only uses diesel as lube, nothing else. No sawdust is the goal no matter what band lube you use, it means you are cutting fast, clean and straight.

Great content professor. Do you bother to set and sharpen a blade which has very small stress cracks in the gullet, or do you throw them in the trash?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama9 ай бұрын
If I can see the cracks, then the band is DOA. Scrap steel is selling for 8.5 cents per pound, I just throw them in the pile with all the other scrap.
