Welcome to the Sawmill Project 2024, where many of the best sawmillers in the world meet and talk about techniques and have fun.
Make Money With a Sawmill! - Secrets of the Pros and showing Sawmills in Action! I'm Robert Milton, "The Sawmill Professor," a professional sawmiller and business owner who teaches sawmill tips and tricks to make your lumber as good as ours at Hobby Hardwood Alabama - ranked as producing the highest quality wood in Alabama, if not the country. / @hobbyhardwoodalabama . I am a retired aerospace engineer, my wife is a retired engineer at NASA, and we are a multimillion dollar, Dunn and Bradstreet listed, A+ rated BBB business. We used to build very high end houses and furniture using our lumber, but now sell it retail all over the country, and teach others to do the same.
We started with a chainsaw mill, upgraded to a portable manaul sawmill, then a production bandsaw mill. We are not a video company, but we are a real lumber company, and want to show others some of our money making and business sawmill techniques. This video is another example of sawmilling for our business, Hobby Hardwood, Alabama. We show how we mill logs, dry them and other things on our outdoor farm.

Wish you could have ben there! Chief kept getting jealous and I guess he decided to make a statement when he walked off with the arm. It was hilarious.

Yes, its amazing to see some of the people as they may be sawmill or lumber millionaires or own one of the largest mill in their state, or stuff like that. But deep down, they are just people who like to run a sawmill.

Not sure about the water, but maybe would have been a good joke to throw a blue Gatorade on the wood! That would have been fun. I may do that next year. Nathan doesn't drink alcohol,

It was great to see what has to be several centuries of knowledge gathered together it was also sad to not see much youth in the crowd. Is true sawing soon to become an almost lost art due to the commercial mills and spandex? Or do you think there is enough demand and new blood coming into sawing to keep it alive?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 2 ай бұрын
Good observation, and you are correct. Although there are lots of people buying sawmills and using them, there are very, very few people who actually understand wood and know what they are doing, not because they don’t want to, but simply because they can only learn from so called experts whose only knowledge of sawmilling is wearing spandex and selling video time doing stupid stuff that no self respecting saw miller would do. Its like who do you want to brink your house, the “star” on Discovery channel who learned how to lay brick on a 30 minute tv show or the guy whose been doing in 30 years and learned as an apprentice. That’s one of the reasons I started doing videos, to help record the techniques of real sawmillers which is completely different than most of what is seen on the Tube. True sawmilling is becoming a lost art, no different than all the crap chainsaws being sold and poser chainsaw operators on the tube with bar tip guards and instructions on how to never use the tip or top of the bar when in reality, the tip and top of the bar of a chainsaw is used more than the bottom by real pros, if for no more reason than using the top of the bar throws the chips away from the operator and kicks the bar down instead of up into the operators face. Anyways, the gathering was composed of real pros and skilled millers, and the odd things was with all these “real sawmillmers” I didn’t see a single piece of Spandex, butt pad pants, idiots leaning over cant hooks, wearing sneakers or putting the sawmill band on backwards.

@@HobbyHardwoodAlabama I much appreciate you and the others on the Forestry Forum sharing your knowledge. I have learned much from both locations and a very select few others on KZbin but know I have only scratched the surface.

I am a beginner chainsaw miller. I often hear you speak of avoiding the pith. It's no good juvenile wood. I have noticed that the pith (generally speaking of commercial store bought pine) is mostly centered in the middle of 4x4's/6x6's/ Etc. And I can understand why. My question is , I often hear people " Boast " of " Heart Pine " as being desirable maybe as for flooring. Does heart pine ( or any heart cut for that matter) refer to the pith ? Or does the so called " Desirable " heart reference refer to the wood between the sapwood & pith ?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 2 ай бұрын
Pith will always crack, it’s the nature of the structure of the wood. All crossties are low value center cut pith and if you walk down 1,000 miles of railroad track, you will not see a single pith cut crosstie not cracked wide open. The heart is not the pith, and very desirable and dense in heart pine.

So when are you supposed to start narrating for Nathan ?😂😂😂
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure. I will mention it to him, he will laugh at that! You might be interested to know that the reason I had to put in much of the narration was most of the clips had salty or smart aleck language in the background, that I think would have been hilarious in the video, but I later decided it would be a little "much" for public consumption. One of the guys called me last night, said he was "spitting coffee" on his keyboard in laughter hearing my "corrected narrations" which were covering up the audio of what he knew to be there!
