Well, I have to admit I've thrown a blade or two over the years. If I'd have done it this time I would have put it on the video because it's real life and stuff happens. On the other hand, since it is real life it shows how potentially bad things can be managed to be a non event. Just another day at the sawmill! Thanks for watching.

I was going to ask you how long you air dry before putting in the kiln. So after a year you do a low temp kiln run to get the moisture down in the single digits I am guessing then sterilize at 140F for so many hours to kill bugs?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama Жыл бұрын
I will air dry 8/4 for a year, 4/4 for at least a couple months to lock in the colors, relax the grain, etc. Then we kiln dry and then sterilize at 150F. The FDA requires 133F, but we go beyond that.

Great video, curious what your opinion is of a vacuum kiln? I'm trying to decide what type of kiln to go with.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 2 жыл бұрын
I don't much care for them, and the company that sells them. They sell them as "set and forget" but like any kiln, they are not, the quality off the wood produced is up to the kiln operator, not the kiln. Vacuum kilns as a cycle are very, very good, however, some of the current crop being marketed are not. I get quite a few customers who have had their wood dried in them who ask me to "fix their wood." The conversation usually goes "Hey, you own kilns don't you? I had mine dried in a vacuum kiln, can you fix it?" I talked to the company when they first came out and they actually told me that they didn't like dealing with customers like me because I "asked too many questions." Thanks for watching!

Two questions if you don’t mind . How do you identify curly maple and where do you get those stickers ? Thanks
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 2 жыл бұрын
Just Google Fluted Stickers and a couple sources will show up. Curly make is identified by the horizontal ridges in the cambium layer which I am pointing at 1:37 minutes into the video. It looks like a "washboard" in maple. It's pretty easy to spot if the log is missing bark. Thanks for watching!

Is there a reason why you dont end coat before sawing... doesn't it help with checking ?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama Жыл бұрын
Yes, I coat everything, either as a log or as boards with a sprayer, without exception. It just depends on how essential it is that 8 need to see the grain when sawing as the end-sealing obscures it.

Love anchorseal and believe it myself. However, I'm still doing it the hard way w/ a brush by hand. When you spray it do you cut it w/ water? If so about what ratio? I'm assuming it would be hard to over do it since it's a water based product. Any advice is appreciated thanks!
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 2 жыл бұрын
I cut it with water, but not an exact amount, I just kind of wing it until I get a good spray pattern and the backpack gets too heavy! You are correct, a lot of water has to be added to thin it too much, and if so, just add a little more sealant. When the boards are white, it's good. Thanks for watching!
