I didn’t like nor listen to much country growing up but sometimes it’s all about timing. I found country when the time was right for me. I’m 47 now and got into country in 1993 when I was 21. I was driving and was just in the frame of mind to get lost in a song and the right one came on (All These Years by Sawyer Brown) and it stayed in my ears, my mind, and in my heart for days afterward until I had to buy the CD. That’s how it started for me. I love how country songs paint vivid pictures and that each one is its own story. Why did All These Years make me change my mind about Country not being hokey crap? I guess I needed something deeper and more relatable at that moment in life. Sure, I still crank up AC/DC, Skid Row, and Aerosmith when it comes on but as I grow older it seems that 90s Country Music is usually what I want to hear most and I will always love this song because it made Country cool to me.

Sawyer Brown: All these years The song opens with the story with an apparently serially unfaithful wife ("She likes adventure with security; and more than one man can provide") having an affair, and her husband catching her in a tryst ("She planned adventure feeling sure that he; Would not be home ‘til after five.") Frustrated at the betrayal, he tells her he's been responsible and has been working hard to provide, despite their issues ("And I'm still here, until I'm gone.") He frustratingly realizes he can't trust her: "Don't you rub it in too hard that I've been wrong." The wife responds, "You're not the man you used to be" to which he clarifies "Neither is this guy." She acknowledges both of their roles in the couple's issues ("There's some things you refuse to see; But I guess sometimes so do I.") She states what she has done for the family, while he was working, she took care of their house and home and raised the family ("I made your supper and your daughter and your son,") and sees how much she stands to lose ("Still I'm here, and still confused; But I can finally see how much I stand to lose.") The repeat of the final refrain, "I'm still here and so confused; But I can finally see how much I stand to lose; All these years," attributed to neither the husband nor wife, indicates that both have seen what they have to lose, but are confused at the way forward.

Man Billy! So many people don't catch what this song is about. The first verse sets the scene. "She planned adventure, feeling sure that he wouldn't be home til after 5. He turned on the lights and turned them off again... " There was another man in bed with her. "She said your not the man you used to be. But, neither is this guy"

Love ya Billy, but I am guessing you didn't pick up on the fact that she was cheating on the hubby when he came home early. You got a little focused on them growing apart and maybe missed the second part of: "She said 'you're not the man you used to be.', and he said 'neither is this guy.' " Still loved the reaction, looking forward to more!

......she said the one think she could say......."What was that?" 🤣🤣🤣 I love the sounds and commentary during the song. Still laughing..... Btw, I could rewrite this song with the exact same scene and a 180 degree outcome. If someone doesn't want to be married, don't be fucking married. You bring another man into a mans home and shit pops off..... guaran-goddamn-teed!!! You can bank that. But the commentary is hilarious.

To be fair, Billy, trying to provide for your family doesn't give the other person the right to cheat. Yes they both messed up. Communication is key, but really, being disconnected from how someone may be feeling doesn't mean it's ok for the person wanting the attention to cheat. People aren't psychic. Sometimes speaking up works wonders. And as the first line said.. "she likes adventure with security. " Sounds to me like she liked to play things fast and loose and just never thought she'd get caught, so she never considered what she could lose. An alternate interpretation to "went to work and back home again" could be that his sole focus was on family and providing for them. Truth is, some people like the thrill of getting away with something and they don't always need a reason. They only hate it when they're caught.

I'm hallway through the song & I'm hoping you eventually get that she's in bed with another guy... "She liked adventure with security" (fun but with someone to pay the bills) "She planned adventure feeling sure that he would not be home till after 5/he turned on the lights & off again." He caught her b/c he came home before 5. How he talked calmly to her while she was still in the bed with some guy, I have no clue. My husband would probably be trying to kill the guy, lol. I would never do that though! Update- nope, you never got it. I was really hoping b/c I just heard the song the other day for the first time since I was a very, very little girl (I started memorizing & singing songs when I was 2 my mom said), & I was shocked. I was singing along & at the same time realizing, holy crap, what it meant! Yours was the only reaction I could find, so I was hoping you got it, lol! Still love ya though!

I think the point is that even though he's not the man he used to be he's still a good man. It's relevant even more today because everyone wants to be entertained and romanced constantly. Apparently hardworking and faithful are boring.. I personally prefer comfortable and familiar. Drama gets passed off as exciting and pampering as romance.
