Saxer Lucke Falensee

The Saxerlücke is a pass crossing at 1650 m above sea level in the Alpstein between the Swiss cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen.The Alpsteinmassiv is considered one of the most attractive mountain ranges of Switzerland and according to geologist Albert Heim "most beautiful mountains in the world”.The entire Alpstein is crisscrossed by a large number of transverse fractures. The Saxerlücke is part of the most prominent fault in the Alpstein, the Sax-Schwende fault. The Falensee (Falen Lake) is an incredible alpine lake situated close to Saxerlücke. It can be an adventure in itself or part of several hikes nearby. The Bollenwees Mountain Hut, which is right next to the Falensee, is a great overnight stay and base camp for sunset and sunrise missions in the surrounding lakes and peaks.

The hike takes approximately 3 hours to complete, including both the ascent and descent. We initiated the hike from the Staubern cable car station after utilizing the cable car for transportation.
