I was joke around with my friend who plays bari when he forgets his music and has to read tuba music. I always say things like "You gotta hit that low G when you play" and he just gives me a funny look

One day, i hope, i will get this massive sax ! The thing impressive here is that this sax can be played with a decent speed, which is usually impossible on an instrument of that size. I think the player of this saxophone worked hard too. Like i say, the contrabass sax is like a very dark 99% dark chocolate. You have to get used to the sound to appreciate it. I played baritone sax and the feelings are woooow, especially when my eyes are vibrating with the instrument on a low A (C in concert tonality). I don't imagine what the feelings would be on a contrabass !!! :)

I commented years ago now, but, after revisiting the more recent post on this instrument, yours (The jazz one as well) are the only useful demonstrations of what is possible with the contrabass. You and the gentleman on the Stainer model have done a true service, thanks. Percy Grainger would have over the moon to your fine examples.

@Morrisbassoon - You're absolutely right. These videos have encouraged me to play the contrabass sax one day and put it in a band. It might cost an arm and a leg, but I know it's possible.

I also have this solo on KZbin playing a baritone sax made in 1861 by Adolphe Sax himself. Search KZbin for Randy Emerick Original Adolphe Sax Saxophone. Thanks!

Aside from epic KZbin solos, what kind of performances do you use a contrabass saxophone in?

I have several big band arrangements written for me that feature the cobtrabass. Some were expensive, and somd were resonably priced by good arrangers who were fascinated by the big sax.

Those contrabass saxophones are so expensive. Do you have yours insured? If so, what was it like asking the insurance company for a contrabass saxophone plan?
@saxtek4 жыл бұрын
After playing for 50 years, I have learned to anticipate the dangers of damage and theft. I don't alliw my expensive instruments to be exposed to situations that are dangerous. That being said, anything is possible, so I have an extensive home security system, and I gave been a professional repairman for over 40 years, so I am relatively safe from theft and damage. I had a good insurance policy on my horns for 20 years, but the insurance company gradually eliminated the policy. Insurance companies exist to make money, not to protect the policyholder. Another factor working in my favor: It is difficult to steal a contrabass saxophone. Also, my 1861 baritone is in a flight case that is so big and heavy that it is also hard to move without becoming conspicuous.

@@saxtek Wow, this is very interesting. Thanks for the detailed answer. I'm nowhere near affording a contrabass saxophone, but I am interested in getting there someday, so it is nice to hear what someone who has been in the business for a long time does.
