About 10 years ago, I ordered 5 non-functional Dreamcast consoles for very little money and for the most part, it was either a bad PSU or bad laser lens, so I fixed them, cleaned them and gave most to my nephews and nieces ~ I still own my original Saturn and Dreamcast though!

I did fix all of them, but after a few months, one presented the same potentiometer problem you had with the 2nd Saturn, which I eventually fixed after researching it a little bit.

I just started my console modding/repairing journey this year and it has been a blast. I just modded a Dreamcast today to read games off of CompactFlash (keeping the disc drive). I also did a Saturn FRAM mod recently. Watching you troubleshoot has been really instructive. Great video!

I was a 12 year old boy when the Saturn came out in 95. Got it as a Christmas gift and it was the biggest console I got up until that point. As time passed, it sat in my parents basement. I recently dug it out and it didn’t work. I had to replace all the capacitors and it did the trick. Nice to see these consoles have life again.

Nice repairs. I'm surprised the capacitor installed wrong way hadn't exploded in similar way as the varistor, but I guess the bottom of it gave in and let the juice out corroding the board.

It could be, but as someone else suggested, maybe they replaced a capacitor that had previously exploded incorrectly

This brings me joy. I normally deal with front end software issues. So, learning more about fixing and the planning steps to think what could be the issue is neat. I hope the same can be done for current technology. I feel more is built to fail and not built to be adjusted, but I hope I am wrong.

Well done! I still have my personal unit of Sega Saturn, since its release back in 1995 😊. It is almost untouched and kept well preserved in his original packaging.
