I think I enjoy watching people cull their shelves because it shows me how their reading tastes have changed over the years - I don't think they have to be done in a negative way but can be a way to get to know yourself as a reader again.

Recently, you showed us two new releases, “Christ on a Bike” by Irish author Orla Owen, and “Whale Fall” by Elizabeth O’Connor. Both stories are set in Wales, and I enjoyed them very much. I probably wouldn’t have taken notice of these two books at all if not for your channel. Thank you!😀

If it's a long cull, unhaul video perhaps break it down into a number of Parts- Part 1 Authors A to L, Part 2 - Authors M to Z or along the lines of how your books are arranged. Hope the library refresh is a great experience for you. Cherio!

I love redecorating and heartily support your decision to re-invent your library vidudio (video studio mashup). I don't love 'culling' videos but I do enjoy when creators describe their reorganization decision (alpha by author, subject, publisher, genre, a stack here, a double layer there, by spine color, etc.) I strongly recommend you watch plant-based brides vidudio remodel. I think she posted two vids (one for the office end; the other for the library end.) For video ideas: Id like to see before and afters and in process. When you are steaming the wall paper off the plaster and cursing for example. Keep a list on a post-it where you can jot down scenes in books that your renovation brings to mind. And then record in the worksite your memories of those scenes and what you were doing when it popped into your head. I'd love to know what books you wish you hadn't packed away and which ones you you kept out but lost interest in reading. I also love Emma's tours of Little Library Boxes (may be unique to North America, not sure) where she attempts to deacquistion her books periodically. Honestly, Simon, just be you. Enjoy the process. Its messy, chaotic, expensive, and uncivilized but in the end, very rewarding. Carpe diem!

The thing with culling, its not a problem for 80% of the books. But those that viewers, friends or your lovely mother gave you, ouch. I don't like seeing that. Also once, one of my creators culled an important classic before reading it and that stung, too. But you are entitled to not be interested in a book. No problem with that. Just don't make a bone-headed decision to save a centimeter on the shelf.

How interesting. If I gave someone a book and they decided they didn’t want to read it then I wouldn’t mind. I would rather that than they slog through a book because they felt they had to. Life’s too short.

Thank you for the video ideas. Will definitely do some before and during and after though think all of that will be a vlog for once it’s done. I won’t be doing the steaming but I will film someone else swearing if they allow. Ha. As all the books in the library are ones I’ve not read maybe it’ll be more of a quick description of if I have any specific memories of where I bought them.

I think reading some of the oldest books on your shelves is a great idea. You could also read one unread book from each shelf. I never watch culling videos. Not sure why but I really don't like them! Good luck with the revamp, how fun. Im always moving things around.

I think I got it from Homebase… or B&Q. Ha. It was a discount end of line and was JUST what I wanted at the time. I like a floral pattern especially roses, the bedding in the spare rooms has that sorted. As you may all see if I film in there. Hahaha. BTW. Your decor is lush, I love the colours your home gives.

Happy booktube anniversaire 😊 Looking forward to your upcoming short-list video with your mom, and I was happy to hear you mention you might revisit your prompt readings while you film together. I'm curious to know what those prompts inspired you to read respectively, and I enjoy your interactions when you film together. I'm pretty sure the book prompts video is the first video I saw of you both together, so having a follow-up on it will have a cozy feel to it. As far as suggestions, maybe you can make a pile of books as you're emptying your shelf of books that stand out as being pivotal in your reading journey for whatever reasons - first book you read of an author that became your favorite, book that you couldn't stop thinking about after finishing, book that changed your view on something, book that you never saw coming and that had a deep effect on you, book that you were excited to read and let you down tremendously... The categories don't have to be predetermined, it could come to you as you're putting books away. (On a side note, I had to look up what "culling" means - as a French speaker, that word was not part of my vernacular yet. I guess you can therefore safely assume that I have not watched a whole lot of culling videos before if I had not learned the term!)

@@SavidgeReads 😲 Oh wow, I see... I'm not going to judge, I have more crafting supplies than years left on this earth to use it all. My English knowledge has definitely expanded over the years, but I'm always reminded here and there that there's always more to learn. I hear a lot of Canadian and American English on a regular basis, but it's nice to hear British English in your mom's and your videos. I have to admit that I'm sometimes struggling when you are quickly adding little asides to what you are saying - I do love them, I think it adds personality to your videos, but because they are quicker and mumbled, you are giving me a run for my money! 😂

Very excited to see your new library later in the year. I like unhaul videos and don't see them as negative, just as a sign of passing on books to people who would enjoy them more. It's also a way of highlighting some books that haven't been seen for a while.

I think if they are done well, and I have seen a few, they are fine and they do show how as readers our tastes etc change. I think as I work in the industry, it makes it a little trickier, you dont want to unintentionally offend someone whose book you haven't read. I dunno I find explaining why I didn't like a book can be more nuanced than unhauling one without reading, for me on here I mean.

The videos 'unhauling' or 'culling' books that work for me are the ones where the reader speaks about what they enjoyed in the books (and are getting rid of them due to space limitations / not going to be re-reading them) and they reflect on their reading journey, or if they didnt like the book they talk about who they would recommend the book to / what themes in the book could work for someone else.

@@SavidgeReads I agree that it would be a different vibe to share titles of books that are leaving the library that you've not read and as a viewer it wouldn't be satisfying content for me as I like to hear impressions and thoughts rather than just a title. As a compromise I would still be interested in an overview chat of what you noticed when culling books without sharing titles i.e. did you notice a particular genre you unhauled more of and why do you think that is or did you unhaul a greater number of books that you received unsolicited versus books you chose for yourself? A general chat on any themes if any that you noticed about your collection would still be interesting and hearing how you feel about your remaining books - did you find titles you forgot about or feel more excited about now or are there books you're saving for a time or mood?

Culling always seems a negative thing to me so I’m in Camp Simon for that one! I love the quirky (in the nicest possible way) decorating style that you have and I’ll watch the progress avidly. I’d love to see perhaps summer/gardens themed content from your garden, especially with cat cameos. Or kitchen or culinary themes from your fabulous kitchen. But honestly, pretty much anything you do is mandatory viewing in my home!

I don't mind the term quirky, when we had the house valued recently (we aren't moving, we thought about it for a while though) the agents all said it being bolder with colours would make it more appealing, I was surprised. They usually say make everything white and beige so people can imagine their own spin. Though the last house I sold was partly sold on how much she loved the decor.

Be interested to see what's going to happen to the old furniture etc - even if it's just you're moving the rug into a different room etc. Or if you're going to bring in stuff you already own. I have just bought my first flat and I have tried to repurpose stuff (which is why my shoe rack is actually a laundry basket) So, I am always keen to see how others rethink or reuse etc.

Excited to see new backdrops, for sure...and going cold 🦃 and packing up the shelves is a fabulous opportunity to rejig the collection , to weed out 👨🏻‍🌾 and plan additions 😈 Try out different fantasy reader selves, if you will 🤔 Not a big fan of the📚🪓🗑️, too often done for sensation factor, (hon mention to Alice @The Book Castle who does an annual one, fabulous!) I notice some BTers are very attached to their backdrops, do you feel you will be uncomfortable without yours? Are you dreaming of a very different layout or just a small glow up? Will you be adding new nick-nacks? To me that’s more wrap ups because I have actually read those, culls are just culls. That said I wouldn’t ever want to make someone not read a book as we all have different tastes.

Hahaha. I think I said no colour suggestions… how cheeky of you Cherylyn 😉 I have always considered trying colour coding the shelves. I worry I wouldn’t find anything. I do think it can be aesthetically pleasing.
