After a lifetime of living in San Francisco, it’s finally time to say goodbye. Here are my thoughts about leaving the city where I was born and raised.
(And to those who want to use this opportunity to crap on the city, allow me to direct you to the nearest toilet instead)

I lived in San Francisco when Jerry Garcia was alive and I saw the grateful dead play 70 times. The fun loving San Francisco is gone and has been replaced by a Diane Feinstein democratic party that has totally ruined San Francisco. I feel bad for the younger generation that doesn’t get to see San Francisco in its glory.

I'm glad you're not going too far! San Francisco needs to hang onto the perspective of natives like you whose heart is truly there. I'm not native, but feel like one, since I've loved SF since the first time I visited when I was seven years old. I lived in the Sunset for several years in the 70s and 80s and loved your videos, because I could tell exactly where they were taken, like oh, sure that's way out on Irving in the Avenues! High fog as usual, looks like a typical Saturday afternoon in the Sunset District. Your mention of your family connection to Isleton was also interesting. I've long been fascinated by the Delta towns such as Isleton and Locke along the beautiful river. I admire your reverence for your family's history in this area, and your appreciation of what a unique place this is. It's changed in recent years, and aside from the impossibly unaffordable housing, SF isn't a great place to raise a family at this time. I hope that changes. Wishing you and your new family the best in your new home. Please keep posting! 🌉

I think every remaining SF native can relate and the situation is tearing at their heart daily. I thought you'd be moving much further away, but it's a big change coming from SF to anywhere else. I've spent my whole life here as well, and your channel helped me learn a lot about home that I never knew. Good luck to you!

I was going to say the exact same thing. Only Natives & long-time locals truly know how much it hurts to see these changes happening- and the prospect of leaving is SCARY. Coz you know once you leave, you may never be able to come back, unless you got a lot of money to throw around. My husband and I entertained the idea of buying a home in Oakland or Richmond about five years ago, and it honestly was not that much cheaper there! And we kept getting outbid, it was super disheartening. We decided to stay here in our current place of 20 years as renters in the Inner Richmond , and I can't say I regret it. But I totally understand the desire to move, especially if you're young person and have a lifetime of building a family in front of you. San Pablo is not that far away, and I actually do know this place! Because Alex's Burgers, formally Nib's, was there for a few years. You should totally check out Nib's, it's now in Oakland ❤️

I think it's a right to live where you were born. I was born in SF Outer Richmond District and it's sad to say that I can't afford to live there and haven't lived there since joining the military in 2000. That's a long time and now that I'm a civilian, it's sad that I can't afford to return and enter the city every weekend as a visitor.

I agree, but I believe I'm in the minority. I was born in the Presidio (my dad was career Army). I loved the city and it was such a wonderful place back then. After I graduated high school I joined the Army in order to earn money for college. After 8 years I was eager to return to SF. I did, but was surprised at how expensive it got. After 5 1/2 years, I moved out of the city. Although I do miss living there, it's been so long that I have and I am no longer a young man. The city has become a place for the young and the rich, which I am neither.

As a fellow native San Franciscan, I hear you man. I’ve managed to stay here but it’s a question I ask myself every day as the future looks more and more ridiculous from a financial standpoint to stay. I don’t think I’m the only one to think this but I came initially for the SF content and stayed because you are a good artist with a distinct voice and I will support you in whatever videos you choose to create next. Cheers

The timing of this is eerie as I’m preparing to leave myself. I discovered your channel right after my husband and I decided to leave and started looking at where we might go. As a resident of the Richmond, your video’s made me cry with homesickness for a place I hadn’t even left yet. Over a year later, we have our first baby and are under contract on a house much farther away, in Raleigh, NC, that we’ll be moving to in December. Thank you for making these videos. It’s comforting to know I can get swept back up in SF any time I’m feeling extra homesick, just by visiting your channel. Congrats on your new home and can’t wait to see what videos you have in store!

It's truly apparent that you are an expert and are very passionate about SF, so I hope that we do get some east bay videos as well- looking forward to binging the rest of your content. I found your videos because of my interest of the historic parts of San Francisco like the Lands End, Sutro baths area. Love your videos!!! As a born and raised East Bay Californian, I’ve always been interested in the nooks and crannies of San Francisco. The creativity and the research that goes into your videos is awesome!!! As a married 30 something, I can share your struggle in the wanting to stay in the Bay Area and wanting to afford a home. I’ve had several cousins live in the city, but now have left because of that same reason….it’s expensive. I’ll still watch your vids even if you don’t live in San Francisco! Lol! You share the same struggle as all of us raised in Northern California….and in California in general. Hopefully this will change someday. Crossing my fingers.

Recently started watching your videos and am planning to move to SF this year (Sunset district). Never thought I would be able to afford it, but the prices here in Sonoma County are rising as the ones there are dropping due to covid so might as well try it while I can! I was born in Vallejo; my mom from San Pablo/Richmond. Coming from SF I doubt you would find it rough there, you just gotta have common sense in certain areas. People that come from this wine valley bubble sometimes see it as a culture shock haha. There is a lot of culture and history to San Pablo though - Check out the Eagles Hall! If you're into hiking Wildcat has some great trails and views; bunch of geocaches hidden there too! There's Rockefeller Lodge and several other earthquake hotspots... East Bay cities get a lot of bad rep but it holds a lot of the culture that has been gentrified in other parts of the Bay Area. It may not be as fancy (you legit will have bars and bullet proof glass on windows and gas stations in some areas), but you also have more of a melting pot than you get in a lot of the state. At least that's my experience... I'm sure you will have some fun adventures!

I've noticed that, in the comments, several people are non-plussed by the notion of Joey having to make such a big deal of moving a BART ride away from San Francisco proper. In many American cities (and foreign ones as well) his move would be akin to changing neighborhoods. No big deal, right? Well, speaking as a native San Franciscan, it lS somewhat of a big deal. I think it may have something to do with the bridges and the fact that SF is surrounded by water on three sides. I can attest to a very strange and sometimes uncomfortable sensation that San Franciscans experience when they leave The City proper for the North, South or East Bay. It's not as strong on the Peninsula, but the East Bay can feel like another part of the country. Crossing that bridge can be quite anxiety provoking. I know this sounds absurd, but I'm sure other long-time residents of San Francisco can back me up. Wishing you the very best in San Pablo, Joey.

You look just like your grandfather. I grew up in East Bay, went to junior college in San Pablo Contra Costa College, SFSU, and worked in SF. Once you get used to it, using BART, it's not that far and from San Pablo Ave in the city of San Pablo coming from Hilltop Dr. you can see SF on a clear day. It's honestly not that bad less crowded. Public Transportation is so connected, gets to SF and the Airports in no time, you'll probably be more grateful for the move in the long run. With that being said, there is a feeling of unfairness to what has happened with people getting priced out of their childhood neighborhoods if they want to stay.

Joey, you will be fine you only live in the East Bay all you have to do is pay the 6 to 8 dollar toll and drive across the Bay Bridge to see family! I was born and raised in San Francisco too! I lived all over the city from Sunnydale, Mission District, Bayview to the Avenues. I even remember going to the drive-in to see the last Bruce Lee movie enter the Dragon to the 89' Earthquake the battle of the Bay between the A's and Giants to the Marina burning down. I went o Sanchez elementary, Everest Middle School, Horace Mann, Phillip Burton Academic High School to McAteer School of the Arts. Then graduated from City College and San Francisco State University. We all need a change, in the beginning, it's hard but over time it's what we really need. Don't let the change get to you at least you still live in California I moved 3,000 miles away to Florida. I remember crying on my drive from one side of the country to the other. Now, I have a home that would probably be a million dollars in the Bay Area and no longer living in my car thinking about what's my next move.

Joey, I agree. It's tough to leave a place you've called home your entire for a new horizon, but at the same time, it will also be a time of excitement for you as well. I know this for fact, because I did it. Well, sort of, anyway. A little over two years I ago, I left my lifetime home of 17+ years, located in Windward Oahu, for college at Notre Dame. And I did this with relatively little experience with travel to other cities; the only places I had ever visited before in my entire life, before I began college, was San Francisco and my ancient ancestral homeland in Japan. I only added Chicago to my short list during a trial visit to Northwestern during my tour of potential schools to attend, while in my last years in high school. So that said, I was quite a rookie at experiencing new places and cities. While going away to school isn't exactly comparable as the long-term situation you're about to embark on---I do get to come home for our extended Christmas breaks, as well as summers (and in less than 2 years I will be finished with school)--it was, at first for me, a period of significant adjustments. Going from a life of living at the family homestead in Hawaii to South Bend was a big change for me. Especially during that annual 3 month period called "winter" that seems to last longer than it's supposed to. All told, the change of my scenery was initially scary, fun, educating, lonesome (at times)--totally eye-opening for me. I'm glad I decided to attend college 4200 miles from home. I've learned and experienced so much from being away from what is familiar to me. The change did me good. I'd like to say one thing to you about your move to San Pablo: Embrace the change. You'll be experiencing new things, in a new place, while at the same time, you're still just a short drive away from your beloved Richmond---assuming the traffic on the Bay Bridge isn't too bad! And when your time is up in San Pablo, and you've returned to The City for good, you'll only appreciate being back home that much more, after being away. Good luck, Joey, with your move to San Pablo. Just remember that San Francisco will be always be there for you, eagerly awaiting your return!

You have done an outstanding job playing tribute to and mythologizing a city that, aside from location, seems to have lost the charm and spirit that made it special. On our last visit, I was surprised by how many angry and aggressive people we observed or encountered. It is sad to see vibrant cities loose creative thinkers like yourself. But SFs loss is San Pablo's gain. I hope you are able to enjoy your new community and contribute as much as you did to SF.

I moved out in July and I clicked on this because I'm kind of homesick for The Sunset, I chose Mountain View for the short commute. I've worked in Palo Alto for the last 10 years, and was in "critical Manufacturing" so I worked the whole pandemic, obviously if I managed to buy a condo in Mountain View I could have afforded the City as well, but when it came time to pull the trigger on owning property, the Pandemic made me acutely aware of my commute . I picked Mountain View because it has an interesting character that I think is neat but I'm wearing a Balboa sweatshirt with that same logo as I write this and binge reading the "Tales From the City" books. Not sure if I am handling it well.

I did a long commute down to Silicon Valley a few years ago and I can really relate to people who say it’s not worth staying if they have to spend 2+ hours a day inside a vehicle. The commuting stress may fade, but the homesickness definitely does not.

I lived in SF for years in a mainly Asian neighborhood and now I live in a South East Asian Country and Im an Anglo... Go figure... Life is so much better, safer, affordable, in SE Asia than anywhere in the USA right now. I am a Brit by birth. Ive been in San Pablo, nice place to bring up a family, safe, as well as all the other small peaceful towns in the East Bay, Antioch is one, Benicia is another, (That was the former Capital of CA State decades ago), and going further up the Sacto River are others.

How you feeling now? I'd really be afraid it's not a good idea. I left SF to go back to be near family in Michigan to give it a shot, and just NO. I love Cali too much. I love the coast. I love the weather. I need the sunshine. I need to be able to ride my eboard without getting harassed by police.

As a San Franciscan Born and raise, my family did the same in the late 90s and moved to San Pablo for 20 plus years. Maybe an idea for future video geo map of San Pablo and Richmond. Enjoy your content videos and representing San Francisco.

"Do I deserve to live here? Is it my right to live here?" This doesn't quite make sense to me. I feel like you "deserve" or have the right to live wherever you want except from like North Korea maybe. Congratulations, on the move. That's pretty big for someone who has lived in the same place for 30+ years. I feel like it would be cool to see videos about San Pablo though.

When I bought my home in SF, I never thought about having kids. Why is that important? Unless you're rich and private school tuition is no big deal, getting into one of the better SF public schools is difficult (admittedly getting into some of the SF private schools is difficult too)... If I was moving to the East Bay, I would probably move to the San Ramon Valley area (Alamo, Danville, San Ramon). Expensive, yes...but at least you have to worry less about your kids ending with a lousy school (and crime, and other quality of life issues). You'll likely end up moving away from San Pablo if you have school-age kids. :P

Joey! I'm excited for your move and for your future endeavors. I hope to see that you keep making videos regardless of where you are. I moved from SF almost a decade ago for the same reason - it was impossible then to buy a decent home in the city for my family unless I was way rich. Even at low 6 figure income, 3800 for rent was overwhelming but buying a home for 2 million felt impossible. The prices have only gone up since then. Best wishes to you and I'm looking forward to seeing some new videos of your new city, too.
