I just bought an audio-technica tonearm lifter just a month ago from Amazon. It’s fidgety to set up, but seems to work well most of the time, if you are careful to return the lifter back to the right spot (it rotates freely). Also, if I forget to reset the arm, the tonearm will hit it at some point and either bounce backwards or keep playing a single groove over and over.

I've been very pleased with my Tru-Lift device. Due to the widely varying widths of the runout grooves on different records it required several placement adjustments to avoid being actuated prematurely on a record with a very small runout groove. Once proper placement was achieved it has worked flawlessly and saved my stylus much wear as falling asleep while playing a record has happened on occasion. The one major drawback is that the optimal placement of the device for 12" records does not allow for playing 7" records without activating the lifter prior to the end of the record. Movement or removal of the device would be needed to avoid this but since perfect placement of the Tru-Lift requires tweaking, it has not been worth the effort to do that in order to play 7" records.

Tru-Lift works quite well, too. Well built, rugged for this product category. This looks comparable. Not sure which came first. The AT's were quite fragile. Unfortunately I'm now using an arm that does not lift at all - only moves in the horizontal plane. There is a sub arm at the end of the main one that moves in the vertical plane. Love the sound but makes these devices unusable. I'll miss it...

I bought a Thorens turntable in the late 80's and for $12 I added a Q-up tone arm lifter. That worked without fault for about 25 years when wear was causing the lifter not to lock in the down position. i never had a problem with the tone arm bouncing around when it lifts the arm. i replaced my Q-up a few years ago for $35 which I thought was a bit high but a good deal less than the Little Fwend device. I use a Q-Up because the space between the tone arm base and the platter is too narrow. It was the only one that would fit on a Music Hall 2.2LE, plus it's made in Canada. I tried the Little Fwend, but the magnet interfered with something in my tone arm. The arm would stop following the grooves and bounce back a bit, almost as if it were at the end of the runout, though it was still in the grooves. Perhaps it was the magnetic antiskate. Whatever the issue was, I could not find a position in which it did not occur. My table has very little excess room to work with. Another example of out of control greed IMO. The Q-Up is $50, but as another example of how ridiculous things have become, the Q-Up was around $30 only a few months ago! Both these products do the same thing in the same way. For $300+ and even now $50, I will get up out of my chair and take care of it. That is how I used to do it growing up back in the day as automatic turntables were expensive. I also figure it this way: One still has to get up and turn the record over anyway, even with an automatic table or Fwend or Q-Up. If one doesn't like having to put the record on a turntable and flip it over and such, then listen to streams instead. The reason some folks listen to vinyl is because we want to.

@@DG-ie5ip Yeah, having service several automatic turntables as a hobbyist, ranging in condition from junk unless fixed to just needs minor maintenance, its very obvious its cost more than anything and all this talk of mechanical noise is either exaggeration or people judging all automatics by the standards of cheap idler drive automatics. The reason you see it more on cheaper turntables is also a simple cost issue although a more counter intuitive one. The production and assembly of the more complicated parts needed for the mechanism becomes cheaper the more units you produce per batch which keeps the end price within the range of its target market. For very small batch, boutique builders this cost cannot be easily offset so the end price becomes much much higher and prices itself into a market that is also hostile to its feature set due to the perception among ultra high end buyers that automatic is bad. Additionally it can probably be assumed that established companies, such at Technics and Audio-Technica, have their costs even further reduced by the fact they have been making them so long that the original upfront costs of establishing the manufacturing pipeline have long been made up for since, based on what I've seen, the automatic turntable mechanism hasn't really changed much since the 50s besides materials used. The built in lifters are totally disconnected during play even on old idlers anyway and the noise they experience is down to other issues with that mechanism type. These devices are literally just a built in automatic lifter thats been moved to a different spot without actually changing how it functions.

Am I glad that my turntable collection is all vintage. And back in the day, most turntables at least had an auto shut off. Also, the lead out grove is not well defined. There is no norm as far as I know. That is why to have an auto shut off work really well, you need to measure the speed change of the arm rotation in the last 5% of the record. This thing can only measure a position, so I am almost sure it can not capture every LP out there. Personally I think the best advice should be: "If you still have to buy a turntable, an auto shut off should be a requirement." And additionally it is good to know that this feature is worth $200,- that means if you have a turntable that has this feature, you can subtract $200,- when comparing it with a fully manual turntable.

@AndyP126

@@thevinylattack Most audiophiles will not even consider an automatic table. This isn't because they tried one, and found it inferior. It's because they were told by someone that semi and fully auto turntables negatively affect the sound. I would love to see a comparison video of a Technics SL-1200MK2 and a Technics SL1600MK2. Or a Technics SL-D1, SL-D2 and SL-D3.. Or the Q1, Q2 and Q3. Semi and fully auto might affect sound quality. There are arguments on both sides. One thing I have never seen is an objective measurement, or subjective blind listening tests. I always hope that will happen one day. But I doubt it, since almost nobody makes a semi or fully automatic turntable any more. I find audophiles, in general, don't like things to be easy. They need some struggle in order to listen to their music. Anything that makes you life easier seems to be dismissed as deteriorating the sound. It's almost like getting good sound needs to be a struggle. I never understood this.

@@thevinylattack I fail to see why a primitive mechanical device that visually intrusive and has to be amateuristically glued on the turntable next to the arm lift can be more audiophile than an electronic shut off. Mirco Seiki had it nailed already in the 80's (one would think they have enough cred) Heck, even Philips used a light beam to shut of the electronically regulated motor on the 212 manual turntable in the 70's. It shows the profound lack of both knowledge and engineering most audiophiles have. Besides, though I was/am speaking of auto shut off and not automatic turntable as requirement, I know from restoring Automatic HiFi turntables that they completely disengage the arm once the stylus is positioned and thus, the record can only "see" the same that is on a manual turntable.

@@thevinylattack The base on the SL 1200 is different than the Audio Technica (AT-LP120XUSB) The base on the Technics is smaller and flush to the plenum. So the "Little Fwend" probably would work. I went to their web site and the Audio Technica wasn't listed. If you google the Audio Technica model and the SL 1200 in images. You'll see what I'm talking about. Thanks for responding.

So what happens if you forget to push down the Little Fwend (ding) and play a record. Will your tone arm slam into it? Also, $225 seems really high. I can buy a vintage semi-auto turntable for that money to solve this problem.
@thevinylattack
@thevinylattack 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're arm would hit the lift which isn't great. You might get a vintage turntable for that, but it wouldn't sound nearly as good as what most people use with this tool.
@AndyP126
@AndyP126 2 жыл бұрын
@@thevinylattack I wonder about that. Vintage quartz lock semi of fully automatic turntables sound pretty darn amazing. Stick a high-end cartrdige on it and it migiht be good enough for you. Marantz had a semi-auto turntable that had an almost 2" solid wood plinth. It would be nice if turntable makers could somehow incorporate this into a turntable and have it auto-descend when you engage the tone arm. Most modern turntables at almost all price points are fully manual. But in the days of vintage, there were plenty of turntables that were available as a manual, semi, and fully automatic. The SL1200 MK2 has a fully automatic equivalent in the SL 1600 MK2. Same motor, same tone arm. Slightly different plinth. if I had a fully manual table, I would like the idea of this a lot. But the concern that I would forget to set it when I put a record on would prevent me from using it. I like what Fluance did, where the motor stops spinning when the tone arm enters the run out groove. I wonder why more turntable designs don't incorporate that features. That feels like the bare minimum any turntable should have.

@@AndyP126 The old auto's were indeed pretty great, but on a sensitive system, it is possible to hear the mechanisms working. At least on the ones I've had experience with, which is obviously few by way of comparison to the many that have been made. I'd say there is certainly a risk of not resetting the arm, but so far it's only happened to me once and I caught it in time. As I've used it more and more, it becomes habit just like raising and lowering a tonearm.

I can't speak to this question specifically regarding the Little Fwend but I have a Tru-lift and I've been very pleased with it. On occasion I've forgotten to reset the device. When that happens the tonearm contacts the device at some point and the stylus will remain in that groove, skipping until it's lifted or the device is reset. I've not allowed this to occur for more than a few rotations and there has never been any damage incurred to a record as a result.

Yeeeaaa.... I remember when as the comment below says, you could get a semi auto lift built into the table all day long I have a $150 JVC from the late 80's that lifts and returns the arm and shuts off the platter by itself. I dont buy built in auto return affecting an audiphile tables performance, the manufacturers just dont want to spend the money to build it in it cuts into their profit margin - if people keep accepting expensive tables with no auto return thats what they will keep building so we need to be vocal about it so manufacturers will listen. Theyre charging stupid money ($225.00-!!) for this thing that you have to mount and set up yourself when a simple built in auto arm lift or auto return would do the same thing for maybe another $20 in the tables cost if that. I have a $125 table from best buy that has auto stop and it has no effect on the tables performance or noise during play, so I dont buy all the excuses for not including auto lift or auto lift and return. Speak up people dont be forced to accept these expensive tables without essential features-!!

Some weights might come out far enough that a table with a wide head shell could interfere with the lift. It's not a definite, just something to consider.
