This guy is a genius, nobody has ever explained how I could use Ableton Live with my hardware instruments with such ease and actual sense. The way Saytek explained the process of dragging and dropping different parts of loop to start every 4/8 bars, percussive/kick, duplicate Scene and add bass line, then explaining next scene removes the bass line, add chords next with HPF, delay on the channel, go into clip and change dry/wet and filter of sample, synchronize the kick with toms/ride, transitioning with a 16 bar loop will continue into next scene, arrange live using keyboard/launchpad and then using effects from Kaos Pad, Arp, Keystep, and other USB/MIDI devices!!!

Nice setup, seemed confusing at first but it is actually a really cool "workflow" you have going on there, lots of room to do stuff on the fly in various ways. I also completely agree about taking a few years to get to know a piece of gear until it becomes just an extension of yourself. Cool stuff!

Be fantastic if Saytek did a full video breakdown of how the live set works. From what I can gather it seems like he's triggering the main loops in Ableton and then mixing in different drum loops/vocals/stabs etc. But then I've seen other videos where he says he makes it all up on the fly. Still not sure how this setup works.

+Joseph Keevill This is one of the best setup and performance masterclasses i have seen in a long time. Thank you Saytek for showing us your setup. It is kinda close to my own 'work in progress' and I have been looking for some advice on some of on it and perhaps you can clear up some points for me. I have a Xone 92 as the master mixer, macshine mk1 for drum fills, rmx 1000 for effects and the volca series for additional synth and an MPC 26 for Live control.. Firstly, what is the brand of the sub mixer you have? Need one of them badly so that i can free up 3 channels on the Xone. I take it that you have all the Volca's plugged into that, then the sub mixer to the Pioneer mixer. Sound right? If not, please tell me how you have it arranged. Another problem i have is that when you daisy chain the Volcas together, sound will not follow the daisy chain to the mixer. Only one of the Volcas will go into the Xone and the others come through the built in speaker. How do you chain them to get the sound you want? A major problem that i have is with MIDI syncing all the gear together. You have that amazing master tempo correction dial that looks really handy. What is that called and how do you tie all the gear to it? The Volca's are the biggest problem, with sound and with syncing and would really value your input cause Korg haven't been any help after several attempts at contacting them for support. Cheers!!
@Saytek_live9 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for your words sub mixers a pretty cheap one made by gear for music . Also you cannot daisy chain the audio of volcas you need to send them to separate channels on a mixer

Does Ableton slave well to the MidiClock?
@EliahHoliday8 жыл бұрын

@MrColourOfficial8 жыл бұрын
how does the midiclock send to all the gear? just wondering how you set that up as it has only 1/2 outputs by the looks of it
@synthieboys84068 жыл бұрын
Nice setup, and nice playing, but watch out for Ableton Channels to go into the reds or hitting the top (around 9:00 and 16:00), it basically means you are out of headroom, which isn't as much of a problem in analog gear as it causes distortions, which can add harmonics, but in digital running out of headroom and clipping stuff means just adding noise, as there is nothing above 0dB. Other than that very very nice! Big up!
@josephkeevill9568 жыл бұрын
I saturate the channels on Ableton they will not clip only the master clips hence channels turned up to max and master turned down. Saturating the channels in ableton works surprisingly well you get almost analog/tape saturation effect i use it on my live sets all the time. Apparently its something to do with floating points.
@Saytek_live8 жыл бұрын
to quote the manual : Because of the enormous headroom of Live’s 32-bit floating point audio engine, Live’s meters can be driven far “into the red“ without causing the signals to clip. The only time that signals over 0 dB will be problematic is when routing to or from physical inputs and outputs, like those of your sound card, or when saving audio to a file.
@JohnDoe-jz7bj8 жыл бұрын
Are you serious about this "saturation thing"? :) Lol. First, what you're talking about - it doesn't happen. If there's anything saturation-like that happens in the digital domain, than it's purely digital clipping. Second, "floating points" are there exactly to prevent such thing from happening by introducing enourmosly large headroom. What you're talking about probably happens because of effects you have on the master track, which could be input volume dependant, so "maxing out the gain" before signal reaches the Master track could actually bring about some saturation. Is that the case? I'm not going down on you, I'm just saying that what you're talking about happens because of reasons other that individual tracks gains. Expectation bias could easily be one of them. Everybody is prone to it, no matter how advanced one gets. It happens to me very often in all kind of forms. Also, you're probably misinterpreting the manual. "Driving signals into the red" on individual tracks is purely for ones visual reference, in lack of a better way to put it. There is nothing being actually over-driver, that is, saturated.
@Saytek_live8 жыл бұрын
Yes i am serious try it for yourself

I've just realized you're Saytek :) Wow you're a great musician, I really appreciate what you're doing. I'm also into a similar kind of performing, though not professionaly, but for my own and my friends' satisfaction and I really learned a lot about the craft from this video. What bugged me the most is how easy one gets messed up when using MIDI and VSTs in a live performance project. It gets enormously complicated. It all gets out of hand IMO. Seeing you actually using only flattened audio clips etc. is great because now I know it's a wise choice for live performance :) Wish you all the best in your musical future!

You mention reliability quite a bit. Do you feel solid with Ableton as far as crashing goes. I really like your music. Is it because you bring all of the midi down to audio that it is more solid? I am thinking to do a live presentation of similar music. What do you think of the Akai MPC live? I am thinking that using it would be more reliable. What do you use to add effects live?
