I think the ex was being helpful... if in a blunt way. She was trying to keep the bride within a budget, so that he wouldn't be upset about the money, and told her what did actually look good on her. She would've bought that 1st dress, which was ok, instead of the last dress that was beautiful on her. If she was really trying to sabotage her, she'd have let her buy that 1st dress knowing it'd anger the fiance, and that it didn't look that great.
