Me either. I completely saved up and paid for my dress. I don't have a high paying job either, but I shoveled what I could away. I got a beautiful dress for just over 1000 and still had money left over for alterations. I couldn't imagine taking out a loan for just a dress. Take out a loan for something worth while, like a car or a home.

Absolutely agree. I've seen brides take out huge loans to pay for a 'fairytale' wedding. If they only knew who much it's not worth it. It's a major mistake and having those repayments draining your new marriage, on top of every other new cost, will often taint the memory of the day. Be smart, save up or budget down.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to disagree. She is not a Jewish girl and should not be expected to be held up to that religion's standards and culture. You can respect religion and opinion without conforming to it. My fiancè's family is very active Mormon. I'm not wearing their modest dresses and standards of clothing when we get married despite the beliefs and feelings of the family. We are our own unit and we make decisions based on us. It doesn't sound like her fiancé asked her to cover. Laying down these boundaries with parents are essential, especially if they are preparing to raise children together with either family being involved in that process.

I thought her mother came off as very mean-spirited. The bride to be understood and was willing to cover her tattoo for the wedding. No one asked her to get rid of her tattoo, just to cover it for the wedding. If she couldn't do that compromise, that marriage is going to be an unhappy one. This bride was smart. She received points from her new family. Regardless of what you think, it's both families, not just the bride's. Something as simple as temporarily covering a tattoo is not the end of the world.

My ex MIL called the preacher and asked what she could provide in the way of food because she didn't think that my mother wouldn't provide enough! Smart preacher, he said to ask my mom. She was Italian and expected sit down meals at weddings. We didn't have that kind of money nor did I want that kind of reception. What she should have been more worried about is making sure her only boy was man enough to be married! He wasn't and 40+ years later still isn't. When it was time to cut the cake, he didn't want to because he 'didn't like cake'. His mom had to come convince him to get up and go do the cake cutting ceremony. It went downhill from there. I wish I knew what kind of MIL to be careful of at that time. I would have never married him.

Because even though the most important is to find a dress that you find beautiful, most brides also care that others find them beautiful as well. (Contrary to what this show portrays, I never had that "this is the one" moment, I made sure to try a ton of dresses and there were many contenders that I was completely in love with). I only brought my mom and my sister though. While I love my friends, their opinion on my wedding dress was not very important to me. I asked my MIL if she wanted to be at my dress appointments but she declined because she didn't want me to feel pressured which I thought was really thoughtful of her :)

exactly! No way am I taking a loan out for any aspect of the wedding if I ever get married. I will save and spend the money that I have! I had a cousin who basically had a $15,000 budget... until the credit card got involved and it was over $30,000 by the end. That didn't include the private island for a week in Fiji for the honeymoon or the week after for staying in New Zealand (we're Australian). It took them years to pay it off and now they are separated. No way no how should anyone go down that round!

Mj Machie....fully agree with you, the couple will have to set up very firm rules and establish from the start what values are important for their new family and both need to stand up for them....but I fear potential disagreement ahead of them especially when it is about the children/holidays etc. What I really do not understand is that the mother in law argues that her rejection of a tattoo said is based on her religion. She said (as far as I understood) that a tattoo is not allowed in the jewish religion as it “disintegrates” the body. Yet the same religion promotes or even requires male circumcision at a young age in order to enter a religious life. Circumcision is a non-revocable, life-long change to a human body and usually carried out well below the legal age of consent. A tattoo is revocable and only skin-deep thus superficial design and legally only allowed as off age of consent which the bride respected as she was 18 yrs old when she got hers. Ambiguity in standards ? I wish the couple all the best and that they enjoy their Hollywood themed wedding.

A sign that this "God thing" goes deep and affects every aspect of your life, even the children you will have. The tatoos however are a heathen practice, the very opposite you might say, and one of the things commanded not to do because those outside the covenant practice it as part of their religion. To my best knowledge, that is. Haven't read/thought about this in ages...

I can say this from experience. If you have a problem with ANYTHING the bride wants DON’T SAY ANYTHING. It’s not YOUR wedding. My mother and family nearly ruined my entire bridal experience from the day I tried on dresses (mother said I looked like a stuffed sausage in casing) to my wedding day when they all thought it was their day instead of mine. @Z Q Piercings are considered non-permanent because if you take the earring or nose rings or what have you out, the flesh will eventually close up, so they are okay under Jewish law. A tattoo is permanent and therefore is considered on the same level as cutting yourself to create scars, or artificial implants, or chopping off a finger (which was done in some cultures as a sign of mourning.) Henna is okay, tattoos not.

B nope. Desecrate - to treat (a sacred place or thing) with violent disrespect; violate. Circumcision is a holy thing in the Jewish tradition so it can’t be defined as a desecration.

circumcision was done not just for religious practice as a holy ritual (opposite of desecration) but also a way to prevent infection in times when people weren’t the most hygienic. i personally as a jewish person don’t see why we need to do it in the modern day and i personally think it’s kinda messed up but there is a good historical basis for it’s benefits at the time and holy nature

Hate to say it but overall, the daughter’s body is better taken care of than the MIL. Gluttony is to be avoided for Jews as well.. I really struggle with this one, I get it, but let’s be real.. Obesity leads to many many health problems and it does not care for our temple🫣

This HAS to be staged. Considering the MIL has no problem with the wedding being held at a theater and not a temple, a tattoo SHOULD NOT bother her this much. The only mention the Torah makes of a tattoo is Leviticus 19:28 “You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead nor incise any marks on yourself: I am the Lord.” Rabbi’s have very conflicting views on what this passage means, whether it means to not tattoo one’s self at ALL, or to refrain only from tattoos that refer to God, considering ear piercing is not controversial at all. This is why MOST Jewish cemeteries do allow people with tattoos to be buried there, it’s a common myth that none do, you’re more likely to find one that does than one that doesn’t.

Depending on the families, some choose to uphold the ancient tradition of having it at the groom’s house where it used to be stated “the groom’s father built special quarters for the married couple.” However many Jewish people, both reform and orthodox, choose to have the wedding ceremony itself on synagogue grounds (generally in a courtyard) because the chuppah is already set up under an open sky to be in direct contact with the stars. The entire wedding they’re explaining is unequivocally not a Jewish ceremony. From the bride and groom having the same reception, to getting married indoors. For a mother that claims to be this strictly Jewish, there are a LOT of other things about this wedding she would take issue with that aren’t just the tattoo.

@@bek2100 Even if the chuppah is outside, the reception itself (them having it together) is very unorthodox. I’m Irish and while I don’t have any tattoos screaming it, I’m certainly not a Christian. I’m pagan, my lifelong best friend is Jewish, and I’ve always said if I️ had to pick an organized religion to practice I’d love to practice Judaism, it fits my beliefs. If I️ married a Jewish man, Irish or not, my children would be raised Jewish. You’re making broad assumptions about an entire country. Not every Irish person is a Christian and being Irish and proud of it is ABSOLUTELY okay, and not rubbing anything in grandma’s face unless she’s making the same baseless assumptions you are. Unless I️ missed something at no point did she say “We’re raising our children to be Christians and I️ want to show off my tattoo as a reminder for grandma.”

it depends on the mother in law. Rude mother in laws should not be invited but there is such a thing as a kind mother in law. My future mother in law is amazing and sweet and i feel so blessed to have her in my life. I would invite her to my fitting in a heart beat.
