The Gilbert Grape character appeared to be morose, depressed. Depp says he maybe didn't have to play it that way, or that maybe he absorbed or internalized too much of the character, which sounded like what Heath Ledger did for his Joker.

You could kind of tell he was using this role as some sort of cathartic vessel to address some unresolved issues (whatever they were). It's what makes his delivery so authentic and one of his best. This film is haunting and I love revisiting it. It's a mood and it's still hard to put my finger on exactly what it is.

Yeah it’s sad, I hate when that happens because Johnny has enough trouble talking and getting his point across as it is, without all the constant laughing, screaming, cheering or just random “I love you Johnny!” that get him distracted. I just wish people would just sit there and listen to what he’s got to say because he’s an actually pretty interesting person if you let him talk.
