It doesn't look like their 970 is quite up to running this game on ultra that well, to be honest. I have two Titan Black cards in SLI and the game looks a lot better than here. May be related to KZbin conversion and compression issues as well.

I worked on Dirt 3. One of the biggest challenges was fitting everything onto the 360. I would imagine the differences will be more apparent on higher rez video. The object object placement, trees and ground cover look great in 3. Alot of time and money was spent on those bespoke landscapes.

It looks like they went for full realtime lighting instead of baked lightmaps (the later having raytraced shadows and bounce lighting). Same trade off Dishonored went through when you look at Dishonored 2 for example. It allows them to build much bigger games, much faster - basically. But you're right, Dirt 3 looks tons better.

Dirt Rally was made using a handful of people as a 'pet project', using Dirt 3's engine and creating a hardcore rally sim. It was a way to test the waters, since the vast majority of consumers would prefer easier, arcadey racers over challenging sims, so they won't get much sales. Therefore they couldn't invest heaps of money into the game unless they want to go bankrupt, so with the limited resources they had they put into getting the tracks and driving physics right, instead of the graphics. I find that Dirt Rally is one of the most engaging and satisfying racing games this decade, and I didn't have any problems with the graphics as it was still very fun to play. Too bad a sequel is unlikely.

Dirt 3 is more stylized and it is shinier I'll give it that. Dirt Rally has loads of visual details that don't show themselves off, road geometry for instance, and a far more detailed physics model. The tracks are also much longer. They are accurate reconstructions of real-life rally stages. There is also significantly more detail in the weather system, and I noticed a lot of copy-pasted content in Dirt 3 where it looked like you were seeing the same surfaces and areas over again, while Dirt Rally seemed to be more convincingly natural. All that aside though, Dirt Rally was a venture project for Codemasters to gauge interest in serious Rally sim games. Graphically on the surface level Dirt 3 and Dirt rally might seem close on the level despite Dirt Rally being developed for a fraction of the budget - gameplay wise though, they aren't even close. Just look at how the cars handle in the video, Dirt 3 may as well be an arcade gokart racer.

Ops Racing No, but i tried it. No big difference for me... I' m playing it on keyboard. I was playing it with assists enabled on 5, driving really carefully, but its unplayable. (and I dont have any problems in RBR playing it on keyboard too) Cars in this game are just unrealistic. Real life cars are acting differently. :/

DiRT 3 is more arcadey, but it's got more mods, and there is one that makes the physics closer to real life and another that makes the sounds also more realistic. But off the shelf, DiRT Rally has better physics. Also, keep in mind DiRT Rally has no ai difficulty options. Finally, DiRT 3 has gymkhana which, well, some people hated it some people liked it :/

as a person who has played both heavily, they both have their strengths and weaknesses. dirt rally has much better and realistic physics, as it is a sim. dirt 3 is more arcade feeling but, it has a much better atmosphere. better graphics, the slow motion effects were awesome, same to the sound effect for it. it had a very good soundtrack that just gave it this unbeatable good vibe to it, that dirt rally failed to capture. not to mention the thing with triangles they did for dirt 3 haha AND theres gymkhana. however rally cross in dirt rally is much much better and feels like an actual competition race. it all comes down to what you want to get, a realistic sim that is very challenging to win at but is very good to practice realisticly driving a race car (dirt rally), or a more overall fun game to play (dirt 3)

DiRT Rally is more photorealistic, than Dirt3. Also Dirt3 have a lot of photo filters and more contrast, thats why people think, it looks better, cause real life almost never has such colors. First two tracks in Dirt3 also was different, we can watch sunset or sunrise, but in Dirt Rally we saw afternoon, where we can't see the sun, after this, it's difficult to compare, but still colors and shadows on Dirt Rally - wins. Last winter races. Dirt Rally wins as for me, too, cause it has real winter. I live in Russia, and I know, what I am saying)) Just look on the winter road or sides of it, sides are very complicated, road is more flat, than on Dirt3, it's also very real. Also particles and foggy on Dirt Rally side. So, in conclusion, I have to say, Dirt Rally Reminds me CMR2 but with photorealistic lights and shadows, and much more polygons, and Dirt3 now looks, how fairytail with all this bright lights, photofilters and oversaturated colors.

Wrong, there is no delay during post processing, but I understand why people think so. How much delay you have, depends on the screen and of course on your FPS. If you ever got more delay by changing settings, check your fps, i bet you have less than before...

To my eyes, certainly in the non snowy stages, Dirt 3 looks much better than DR. I have to admit I'm really surprised by this, how can an older game on less powerful hardware look better than a brand new game on brand new hardware?? Only in the wonderful world of games!!!

DR will make you want to punch a wall, or pull your hair out because it is so unforgiving. I bought a Logitech G29 to use for it and I sucked so bad. After a while I began to get better. One thing is for sure, blazing through some stages as fast as you can go, gripping the steering wheel so tight your fingers go numb, and finally make it to the end and see you made it in the top 3, makes you feel like a million bucks.

Wow i have said this numerous times in other vids and been laughed at. I own both games and Dirt 3 DOES look better. In fact WRC 6 looks better than Dirt Rally imo (maxed out). Also i own a 970 as well and you can max out Dirt 3 at 4k with 4x MSAA. Try it if you already haven't, it looks amazing.

It looks prettier, for sure, but it's not realistic with it's visuals, while Rally is more akin to what you'd see in real life. Truly an example of realism vs fabrication in video games, which is better? Plus, gameplay wise, Rally bodies Dirt 3 so there's that.

For example, at 4:32, you'd probably think that the car in Dirt 3 looks better because it has the snow on it, but in real life snow wouldn't stick to the rear like that (unless it was left to sit outside, which it most likely wasn't), and at 5:15, the windshield effects are more realistic. The car runs hot so snow would melt when it touches the car.

I’m really glad Dirt Rally went with more realistic lighting and surface detail. A lot of people in the comments here saying Dirt 3 looks better, but I think they are mostly referring to the slightly yellow or blue filters and exaggerated lighting and particle effects. If you compare gameplay footage to real rally footage, Dirt Rally is far more accurate.

On my system with both maxed out, Rally is by far the better looking detail wise. Dirt 3 has more stylized look but the textures are low res in comparison and less real looking.

YT compresses the video so that the texture quality is at a similar level. But as you play in the dirt rally that is where you see more details. Few of the DiRT3 graphics is more the color of dirt rally is more so bleak at times by going eg forest gives a better atmosphere. Well, but then you have to play a little and do not judge because such a film.

What bothers me is that Dirt Ralley looks like plastic and the small detailed foliage is almost nonexistant to Dirt 3. Doesn't effect gameplay much but takes me out of the immersiveness a little bit. I played both at 4K at my friend's house and Dirt 3 was by far better to me graphics wise.

I have the same graphics card, loaded the same track and car on Ultra settings...You are definitely missing some textures. I did a side-by-side comparison and I was able to point out significant graphical differences between your Dirt Rally and mine. Check your settings. first of all, it is fake. Dirt rally is not that terrible when talking about graphics, as this video shows. It is true that the shadows were made brighter in the newer game, but that happened because it improves the gameplay. I played the old game, and I can tell you that racing trough deep shady forest it not that pleasant as the sun is so shiny and flashy. As for Dirt Rally, as I said, the graphical changes were made to improve the gameplay.

A lot of the small details get lost because of KZbin's compression. I will say that out of the box, Dirt3's colors are more vibrant, but that was a flashy arcade racer. Rally is on a whole different level in terms of driving physics and handling characteristics.

The shadowing and coloring in Dirt3 actually makes it look like a video game more so than Dirt Rally. The contrast in Dirt 3 is actually too high and gives it that video game look that, in some instances, Dirt Rally hides for a split moment.
