I bought one of these on a whim...because I have the impulse control of an 8 year old boy. Went into my local dealer to just biy some 2-cycle oil for my old Toro snowblower. Walked out with this, and forgot the damn oil! But it is an absolute ANIMAL! I love it!

Fantastic looking mower. Congrats. I have a commercial Toro 21". It's a great machine but the Scag looks like it's at a whole different level. The construction looks amazing. You'll have do a video that shows us the machine in action.

@@SteenerBernard Awesome. Looking forward to seeing it. Looks like that mower, with its deep deck and powerful engine, should do very well with leaves.

My wife won't run a gas mower and she wants to help mow our property. The Scag is working well.

Just bought one of these Scag 21" mowers with the 7hp Kohler 224cc engine today. I know it weighs 140 lbs, but I'll be damned if it doesn't handle as good if not better than the Toro 22298 with the Kawasaki FJ180 KAI, which only weighs around 112 lbs or so. I don't know what it is, must be the weight distribution or something, but the Toro felt less nimble to me.
@joeraptor18 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I have the Toro 22297 model (same as yours only no BBC). I wanted to get another 21 inch but the Toro 21" commercials have gotten so expensive where I live up in Canada. This new Scag is a little cheaper but has way more power with that Kohler engine. I was concerned about the weight as the Toro weighs 120-125 lbs while this Scag comes in at 145 lbs which is the same weight as a Toro Timemaster. Based on your experiences, it seems like the weight isn't much of an issue. How have you found the machine to be in terms of cutting....bagging and mulching especially in wet thick grass.....better or worse than the Toro. Thank You.

How has this mower been doing for you? Still happy with it?
@SteenerBernard6 ай бұрын
I'm still happy with it for the most part. Now that the engine is broke in, it's much easier to start. Started on 2nd pull the other day, that was a first. I mowed with it for around 2 hours, it was quite the workout on my hilly uneven ground. It mulches great even with a dull blade. It seems to use a lot less fuel than I thought it might with all the power it has. That's what comes to mind at the moment

What happened with the hour meter?
@SteenerBernard Жыл бұрын
I bought a mount, it was the wrong size. I need to drill holes in the shroud to mount it. Because of drought, I've only used it once. So it at most, has about an hour on it. I'm looking forward to seeing how it mulches leaves. Thanks for watching 🙂

Have you performed your first oil change yet? These engines have three oil drain plugs from what I've read, one on each side and one on the bottom. Just wondering whether you knew if the drain plug on the bottom of the engine was accessible via the underside of the mower deck?
@SteenerBernard9 ай бұрын
I haven't done an oil change yet. It's not easy cross referencing the oil filters, was looking for a way around the expensive factory filter. I'm not positive about the correct drain plug. Mines in winter storage or I'd look and give you my opinion.
@StilettoSniper9 ай бұрын
@@SteenerBernard Thanks for responding back. Were you able to determine the part number for the factory oil filter? I don't see it listed in either the Kohler owner's or the service manual. How expensive is it?
@SteenerBernard9 ай бұрын
@@StilettoSniper The 7hp Kohler Command PRO CV224 uses a 055-920 Oil Filter from what I found. Stens makes a filter that fits also, On Amazon it's Stens High-Capacity Kohler 52 050 02-S. I can't guarantee my research is correct since I haven't bought one yet. Filters are priced from around $11 to over $20

How do you like the mower so far? Any issues with mower weight, starting, etc.?
@SteenerBernard Жыл бұрын
I'm still happy I purchased it. My property is hilly and it will climb steep hills impressively. Yes, it's heavy but I see it as a plus because it helps with traction. I did have issues starting it after I made the video, the fuel line was installed so it was pressing on the off switch no matter what the throttle positron was. It was an easy fix once I saw the problem. No regrets so far. Thanks for watching 😊

Thanks for making this video I was researching the scag 21 and the Milwaukee mower and I see you have both 😅 any comparison? I'm trying to decide between gas or battery. Thank you in advance 😊
@SteenerBernard11 ай бұрын
I could write a very long response to this, the Milwaukee and Scag have nothing in common except 21" mowing width. Milwaukee : Light weight, easy to maneuver, low maintenance, easy to store, easy to access blades (folds for storage exposing blades), simple operation (my wife volunteers to mow with it) , extremely quite, speed control is excellent, slow to very fast. decent run time with 12ah batteries on low power mode, Doesn't mow or mulch as good as my gas mowers (Scag & Honda) but it comes with low drag blades that extend battery life. There are a few stragglers and leaves are bigger pieces. This year I think I'll buy mulching blades too see if mowing performance improves. In it's defence I've never mowed with it on high power mode. Should do this to see how long batteries last and if it cuts better. Can't mow all day unless you have several big batteries (batteries work in pairs) I bought the Scag because hydro transmission on my 22 year old Honda was slipping on inclines. I've had a little buyers remorse with the Scag. It's hard to maneuver because it's so heavy. Mine is hard to start when cold (removing air filter and blocking intake with my wife's hand while I pull the cord is ridiculous) the choke must not work or needs adjusting. Mine came with fuel line installed on top of off switch preventing it from starting at all when I first got it, I should post the video. The good part is you can mow and mulch all day and not worrry about finishing. It stripes great and with only one blade, mulching is surprising good. It holds grass and leaves up in the deck and works at it until there's almost nothing left. That turned out to be a negative last fall. The 7hp engine is so powerful, the BBC (blade brake clutch) will slip before engine will stall, found this out mulching wet leaves (I don't recommend this, wonder how much life my BBC lost from it doing this and smelled like hot brakes on a semi). I worked the Scag pretty hard one day and it proved to be fairly fuel efficient. It will climb very steep hills, basically dragging you with it. This is why I bought it ( for hills on my property) and this fact alone is why I'm still happy with it. It's been a love hate relationship. Lots of pluses and minuses for both mowers, they are entirely different machines. I bought a 1.1 acre lot and didn't want to beat my Milwaukee into submission, that's the reason I bought the Scag.

Did you have any luck installing that hour meter on this mower? Looks like I need to remove the recoil starter and the shroud to get enough access to the spark plug cable in order to wrap the hour meter wire around it 5 times. Curious if you found the same.

I never installed the hour meter, I never found the perfect spot. I would of had to drill holes in something to mount it securely. Wasn't crazy about that.

Where did you purchase it from?
@SteenerBernard Жыл бұрын
I purchased it a Scag authorized dealership using the honor the brave program. (Thanks Scag! 😀) Other units I was looking at didn't have a military discount until you crossed around $4,000. Like Toro, Exmark. Didn't want a Honda because of recall drama. There aren't many heavy duty 21" mowers

I really liked this video. I’m looking for a new mower for the upcoming mowing season. I’m retired now and I mow some of my neighbors yards for fun money. My old Honda is lame and it’s time to do the humane thing and put it out of it’s misery.(I’m not going to spend any more money fixing it). I looked at the high end Toro’s but there 1000$ and they have a lot of issues from my research. For that price I expect it to work. I don’t want to hear about motor issues, etc. Scags are expensive but maybe I can find a dealer that honors military discount too. Would at least pay for the sales tax. I could be wrong but when you bolted up the handle I think you put the carriage bolts in wrong. The rounded head should be on the inside which would match up with the other ones. That’s why you had trouble tightening that one bolt.
