Why does the belt loop from the top going to the bottom? Would it rub on itself if it were looped from top to top? Or is it simply to make the load spin opposite of the engine?

No idea probably makes like tension on both side in a opposite way to make the belt fall off

I am not sure, but that is how they always did it. We had a hammer mill that we ran by belt from the clutch pulley of an "A" John Deere. And the belt would remain in place very well. I wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the belt remaining in place and not migrating on the pulleys.

Stops the belt from bouncing and reverses the direction.
