I agree with you 100%, as a former auto painter I always told people your paint job is only as good as your prep work. I use that same train of thought in my model building as well even though I don't build for show I still have my pride and I refuse to cut corners when it comes to my paint work.

The last model I built was in 1986, I still have a bunch of built and unbuilt kits in the closet, I always sanded with 400 and finished off with 600 and used wasted 600 that was maybe the equivalent of 800 and there are no sanding scratches anywhere and this is with spray enamel right out of a can, with that being said I'm wanting to get back into building and am amazed at how much it has changed, I use 3,000, 2,000, 1,500, 1,000 on my car for touch ups, shit 40 years ago I never knew of anything finer than 600!, if I ever do dig one out I'm going to finish with the finest grit possible and see what happens!

Yes. And as far as "BITE". 12K gives you the "BITE" that is needed. I've never had tape pull my paint off.

Thanks for the great video and hope you're feeling better. I was talking to two young guys at Hobby Lobby who like to build. We got talking about many things including finishes. I mentioned your comments and directed them to your KZbin site and recommended they take a look. Here's to keeping the hobby going.

i just returned to the hobby after 25=yrs away. that said anyone who doesn't believe that Mr Yosts method works the best is lying to themselves. And if you are new to the hobby and want to learn the right way here it is... Remember most people want the easy way. This takes work and time but pays off in the end.

The only thing that made my painting go to the next level was learning this. When I started sanding my body's all the way to 120000 including my primer and paint you could automatically see the difference

Don, I hope your doing well, I can't begin to understand how your feeling. First of all, you do beautiful work. Question, after priming your model, do you go threw the same sanding prosses Up to 12,000 grit? Please help me with this. You stay healthy ( God bless)

It’s a model… sure… but like anything you want to paint and have a mirror finish… hell check that, matte finish any finish, prep is 90% of the finish. It needs proper prep work, you always want a smooth surface. Even porcelain/fiberglass you want a smooth surface. If you need “bite” you use a self etching hydraulic primer. This way the base eats in while the top retains the smooth surface. Just my opinion, and experience anyway. New to modeling but not new to painting.

Shoot we usually use 600-800 to paint full size cars , and at least 2000 for cut n polish. Now somebody smarter than the average bear, would think one would have to go much higher in grits on a smaller object......

That is terrible advice sanding only up to 400.. Even with a primer coat you are still going to see those scratch marks to an extent. Glad to see that your health is improving Donn.

Happy to hear that you continue to do well! Lol, you didn’t need to get that crap to score more likes 😊 Was curious why you say start with 220 grit not 320? Is it because it’ll remove more imperfections to start? Thanks have a great week!🙏

Donn, Glad you are doing well. Now, regarding your DVDs. They make the entire modeling process idiot proof. They are well worth the cost. I continually review them. It irks me that there are folks that are just too cheap to appreciate your time and expertise.

So I have a question. I’m new to this I’m working on my sixth model and I see you say to put around 10 light coats of paint. Now my question is how do you keep your airbrush from drying up? How much time do you wait in between each coat?
