The audio detection works surprisingly well, even on some crummy live demo recordings I had (best to clean them up first). It's good enough for a start, as Davide suggests. Don't expect miracles...

My thoughts exactly, good enough for a start and a ways to go. We are knuckling down on the quality of audio detection as we speak and hopeful of a significant improvement in 2.1 or 2.2 latest. Stay tuned.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, I had been eyeing Scaler for quite a long time, I was trying to see how I could proceed to possibly use Scaler with Reason ... There would have been a solution, by using another VST which allowed to make a link with Reason which did not have and still does not have "midi / routing"! (...) Suddenly Scaler2 came out. I did a test last night, to see if it could be useful to me (still on Reason). And in a few minutes, on the beginning of the next song, something in 6/8, Scaler offered me four or five chords, I continued to search a little and I ended up with an interesting choice of different chords. Thanks to "Drag & Drop" quickly I could place the chords I had chosen in the Reason sequencer and then possibly choose a different sound! In short this is very useful, in the end. I had tried so many different tricks other than Scaler to try to achieve this result and very few convinced me. While there, I'm going to buy Scaler2 to advance faster and in a fun way! Artistically. #MrJimX 🃏

I am a Scaler 2 owner and fan, but I think it would be better to play down expectations for audio detection, lest this excellent plugin be judged negatively for what is probably the least important of its features. Most of the audio examples have chord stabs, which are the easiest to detect. People who try using it for more complicated audio will be frustrated. All software still struggles with chord detection, and little Scaler cannot be expected to be at the forefront on this.
@ThomsenTower

I must acknowledge that in the last example Dave says something like “let’s see if we can get anything out of this”.

Thank you. I am really happy that we managed to push audio detection down the list of killer features as it initially was because to be frank, if you sold me on that I would be disappointed. Still, when I actually use it to ascertain key and chords it actually impresses me. We will improve this and I would aim for Scaler to be as good as technology allows within the coming period.

I really like Scaler and got the full product. Just a question: When Scaler detects the chords from an audio file, does it remember the length this cord is played, too? So when I record the MIDI, does it have the same play length as the original audio?

Thanks David - really helpful video. One question though...I'm trying to adjust the threshold for audio detection and it snaps to different points instead of letting me adjust it small amounts. This is stopping me from setting it at the optimum position. Can you tell me how to turn this "snap" type feature off? I'm using Scaler in Cubase 10.5 Pro. Many thanks, Phil
@davidecarbonemusic
@davidecarbonemusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, not ever noticed or heard of the snapping being an issue with me or other users. I guess that is a code implementation thing in terms of allowing finer quantisation of positioning. To be honest we have made much great progress with audio detection which will improve the detection far more than threshold placement. Please stay tuned, I'm hoping Scaler 2.1 with improved audio detection and lots of great new content will be with us in August 2020

yeah scaler in reason is not entirely compatible with limitations of reason's midi parameters. i would like to be able to control multiple instruments via scaler within reason, but i have to literally pull the midi out and futz with the various sizes the midi file puts out. sometimes its a full, other times its scaled where there's a quarter note missing. very frustrating bc i am not using 90% of what scaler could do for me as a songwriter bc of reason and their horrible midi control.

I haven't yet worked with Scaler, but I'm sure there are things you can do to the audio to make detection more accurate, like adjusting dynamics and eq'ing to focus on the harmonic areas of the audio. I'm not apologizing for it, but every audio detection application app can benefit from some pre-procesing of the audio. It would however be helpful if the tools and algorithms for optimizing the source material were contained in the program itself.

scaler 2 simply doesn't work with reason properly. it's reason's fault due to bad midi implementation in the software. this has been a common complaint amongst reason customers as far back as 5 years, and they just don't listen. they instead do stupid things like add 4k monitoring and boast that as a feature. reason was sold and the new direction is lackluster to say the least.

8:20 "what I'm gonna do now is INPUT" No. What you're gonna do now is "SIDECHAIN". I'm not being pedantic, I'm saying it's a lot less confusing and explains the difference between a VSTi instance and a VST (FX) instance of scaler. It's always better to be cogent and concise. Especially when someone is trying to understand how this works in a different DAW. It's actually pretty cool that Scaler lets you choose between audio sidechain vs track midi. Very well done.

You are being pedantic and you are correct to do so. Apologies. As you can imagine it has been a very crazy few months for us with little sleep. So choosing the right word on the fly can be more difficult than you think! Thanks for pointing it out.

Not so bad on install and there are font and window resizing options. Have you tried the demo? The DEV team are improving visibility so it will be better in coming updates. Do try the demo.

Potential sample rate issue? Have everything at 44.1 and 16 bit to start. Audio detection has improved, otherwise head over to scalerplugin.com and see if any users can help-you there

Please fix the audio detection mode as it´s utter shite! Won´t detect properly, sometimes it spits out 5 random chords, sometimes it does nothing at all. Manual read, masterclasses watched, hours of fiddling, no dice!

Hi Joachim we would guess maybe there may be an issue with the way you are using detection or sample rates etc. Head over to the community at scalerplugin.com and see if you can get some help there. Whilst the audio detection side of things is no Melodyne in scaler we use it with 100% effect to fond chords and scales or samples and audio.

Great video but I get the feeling Davide doesn't really want to talk and share.. The lack of energy in his voice makes me fall asleep, then I miss most of the video...

Compatible with all DAWs?? I’ve just got off the scaler forum where I was told scaler either does not work or have very limited features with GarageBand True or not true ??

To be fair it’s a stretch to call GarageBand a Digital Audio Workstation. Most if not all plugin manufacturers don’t support it. The Scaler team tell me they will have it fully functional in GB soon.

Phone support Greg? This is 2023! The Scaler devs are well renowned for their personal support, you'll see them lurking around here but mainly over at forum.scalerplugin.com where they and thousands of users will help you with any questions you have. Also don't forget there is the manual and the vids around here too. Why would anyone want 3rd party hired phone support?!?!

Audio to MIDI in Scaler 2 : Absolutely not working! Test : I've recorded 3 chords in Scaler, converted them to audio (sounds exactly the same as the midi track). And let them analyse with Scaler audio. Result : completely different chords! So Scaler can't even analyse the chords who were made with scaler itself...... I get so fed up with all the extatic reactions, when these people even don't own the software!

Can you check the troubleshooting over at the scaler forum forum.scalerplugin.com/t/scaler-2-troubleshooting/3601 If you have some results or a video post it there. The audio detection works fine for us in determining key and scale and there some anomalies with chord recognition based on what you are feeding it but that is the nature of the beats when it come to audio detection. The dev team is on a mission to significant improve this in the coming weeks. Also please consider scaler is $50. It does hundreds of things in addition to audio detection. Melodyne the king of audio detection is $500 and it specialises in that one thing.
