Scallop Diving in Scotland - Amazing Garlic Scallops catch and cook on the Firepit

In this video, I headed over to the West Coast of Scotland freediving for Scallops. The aim was to get a good handful to make a nice catch and cook for dinner.
The water was crystal clear and the weather was perfect, this was a fantastic day to be in the water foraging.
As well as plenty of Scottish Scallops we also saw big Starfish, as well as some good (but not legal) size brown crab.
I managed to find a good handful of big tasty Scallops to take back to the log cabin I was staying in. Once back there it was a quick bit of prep so they were ready to be cooked on the firepit. I simply placed some butter in the shells and then put them on the hot coals. It only took about 3-4 minutes before they were ready to come off and be added into the pasta.

Can you find any of those king scallops of the coast of East Lothian do you know?

I have not dived that area but my gut would say no sadly. I have not seen any scallops on the east coast as much as I would love them to be here.

Aiming to stay in north west Scotland in 2024. I dive for scallops and crayfish at home in Tasmania. Do you need a license in Scotland ? Can you use scuba or only snorkel/free dive ? Is there a season ? Would be grateful for any info !

I know for certain you don’t need a licence when freediving for scallops and lobster. As far as I know you aren’t allowed to take any lobster here on scuba gear though, not sure if the same applies to scallops. I only freedive so I’m not fully up on the rules for scuba. I would recommend looking up the exact rules on the local fisheries site though. Cheers 👍🏼

@andrewhall7853 indeed the roe is really nice to eat as well! I just left out this time as the scallop meat was huge! I have never tried the frills though so not sure on that one 🤷‍♂️

@@costischaller4227 it’s an amazing bit of coastline, I love it up there. The drive is worth it alone! I don’t actually know when my next trip west will be so probably won’t be around in august as I’ll be sticking to the east coast. Hi, This is on the far West coast of Scotland, near a town called Mallaig.
