Interestingly enough, I've heard that the team behind the Revo sold the design for the K101 and their unreleased "mini" console for these things. The RS97 also has a custom linux distro port called OpenDingux that adds a lot of better functionality to the unit. Another thing to note is that the GBA slot is just an interface for the micro SD card. Don't know why the hell they did that since it really confuses people, but if you take apart the cart you can see that it is just a straight up weird adapter. I know a lot of consumers wouldn't really look this stuff up, but maybe with OpenDingux it runs a bit better...

@@Localhorst86 That's not what I mean. Soft reset is software operated and doesn't power cycle. It's called hard reset because it resets the core components, followed by a reboot of the firmware. A hard reset power cycles the device, a soft reset triggers software that resets the device in a controlled manner. If the firmware is stuck, it prevents the reset button from working.
@Localhorst864 жыл бұрын

Hardware and software emulation is spectacular. It offers one of the best retro gaming experiences in the modern era. Although imperfect, emulation continues to evolve and improve. Gives you the ability to create save states, rewind/fast-forward, input cheats, use a range of peripherals, and most importantly works well on modern TV’s. I’m exhausted of the lame retro gaming elitism where anything short of original hardware is blasphemous. Those same influencers who ridicule emulation, helped to cause outrageous price spikes that made collecting original hardware/software impossible. Emulation has fewer barriers of entry and will serve to preserve these old games long after the original hardware/software ceases to function. OpenEmu on Mac is one of the best emulation station setups I’ve ever used. It’s much more user friendly than Retroarch, and has a beautifully clean UI.
@rerez6 жыл бұрын
A third party made a custom firmware that fixes some of the issues with the Retrogame console. I checked it out and they've done a good job so far but there are plenty of roms/emulators that still do not operate properly with it. A huge problem with this fix as well is that you need to tear down your console and download additional third party software to flash it to work. While a few of us are capable of doing something like this it might be advanced for some users. The original company selling these devices is NOT offering a fix. Whenever you need to take your system apart to fix it they've entered into what I believe to be a poor consumer experience. Unless the seller or manufacturer offers a fix or pre-installs this more advanced firmware update all my points about the console remain valid. If you're willing to take the risk and are okay with buying a new device knowing it will not work on arrival, this is an option for you. I'd recommend multiple other portable emulation devices that can probably run everything this device attempts to do but out of the box. This is STILL not a good purchase as far as I can see.
@thewiirocks6 жыл бұрын
Since when has any Chinese company provided "support" for their systems? ;-) The only reason to buy an RS-97 is if you want to mod it. There may be the occasional glitch to fix (e.g. loading and saving run.dge in Glutexto) but it's otherwise really impressive! I've got the following emulators up and going with 1.3 firmware: - Colecovision - Atari 2600 - Atari 5200 / 800 (bug: button 2 doesn't work on 5200) - Amstrad CPC - DOSBox - FinalBurnAlpha (both GCW & A320 version) - NES - GB / GBC - NeoGeo - Atari Lynx - Intellivision (you need to double quote the $1 in the run.dge file) - Wonderswan - Playstation (disable music for better performance) - Sega Genesis - Super Nintendo - NeoGeo Pocket - Sega Master System - ZX Spectrum (be warned: this is REAL time tape loads!) - PC Engine / Turbografix - PC Engine CD There are only a few emulators I'm still messing with to get to a working state. Half the fun is building yourself an ultimate portable console with all your favorite games! Practically my entire basement of classic systems and games is now in my handheld! MWhahahahaha!

Custom firmwares are hacked versions of official firmware, what's available for the RS-97 is a Linux distribution ported from the Dingoo handhelds that were popular a while back. The emulators running on the platform are actually some of the best that are available for the SoC's power envelope and most of them stem from (or at least have relation with) versions on the PSP, a system frequently brought up even now as a viable emulation handheld. Games run about as well with similar levels of compatibility, only since the screen resolution is closer to the original systems it can actually look a little better. Running custom firmware on it is not hard. It doesn't even require opening it up anymore, though even then it's just a 5 screws and sliding a microsd card out with another one flashed with a firmware image. It's like setting up a Raspberry Pi, only with considerably less steps. Ultimately it's a 600mhz ARM SoC with a 320x480(really!) screen and some decent buttons for 45 bucks. If this product was sold as a barebones "kit", much like the Raspberry Pi or PCs are and was the same price, would it be worth it then? EDIT: To put this in perspective, PicoDrive is more accurate compared to the garbage AtGames releases in just about every way, and the RS-97 is capable of running just about every game full speed with the notable exception of Virtua Racing. I've noticed the occasional graphical glitch, PicoDrive isn't perfect, but it's still better than what is available from official channels. I would think that alone isn't too bad for 45 bucks?
@PrimeTF6 жыл бұрын
Maybe because most of us gamers aren't nearly as nitpicky as you are if you nitpick on ANY error in game. Even if it's a minor visual bug, you immediately assume it's trying to scam you. If you tried downloading a top brand emulator for these games, you'd probably sue the makers of the emulator because you didn't think to tweak your settings to accommodate for your PC.

I think the consistent lag is due to frame dropping because there doesn't seem to be slowdown to go with the visual lag. It must be a problem with the frequency of the screen or something. The fact custom community firmware can make it run properly also supports this.

They probably assume it's illegal (which it isn't if you own the game(s) you are emulating) or something and don't want to discuss it for that reason.

For Retromini, funnily enough, there are multiple variations with varying degrees of quality. Most evident is the faulty blue screens, some come with them; but the more recent ones don't. Again, bad console as it is sold with good firmware. But flashing with cfw will do real good. fun fact - the Retromini's screen was said to be recycled GB micro screens.

If you took just a little time to do some research, you would see that there is custom firmware for the RS-97 that is super easy to install and makes it into a solid emulation device that only struggles with a handful of SNES games. Its a great device for the 60 dollar price tag. You are really steering people wrong by telling them to stay away from it. you should do more research next time.
@arbitor3656 жыл бұрын
That's idiotic. Anyone interested in buying it needs to know this information. He just didnt bother doing any research. This entire review is irrelevant and cringeworthy
@Qinti1016 жыл бұрын
arbitor365 The main problem is that they do not even try to sell them working right. He is reviewing something that may or may not have a fix (in this case, RS-97 does have some firmware fixes, but even then from what I read it's not that great. My GP2X Wiz gives me near flawless performance in some games people report as not working well in this machine, and how old is my machine?). He therefore reviews it AS IT IS. If it does not work from the beginning, it is something that many people will avoid. It is not a matter of doing some research, it is a matter of understanding what a consumer wants. Which this time you did not, and he did.
@arbitor3656 жыл бұрын
What kind of argument is that? You're an idiot, dude. Devices like this are made for the sole purpose of homebrew, which is what emulators are. There is one simple fact. He didnt know about the custom firmware because he was lazy and inept. It has nothing to do with any sort of principle. The fact that he doesn't mention it at all proves he doesn't know what he is talking about. Leaving out that vital information leaves everyone misinformed. This video is worthless. No one gets any value out of this video. Only a moron would defend it.
@Qinti1016 жыл бұрын
Let me put my argument in other words. In simple words, if you will. Some people will not want to go through the trouble of buying something they need to modify. Not everyone is comfortable doing whatever operation that may be necessary to either tweak, or improve something. Some are not capable because of their lack of know how. Now by that, I don't mean the simple "oh what they cannot just google it up?" know-how, I mean the entire know-how of how to do the entire thing. It may seem simple to you and me, but we are not everyone. Now, I have seen the instructions on how to update the firmware on the RS-97 AS OF TODAY, and while they are simple enough TO ME, by experience I can say very surely they won't be to everyone else. There will be people who will look at this, like you, who will say "let me look up info on how or if it can be modded", and either find or not find such info and base their purchase on it. There will be other people who, like me, already have a device that works, who will have the know-how, but will refrain from buying it because they do not see why. And there will be people who will see this machine online, not necessarily at Aliexpress or what not, but lets say, Amazon, who will just buy it because the description says it can do those things. Maybe there are positive reviews, maybe some negative, but not everyone will read them in detail, they will only see positive reviews... of something that works great but only AFTER you mod it. Some people do not even know what modding means. Some others do not even know how to format anything, and forget about asking if they did it FAT or NTFS. They may not even have a PC. These are the people who just want something that works from the beginning. Now neither you nor I belong in those segments. We know how to do research on stuff, how to find out how to tweak stuff, how to mod it if and where possible. I, however, know that not everyone has that same knowledge or willingness to do so. But you assume everyone does, or that they should have it because if not "what is wrong with them?". At least, you give the impression of that. Was this the channel to portray such an opinion? Perhaps, I do not know the audience demographics, maybe it is mostly people who know how to mod things, but I would not assume it is. But if someone searches for "Retro Game console" or "Retro Mini console", this will appear as part of the search. Me, I saw it as part of my search. With this video, I saw that it did not work with official firmware, that it needed modification, essentially, it needed a scene. I also saw information that did show that there is poor quality control, and later found out some other things on my own that led me to the conclusion that this machine was not up to my standards of reliability. Since I already have a GP2X Wiz, and having seen other reviews, I came to the conclusion that this was not an upgrade for me, more of a sidegrade which was actually a bit of a downgrade. It is my choice not to buy such a device. Some other people will see this video along with others and just say "ah, I really don't want to mess with stuff, it's not for me" and never buy it, hey, it is their choice. I don't blame them for not wanting it to be necessary to modify something for it to work. Not if pretty much everything they buy works out of the box when you buy it. What, they can't "do a little research" and modify it to work? Why should they? They are paying for a working product. That is their opinion, and their choice. And I completely understand why it makes sense. I think it would be safe to say that you thought it did not provide anything useful, because you have the console, and having modded it, you think that it is of everyone's interest to buy it as it can be modded, if they have the same needs as you. That is an incorrect assumption You also think that because you think so, no one else can think differently. That is a conceited assumption. I get the impression that, to you, the one who made this video did not do the research because you did. But he is not reviewing a modded portable console, or on how to mod it, or if it is possible to mod it. He is reviewing something as per manufacturer's specifications, as you would receive it after buying it online. And as it is, it doesn't work properly. Should he have a video update? Maybe, if it is in the scope of what his channel does. Will this deter people who will research this to make an informed purchase? Maybe, depending on what they want. To each his own. People have different needs and things they want in a handheld machine. I understand that. You do not. All you know is that because he did not include information you think is necessary (again, to me this was out of the scope of the video), that the video is useless. That's a very narrow minded opinion.

I have a retro mini but mine looks EXACTLY like the first one you reviewed, except in white. I really like mine, and I've never once had the locking up problem. Weird. @SoulcatcherLucario3 жыл бұрын
5:02 That's actually not true at all. Emulation requires a lot of power to do properly, since you're literally recreating hardware in software. Although modern emulators are decently optimized, it's completely understandable for slow down or graphical glitches to occur on lower spec hardware. It also depends on what *type* of emulator you use. Emulators that are optimized for speed above all else will use programming hacks to make things run quicker at the expense of glitches or inaccurate emulation. VBA is an example of that. Emulators that are made for accuracy above all else require a lot more power, since it's pretty much recreating every piece of hardware. This will be more accurate, but if you don't have a powerful enough system, it'll seriously struggle. Just because a game platform is old does not mean it's easy to emulate. The N64 emulation scene is a great example of this. It's been 26 years and it's still nowhere near close to the same accuracy as the real thing. I love your content, but it's clear that you don't have any idea of what goes on in emulation.
