So, he went to all this trouble to counterfeit these wines. He bought the wax, ages the labels, mixed the wines. But he couldn’t take a few minutes to research the vineyards,which is actually the easiest part, and would have told him the years the wines were produced.

@Boertje247 4 жыл бұрын
Unenthusiastic Person , the Asian mkt I shop in has genuine wasabi, and is the same brand that I buy in Japan. Paying a premium is no guarantee, but knowing what I'm buying prevents rip offs. Ditto the "Italian" olive oil---I buy the most reasonable eco with no country designated. The evo's from California are very good, and much less than some "Italian" premium brands, and tastier. If you have a good Asian mkt that has fresh produce, you can often find fresh Japanese horseradish and make your own. You can also ell by the taste. Japanese wasabi is sharper, and subtly sweeter undertones. Regular horseradish is kind of a one-trick pony of just sharp heat with no subtlety. Hope that helps. Btw, I like regular wasabi too!

Most comments here saying "who cares if a bunch of douchebag trustfunders pissing away their money got scammed?" OK, good point, but remember that the vineyards are also victims of scammers like Rudy. Families like Ponsot put a lot of money and effort into making a product that stands out among thousands of competitors. They get screwed when somebody counterfeits their product - not only do they not receive the proceeds from the customer, but there's product on the market with their name on it that's crap because it's not the real thing. Just because you and I aren't terribly interested in wine and wouldn't pay a lot for it doesn't mean that it's okay to rip off somebody's product.

@@infiltr80r your argument is really dumb. Let's say that I born and live in US for my whole life even though my parents are ethnically Mexican, does that mean I'm a Mexican? No, I'm still an American. The same with Rudi, yes ethnically he's a Chinese but Indonesia is his nationality. Oh and fyi Indonesia government is quite racist and discriminate Chinese ethnicities in Indonesia. They even have law that forbid Chinese ethnicities to have their Chinese name and should use local name. That's why his name is Rudy Kurniawan, a really Indonesian sounding name because there's a law that forbid him to use his birth name. That law is abolished in 2004 if I'm not mistaken, but Chinese-Indonesian still use their Indonesian name to avoid trouble.

Ageing is what bumps up the price of a wine. I couldn't but an expert should be able to tell that a wine has taken up the vanillin from the wood of the cask, and that tartrates have precipitated out to smooth the flavour. A wide, flat bottomed caraffe, rather than a mixer, is often used to let the wine "breath".

Exactly what I was thinking. He could have made $50 bottles of wine by mixing $10 bottles. But I guess he wouldn't have been able to make a fortune out of it because marketing those wines would have been difficult and some "elite wine reviewer" would come and review it poorly and it would flop. There are people with his sort of magical palette and the reason they can't do that is that elitists have too much power and money to burn the business to the ground.
