Daniel, nice video. In fact all of your sailing videos are thoughtfully prepared! I first encountered your videos while researching Monty 15 and 17 sail boats. I am looking for something that's quick and easy to set up, launch and retrieve single handedly, and that fits in a standard 2 car garage. I like the Monty 15 but they are increasingly difficult to find. Thoughts? Suggestions? Also what made you move from the Monty 15 to the Scamp? Harold

Thank you for the kind words. I think the Monty 15 is a top notch boat. It really packs a punch for the size. It points well, and can take stiff winds. Very safe. Holds a line well. I just loved mine. You can definitely fit it in a garage, and tow it well. Now, my Monty and beefy trailer were around 1400 lbs, which was a bit of a handful in the driveway. Launching the boat and rigging myself, as well as single handing was no problem, but does take some time. But there are a few downsides for me. First, you cannot really beach the boat with the shoal keel, so, where I like to sail, bringing a boat right up onto the sand is really nice, and can’t be done with the Monty. The boat can heave to quite well, so reefing was easy, but there is no good way to change head sails in a blow. Had I kept the boat I think I would have gone to a jib furling system for reefing the jib. It is hard to go wrong with a Monty 15. Just a great boat. Now, the SCAMP is much lighter, so easier to handle in the driveway. The trailer and boat are around 800 lbs. The single sail is much easier to rig, and easier to single hand. The boat sails well, but does not point quite as well as my Monty. That may be my tuning, which I am working on. I can bring the boat right up onto the beach, and even launch from the beach. I can row the boat. And, I had a great journey building the boat. For my uses the SCAMP is just a better fit. And, since I built it, I can easily service and repair it.
