The Scandi style is super popular and has been for many years, however, it's interpreted differently in different parts of the world.
I'm going to show you 3 different - and very common - Scandinavian home decor styles, and architectural styles, that you will find in actual Scandinavian homes.

Loved the comment at the end about being vulnerable online and talking about being human. What maturity. Oh-and thanks for the look at real spaces and not just angles made for Instagram. Great explanation.

As a Scandinavian who consumes a lot of interior design content, it is so refreshing to see someone point out that there are more than just one Scandinavian style. I think as with most places it really depends on the persons personal style, if they have an interest in interior, what area / type of building they live in, their age, and financial situation. Great video.

yes those posters are popular in the US too... particularly in hipstery households who want to decorate similarly (minus the funkis kitchen of course)! I would most like to have the wood floors and kåkelugn from the first style and the cozy decor of the second, but Im usually in the all Ikea/ultra practical style... I lived in a 30s apartment in bromma for a few years and just loved it. It had pretty high ceilings, wood floors, lovely windows and white walls, the space was very cozy and bright even with my basic ikea furniture. Though I prefer more color in my bedding and curtains and such than most swedes!

Thank you for making this video! So many people have a misconception of what Scandinavian homes look like so it's good that someone sets it straight. You really nailed the urban styles. In the country side it can look a bit different, especially in all those wooden houses, but in cities that's very much it.

In reference to the flooring. I think what you are referring to is -engineered wood flooring, which looks identical to the hardwood on the surface, but instead of a solid wood plank, it's made of a plywood core with a thin layer of hardwood flooring on top. And parquet flooring is the term used to describe the geometric patterns made from multiple wooden panels. The word “parquet” is French for “a small compartment” and explains the use of decoratively laying wooden pieces in an intricate pattern. Parquet can be done with solid wood as well as engineered wood. Hope that helps!
@AlejandraCerda

Thank you so much for this explanation! The majority of the floors in newer apartments in Sweden have parquet floors. These parquet floors are not one solid piece of wood, but every wood piece is built in different layers - and they usually are not put in any special pattern, but placed straight in a linear pattern if you will. This is what is referred to in Sweden as parquet (or parkett in Swedish), so it's both the pattern and the technique. In older apartments from late 1800's to beginning of 1900's you'll see more hardwood floors, and these can sometimes be placed in a decorative patterns (but not always) - these floors are in Sweden referred to as hardwood floors or hardwood parquet (massiva trägolv or massiv parkett). I've only seen hardwood parquet in older fancy buildings that aren't homes, but maybe an old café etc, but I believe you can still find them in very expensive old apartments.

American over here! I really appreciate your perspective. Thank you for including historical context, I always find it interesting. And I can see how certain brands and influencers over here have interpreted these concepts. 🤦🏻‍♀I recently moved, am still decorating and am really into focusing on closed storage. American furniture that is vintage/antique is kind of bulky, heavy and often make a statement. I like the idea of choosing storage options that fades into the background. Love the video!

This was a great video. New subscriber here :) As a Canadian, I am always so inspired by Scandinavian style and have incorporated much of it into the design of my home. In North America we call that style of flooring "engineered hardwood", where the top layer is sandable hardwood and underneath is plywood. It's increasingly popular here as well.

Its so hard to find pics online of actual Scandinavian houses inhabited by normal people because its become such a buzzword! Which is annoying because they have some great details that you miss if you just see endless pictures of newly renovated rooms with nothing in them e.g.: marble (or granite or whatever) shelf mounted just under the windows even in social housing, metal 2 level hat / coat rack near the entry, pull out glass spice / grain drawers

Oooh to have well built appartments and big bathrooms for weelchairs in poorer areas of the city… Left political choices that contribute to help and not exclude, and last for the next generations. Feels good ( if only that was the norm) to hear it’s possible.
@AlejandraCerda
@AlejandraCerda 10 ай бұрын
Definitely! I hope it was as good as it sounds tho. I believe that when they built them they made them for the middle class, and they demolished lots of old (beautiful) buildings in Stockholm where poorer people lived, and after they were built they later became areas with higher criminality etc. But the bathroom size is definitely there, and I believe the majority of the buildings have elevators etc. Would love it to be the norm everywhere to create cheap and accessible homes for everyone.
