For an experienced diagnostician, a first instinct is usually a good idea as to where to start, but the goal must always be to let hard factual data / input be the final diagnostic end all. Process of diagnosing is part science, part instinct, and part experimentation. Read the plug and boot and replace accordingly.

Really enjoy your videos. I used to have a 2002 Chrysler T&C that developed a really bad multi-cylinder miss fire. It started as a single cylinder miss fire but after a particularly cold night it became many cylinders (almost all) miss firing. Turned out the wiring harness for the fuel injectors came loose from its support and fell down near the exhaust manifold and melted the insulation on the wires and they shorted together. It was a mess. I had to use a heat gun to separate the wires and then cut out the bad section (about 4 to 5 inches) one wire at a time rejoining them with butt splices and solder with heat shrink over them. After I got done with it the harness still reached to where it needed to plug in and was now too short to get too close to the exhaust. Car ran great after that. Apparently this was a fairly common problem.

Found idle miss fires on some ford 3.0 liter 4 valve engines to be burned exhaust valves, usually you can hear it while cranking but got fooled by that because it was so slightly burned and the misfire monitor was picking it up. Also found 4.6 liter engines with head gasket leaks into the cylinder and would miss when cold, took a while to find put the pressure tester on and let sit overnight pulled the plug and found slight amount of coolant on the center of plug.

22:45 Gas analyzers that include HC readings in the range necessary for this test are super expensive. However, gas analyzers that include CO readings in the range necessary for this test are super cheap. Here's what I'm thinking. Take the vehicle outside where there is plenty of ventilation and disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor to force the engine to run rich. And then do the test with a cheap $97 carbon monoxide tester. Sure beats spending $2000 to $3920 on a 5-gas analyzer that includes HC readings in the suitable range.
@ScannerDannerАй бұрын
The HC test is the most accurate, hands down. You can have a complete misfire from a head gasket failure and have no CO or CO2 in the cooling system. Why? You need combustion for those gasses.

To anyone dealing with these engines. The roller rockers failing is caused by the oil galley plugs on front of cylinder head (under the cam phasers). There are 2 plugs that look like bolts right directly undert the cams. Those plugs loosen up and the oil pressure that is supposed to be supplying the head is bleeding off. I pull the plugs out and clean it all up and use red locktite. They could also just be tightened but every single one of these iv messed with those oil galley plugs have been loose.

why would it be any different than any other car?
@LAW-fv6ys3 жыл бұрын
Fsi tsi and tfsi are difficult apparently to fix, I've just bought a 2.0fsi golf 2005 as spares and repairs. Misfire at idle and kangaroo engine cut under load above 3k rpm when hot hot not just normal temp ie 1hr drive hard and sit in layby for 10 mins to heat soak it and then it would misfire under load. The fixes breather pipe for idle misfire was easy find. Egt temp sensor showing reading for temp comparible to the model temp, but was fault coding p1453 open circuit replaced and then p0191 fuel pressure sensor implausible signal turns out the low pressure fuel pump was lazy, logged high and low pressure fuel and saw low pressure not recovering very well under load hoovering at 3bar, repalcement pump runs over 5bar. Why you might think only when hot hot, sitting in the layby meant the return fuel going back to tank would heat it up this made the lazy fuel pump run even weaker, once I accelerated out of the layby the fuel trims went positive and o2 lean and to protect the engine it would hard cut the injection and shut the dbw throttle (3k above limp mode active) Also egr wouldn't activate with the egt sensor code pending or present, another precaution to protect from potentially high temps and lean conditions. But didn't flag any egr codes at all. So this was a great learning curve for me. Vagcom vcds is great and a must for VAG cars in the UK. Im looking to get the maxicom mk808bt soon with oscilloscope and bore scope. Any other tablet obd11 bluetooth recommended guys?

Late to this. When you had your amp clamp + snap-on scope hooked up, the scope was set for trigger. I don't believe you would have been able to see a lack of coil control, had that been the issue. I don't think there would have been any gap in the waveform when zooming and scrolling back. If you had used a second channel for firing order reference, do you think perhaps the ringing (oscillations) in the waveform, or lack thereof could have been useful in narrowing the problem to an ignition issue quicker? Perhaps being able to compare the current waveforms when you know the specific problematic cylinder to the rest of the known good cylinders would have been beneficial? @@donwasse7892 this is an auto trigger, so I'd still see it live, but primarily I'm using the buffer to be able to see it when I feel it. Pause, freeze, then zoom out and you'll see it, regardless of trigger setting. Why? Because I can go back in time and view everything, even if a manual trigger was set, I'd still see it. Hope that makes sense

@@ScannerDanner I use the snap-on Verus scope at work. I was not aware when in auto trigger the buffer would show only time instead of trigger+sweep, allowing a person to see a gap. In a automotive oscilloscope class I attended, it was taught to never use a trigger if you're looking for a missing coil/injector event, as the oscilloscope would not show data unless the voltage reached the threshold of the trigger. Thank you for your responses, I bought your book from AESWave a few years ago, great book.

@@donwasse7892 thank you so much! Yeah, that's actually not true at all! The buffer records everything regardless of the trigger on all of the snap on scopes and the pico! Now when you are "live" you can absolutely miss it, but not in the buffer

@@ScannerDanner can you give me your service, when will be the best day to go to your place, I'm located in Bergenfield NJ 07621 if you take me I can go there to get my car Services. I put in the car , New Battery, Spark plug mostly everything new but Still is doing a misfire similar a what you show in the video, you're feeling as if the car cut the power off or a injector stop to send the signal, if you give a little gar RPM over 100, car working smooth, let me know if you take the hot potato

Typically they'll be one technician in a shop with enough passion for the automobile to endure this level of aggravation and is piled on by management while the gravy suckers toil mindlessly away.
