Paul, you dropped a gem there about not selling time upfront. Diagnostic pricing is one of the hardest things to explain to a customer, especially as an independent mobile technician. I wish I could get folks to understand that $100 spent on honest and accurate diagnostics can save you THOUSANDS of $$, and just as many tears. It's like they say: "You pay me for what I know, not what I do." Great stuff as always my man! Blessings and much love to you

I've found that most folks like us that are or have been in the trade enjoy puzzles - crossword, jumbo, sudoku etc. We love the mental challenge and, as ScannerDanner notes, the search for an answer - the true root cause. Fixing the issue then becomes less exciting, at least for me. Just my 2-cents.

Thanks @ScannerDanner for what you do. The fact that you get to work with your son is priceless. My Dad was a lifelong mechanic, but it wasn't until he passed 11 years ago that I really got into working on cars, (out of necessity initially, if I'm honest). After hundreds of hours trying to learn and hundreds of mistakes made, I can now say that nothing, (workwise), gives me greater pleasure than properly diagnosing/fixing a vehicle problem. Great work on the camera & editing too Caleb. I appreciate you both.

IMO You,Eric O,PHAD,ETCG and Advanced level diagnostics are the ones I've learned so much from. Paul I consider you to be the Bob Ross of auto repair and diagnostics, especially when it comes to all the electronics and computer components found in autos today. Do you have an engineering degree? If so you could be the one to properly engineer and design autos. Caleb you seem to be an ace at camera/video work, are you a cinematographer? That no start (crank or no crank) scenario, in the middle of nowhere, without many tools, is my favorite problem. Every one of us will encounter that at some point, and you get to be a team hero if you can sort it out without calling for a tow. It calls to mind what tools are worth carrying in the trunk. Test light, a few wrenches, screwdriver, perhaps a cheap multimeter?

Unless it's the brake light bulb gone out on a 2019 Tacoma out in the woods. Casey LaDelle dragged one out of the Oregon mountains, he even had a code reader which showed a brake switch open code. Owner thought it was his "smart" key, but back at home, spare didn't work, so off to dropoff at the Toyota dealership where the guy worked. Next morning, the mechanic changed the bulb, fired right up. Nice, crappy, and dangerous for a truck sold to go out in the woods design. Hard to get wiring diagrams when you have to hike a mile up the mountain, just to get a call out for a tow.

I have learned from past experience always always check ground first and specially if it’s an east coast car that is rusty rotted I have fixed so many cars and troubles with checking battery ground and chassis grounds Lots of improvement on many different systems It’s always one of the first thing i check and it effects even the computer proper operation I think it also effects reference voltage and every other component and system Another thing i always do is to solder the crimped end Even if it’s ok now with age and time it can corrode the strands to the terminal and if it’s soldered it can not creat a voltage drop in the future and just imagine trying to find this voltage drop where you just can’t locate it Even if everything is ok and the ground looks perfect You can’t see the connection and I would clean it and have fixed problems that would never be found

Anything over 2013/14 a good battery and connections is vital just to begin a diagnosis. As an example, today's alternators are computer controlled & all sorts of codes & symptoms , not just the alternator will show up with vehicle that has even a marginal battery. Seeming alternator trouble/ codes along with random ones may very well be the tell that a battery may start the vehicle but is marginal & will start causing all sorts of random codes .

I've seen that exact problem on a 6.0 before. I probably would have just got my test light. Easy to diagnose the no spark, test power, test ground, test coil control (Chapter 22, page 8 I believe), and see injector pulse with it, but your way worked too. I know AFR heaters are PWM, but I didn't know traditional O2's could be. Thanks for all you do and everything you've taught me. I made more diagnosing and fixing cars last year than I did at my 8-5 job. I diagnosed a PT Cruiser with No Cooling Fan Control and No-Com with certain scan tools like a boss Saturday. I put a video up on it. No way I could have done that 3 years ago.

NICE! I was thinking bad ground in the beginning, just because of the corrosion you guys get, but, that's not 100% all the time.

So far Ive only watched upto where the truck broke down and went dead. My first clue is when it began spitting and sputtering, it never backfired. Ergo whatever the problem turns out to be; its something that shuts down the fuel combustion..ignition? Anyway, looking forward to watching the rest of the vid. Even tho you did hear a fuel pump prime. As the problem manifests, as you said, its a complete system shut down. Edit: Very fascinating case study. Ive always remembered when I first began wrenching back in the 80's, self taught, that 90% of all electrical problems were bad ground issues. Just FYI, i did graduate from the John Wayne - Robert Conrad's school of hard knocks Auto Training. Nice Vid!
