Paul, you dropped a gem there about not selling time upfront. Diagnostic pricing is one of the hardest things to explain to a customer, especially as an independent mobile technician. I wish I could get folks to understand that $100 spent on honest and accurate diagnostics can save you THOUSANDS of $$, and just as many tears. It's like they say: "You pay me for what I know, not what I do." Great stuff as always my man! Blessings and much love to you

I've found that most folks like us that are or have been in the trade enjoy puzzles - crossword, jumbo, sudoku etc. We love the mental challenge and, as ScannerDanner notes, the search for an answer - the true root cause. Fixing the issue then becomes less exciting, at least for me. Just my 2-cents.

Thanks @ScannerDanner for what you do. The fact that you get to work with your son is priceless. My Dad was a lifelong mechanic, but it wasn't until he passed 11 years ago that I really got into working on cars, (out of necessity initially, if I'm honest). After hundreds of hours trying to learn and hundreds of mistakes made, I can now say that nothing, (workwise), gives me greater pleasure than properly diagnosing/fixing a vehicle problem. Great work on the camera & editing too Caleb. I appreciate you both.

With all the new technology in automobiles today, you simply can't stop learning and I make it my duty to learn new things all the time. IMO You,Eric O,PHAD,ETCG and Advanced level diagnostics are the ones I've learned so much from. Paul I consider you to be the Bob Ross of auto repair and diagnostics, especially when it comes to all the electronics and computer components found in autos today. Do you have an engineering degree? If so you could be the one to properly engineer and design autos. Caleb you seem to be an ace at camera/video work, are you a cinematographer? Caleb, your feelings about being a father must do you proud. I regret not being a father and now am I realizing it. Anyway guys have a gr8 God blessed day😄🙏👍💯.

That no start (crank or no crank) scenario, in the middle of nowhere, without many tools, is my favorite problem. Every one of us will encounter that at some point, and you get to be a team hero if you can sort it out without calling for a tow. It calls to mind what tools are worth carrying in the trunk. Test light, a few wrenches, screwdriver, perhaps a cheap multimeter?

Unless it's the brake light bulb gone out on a 2019 Tacoma out in the woods. Casey LaDelle dragged one out of the Oregon mountains, he even had a code reader which showed a brake switch open code. Owner thought it was his "smart" key, but back at home, spare didn't work, so off to dropoff at the Toyota dealership where the guy worked. Next morning, the mechanic changed the bulb, fired right up. Nice, crappy, and dangerous for a truck sold to go out in the woods design. Hard to get wiring diagrams when you have to hike a mile up the mountain, just to get a call out for a tow.

@@jkbrown5496 Interesting to hear you say that. My Subaru does the same thing if the fuse to brake lights blows. There is a work around where one can release the transmission lock and still drive, but without inside knowledge, an amateur driver is hooped.

I really liked this one. It reminded me of one I had with my grandparents 98 Ram a few years ago. It was an intermittent problem that sounded like a grinding noise in the transmission. After messing with it for a while I took it to a friend of a friend who does mostly Dodge transmissions. He couldn't get it to act up so I filled the tank and had one of his mechanics put a recorder on it and drive it back and forth to work and lunch for a week. The fourth day it lost the ground for the torque convertor lockup and started grinding. They replaced the ground and convertor then upped the pressure a little bit. It hasn't happened in the 5 years since.

Had a very similar issue on a buddies truck. his was a 03 2500 with the 6.0. it started to shut off on him and left him stranded a few times. the engine had some work done to it, (cam, heads, pistons) was supposed to be a hot rod. We did almost the same exact diag as you did. We noticed that the rpms would not move on the tach (not sure if chevy does that but my fords do) we checked for fuel pressure because he thought the pump was bad but we had good fuel pressure, checked for spark and had no spark, using the vantage pro we tested for crank sensor signal and had none. He was soooo happy when we finally got that running. it was a real headscratcher that's for sure. no codes and it was interment it took us most of the night in the shop cranking on it until it finally coughed up and started to not start.

Hey Paul great case study. Over time, I have come to think, " the customer knows what's wrong, I just haven't asked the right question yet."

Preach it brother. I'm a family lawyer. Why should you pay me less for solving your case in a week as opposed to two years later. I charge flat fees so not only are you getting results, you're getting them quicker and you don't have a lawyer that sucks you dry hourly.

Also the case study u did on the kia Forte with the plugged cat helped me diagnose my wife's 2012 hyundai veloster in the parking lot of her job 30 min from home plugged cat no codes starts and idles but falls on its face when u give it gas pulled the upstream o2 out she sang like a banshee she made it home like that... then I got to change her manifold in the street in the dead of winter that was fun... anyway super grateful for your content looking forward to the next one
