Paul, A great video on "a day in the life of Rosedale". It is very exciting to see students learning and figuring things out with your guidance. I applaud your teaching style where you lead the students to the solutions - you just don't give them the answers. This restores my faith in the industry knowing that the output from your classes will be knowledgeable and thinking technicians! A couple of observations. There seems to be no consistency in manufacturer protocols for scan tools (Ford - no injector balance capability), or wiring diagram consistency. My experience is that the customer drives the manufacturer's products. I would think that folks like yourself and schools like Rosedale might have some influence on manufacturer's to drive consistency in these areas. An injector balance test and an accurate and easy to follow wiring diagram will certainly result in fewer hours of troubleshooting. This ultimately makes a happy customer with a lower repair bill. Keep up the great work and my hats of to your students who were brave enough to appear on camera. Gene C.

At 51:00 you mentioned the connector I was talking about and I missed it: Anyway, I'll leave this up if anybody need to know. When you're talking about the GM Fuel pressure drop test on a 3100 and had to backprobe the ECM to fire the injectors. You don't have to do that. All 3100 engines I've seen had all the injectors on a single connector that is easy to unplug. It comes out from under the upper intake near the power steering pump and has over 12 wires on it. It's got the MAP, IAC,TPS and other things on that connector. It is usually on a bracket with another connector between the alternator and coil packs. Check wiring diagrams to find the right wires to use. The other connector is for the coils if I remember right. Since you don't need the motor running you can unplug it to do the tests. Plug it back up if you need to start it. KZbin won't let me paste a link, but image search for GM 3.1L fuel rail and you'll find a picture in the results somewhere with the upper intake removed and the harness and connector visible in the upper left side of the photo I'm pretty sure the 2.8 3.4 and 3.8 have a similar connector, but don't quote me on those.

I have been watching your vids and trying to learn to be and become better at diagnosing car suv problems. I think I'm grasping what I am seeing. For example, in looking up diagram for my vehicle fuses in rear passenger side compartment. Has three individual rows of fuses numbered 1 -- 12 . What came to me was that the amp fuse indicated to me in my interpretation of looking at diagram, is in my example #5 - 80 amp glow time control unit 2 is J703 3) 5) 6) 10) 60 amp 13) 15) relay for 3rd heating stage is J959 correlates to functioning in conjunction with the ECU controller J623 and 2 J624 3) 5) 6) 10) to the thermostat throttle valve for both low / high heating output relay J338 ; J359 and J360 these have interaction to some degree. I have not gotten into any of the diagrams you show within your videos or class videos I have seen. My vehicle issues are mostly low power of sorts low voltage condition to supply voltage B+ condition to implausible signal condition to no signal/ communication condition to short to ground condition to being an open circuit condition. So what I am to look for would it be the 5V reference? Say I have output voltage power to activate Terminal 15 but I am seeing only 0.288V right. Now my output voltage power to activate Terminal 50 which I am seeing no voltage 0.000V what should I be looking at there to determine why terminal 50 has no voltage at all?

On the chevy, you should take a sample and do an "ethanol test" which is simply putting equal amounts of fuel and water in a clear container. Shake it up and see if the level stays in the same place, the water and alcohol will mix. thereby showing alcohol content. EDIT: FORD cheat-unplug one coil as you watch primary current ramps , there is your sync. then the firing order betrays the cylinder failure.

I know at times I sound like an unreasonable A@#, but I had one year of Master’s degree under my belt to become an automotive technology instructor from San Diego State. However, at that time no teaching jobs were available in California. So I worked in a Toyota dealership as Tune up technician and eventually became an assistant manager in the service department. I know more than you care to know. My being finicky has roots to teach proper procedures to newcomers to the automotive repair field. Thus, making sure that repairs are done right WITHOUT any damage to the customer’s car. Thank you for taking my comments not as criticism, but helpful hint and or reminders. I just took a few moments from watching the third video of A/C repairs on your 95 Jeep to type this. Well done on A/C repairs.

I would certainly bypass the PNP switch assembly only because I like to raise eyebrows. Yeah, a 7mm universal socket(shallow) an extension and a 1/4dr air ratchet make removing ign. coils from these Fords a lot easier and quicker. As long as your students sink these basic fundamentals into their head, they will be just fine.

Hey Paul, the part of the PDC box the students where trying to remove wouldn't come out? Isn't it possible to unbolt the entire PDC box and look at the wires from the bottom of the box? If it's not a huge waste of time. I'm probably going to have to do this on a vehicle I'm diagnosing excessive 5A battery draw (presumably constant but tapers during readings)

You'd be surprised at how common that is. You'd be lucky to get 1-2 students in a class that will actively engage themselves in a task. Part of it is fear, part of it is unfamiliarity, and part of it is laziness. Students with less experience/class time tend to suffer from it more versus students who have taken several classes and/or do this sort of thing on their own or for work. It's sad; I hate seeing people waste good money passing up a wonderful opportunity.

My focus is to pour as much information into these very eager students, not police irrelevant things like "proper eating and drinking". My students are not spoiled and this is very good class and I am proud of each of them.
