Pretty cool movie with a bit of a wacky idea regarding mind control. Immediately I thought of the classic "Village Of The Damned" (1960), where a group of children have a telepathic power that enables them to communicate with each other, and make people do things that the children want them to do. The unborn babies becoming scanners is very similar to "Village..." where all the new born children have this psychic power. Nice choice Jen!

I've loved this movie since I saw it at the theater when it came out. I even won a Scanners T-shirt from Fangoria magazine at the time. It was my second Cronenberg film, having already seen "They Came From Within" ("Shivers") when it came out. One of Cronenberg's main achievements in "Scanners" was managing to give the illusion that Jennifer O'Neill could act. His two other greatest films in my opinion are "The Fly" and "The Dead Zone." The artworks that you admired in the art studio scene were done by Stephen Lack, the actor who played Cameron Vale. Cronenberg was unhappy with the original special effects in the finale, so he managed to get makeup effects master Dick Smith ("The Exorcist", "Little Big Man") to come in and make them better, which is why Smith gets a special "consultant" credit. The music is by Howard Shore, who would go on to score "Lord of the Rings", "Se7en", "The Fly", and many more.

Jennifer O'Neall couldn't act? I'm not saying she's exactly the best actor ever, but having worked with Howard Hawks, Robert Mulligan, Lucino Visconti... makes me think that she could act. Besides, acting in movies doesn't require precise skills needed in, for instance, theatre, and she had other elements very useful, like a great presence and eyes, eyes in movies are the best tool for an actor

True, but a bit of an undersell. Dick Smith is often called "the Godfather of makeup" because he pioneered the development of prosthetic makeup appliances and effects, and his work on films like "The Exorcist", "Altered States", and "Scanners" (along with many other films) were groundbreaking, and he won a well-deserved Academy Award for his work on "Amadeus" in 1985. It bears mentioning that he was the mentor to another brilliant (and now retired) makeup FX artist, Rick Baker, who went on to win seven Academy Awards over the course of his career.

Quite a few things bear mentioning. The inflatable polyvinyl appliances in Scanners allowed not only vein expansion but the color of the blood being visible through the translucent skin. Foam latex is flexible but much too opaque.

Her best well known role was in the 1971 film, Summer of 42; where she played a wife during WWII awaiting news of her soldier husband while befriending the boy next door. If people haven't told you yet, Patrick McGoohan was Number 6 in The Prisoner BBC series; an implied follow up to his earlier show, Danger Man. Many younger fans might know him also from the film Braveheart; as King Edward I. Scanners did have a few sequels; none directed by Cronenberg and none even close to the style and intensity of this one. Still a long time favorite of mine.

In 1922, the German film DR MABUSE have a 'criminal mastermind' that could have his 'self' escape his body and occupy someone else's, do criminal acts or whatever, then leave that subject's body and return to his own. In 1933, the superior film TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE was made and still offered much of these powers. There are later films and they seem bland and tame in comparison to the first two. Of course, the original Phantom Of The Opera was a real murderer, a vicious mass killer, too.

You're watching SCANNERS? *CLICKS IMMEDIATELY* Saw this when it came out at the theaters with my dad at the age of 10. With its shades of spy-thrillers, superhero comics like "The Uncanny X-Men", and a twist on the horrifying real-world thalidomide scandal that erupted in the 1960's, it's absolutely my favorite Cronenberg flick, bar-none. Top notch, from start to finish IMHO, with Cronenberg's writing and direction, the makeup FX of the legendary Dick Smith, and the scoring of Howard Shore (who would find fame and win 3 academy awards for his work on the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy), and a superb, villainous performance from Michael Ironside, all combine to make a real winner. The only questionable portion of the film is the flat performance of the lead, Stephen Lack, who some have suggested was hired because of his piercing, blue eyes. However, I think the performance works because Cameron Vale is detached from humanity, and is only starting to understand how to live in the world and around other human beings, now that he has the ephemerol to manage the worst side-effects of his telepathic powers. Furthermore, when you look at this film today and regard it from the lens of neurodivergence, that adds yet another layer to Vale's plight and mannerisms. That said, I can understand why others weren't impressed by him. By the way, the phrase "kept on ice" was not literal. He was not frozen cryogenically or anything. Revok meant that Ruth just let Vale live the life of a struggling, maladjusted vagrant, under a certain level of surveillance, until he had need of him. Pretty ruthless, no?

Looking at this again after The Boys are now a thing the plots to both are pretty similar . Not sure if that's intentional . But yeah , This is a sci fi classic .

I wonder how much Cronenberg based the Ephemerol drug on the real world Thalidomide/Contergan/Neurosedyn disaster which prompted many countries to introduce tougher rules for the testing and licensing of drugs (even though antivaxxers always brings up Thalidomide as example for why they distrust the FDA despite the fact that the FDA was the reason Thalidomide was never allowed in the US).
@corvus19703 жыл бұрын
I'd say the thalidomide scandal was the key influence on the ephemerol portion of the script.

Thanks for another great reaction video, Jen! You still have a lot of Canadian horror films to get to, and it's only patriotic to watch as many as you can. lol 😆 Cronenberg's second film, Rabid, Prom Night and Terror Train with Jamie Lee Curtis, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Birthday To Me, and Cronenberg's Videodrome, which is the trippiest film he ever did.

A great watch just to see what Michael Ironside looked like with hair or see him make it through an entire movie without losing a limb. I originally saw this on the Space Channel in the late 90s. It was only a few years ago when I rediscovered it did I found out that Michael Ironside is actually Canadian.
