There weren't many Meteors made - I think around 20. The mold was cut up to make a 60 or 63 foot Scarib. Original Meteors had three 420 HP motors and could get up to a bit over 50 MPH. The previous owner, a former Miami Dolphins player, took the boat down to its hull and completely redid the entire boat - engines, drives, rigging, interior, paint, everything. I bought the boat from him over 10 years ago and have rebuilt or replaced every motor, every drive, every header and have a spare motor just in case.

For 640” those look like small carbs. I’m assuming it’s to control some of the GPH even though that’s already out the window. Beautiful boat👌🏻🤙🏼
@TheRushjunkys
@TheRushjunkys 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The carbs are Holley 1050 Dominators. I think what you are seeing as small are the air cleaners / spark arrestors. You don't have much dirt inside the engine compartment so the main job of the arrestor is to prevent an explosion in case of a backfire. Fires + Boats = Bad
@TyphoonVstrom

And remember, marine engines don't turn huge rpms- they are endurance engines. So they only have to feed 640" at 5-5500 rpm.

@TheRushjunkys
@TheRushjunkys 6 жыл бұрын
There are turn key boats you can buy today that will do close to 200MPH. They make my boat look slow and cheap. But when you can carry 10 people, have a stand-up shower, toilet, refrigerator, A/C, sleeping bed, two couches, generator and everything else, it is a different deal. Docking is nerve racking. A 50 foot boot with 3 engines that don't idle that well in a cross breeze, no bow thrusters and I have to make three 90 degree turns with little room for error to get out of the marina. It's not like driving a car.

Dam trips would make fuel a major issue, two is bad enough. When you swap to gallons per mile shit gets serious.
@TheRushjunkys
@TheRushjunkys 6 жыл бұрын
At 60MPH, you burn about 1 gallon per minute. While that sounds like a lot, most places you go are 1/2 hour or so away. When you figure the costs for the marina, storage, winterizing and repairs, the gas is a small expense. You put one small scratch in the fiberglass, and it is a grand to repair. I put new water jacketed stainless steel headers on all three motors. For one motor, a header costs close to $10K. I wish fuel were the only expense.

I love old wooden boats too. Gotten close to buying an old Chris Craft and made an offer on a Dart. I have thought it might be nice to have a smaller boat for the times when something is broken on this. The boat has somewhat outlived it usefulness for me. When I got it, the kids were young and it was a great weekend activity. Now they are older and have jobs and significant others. Now I have to find friends that want to go out and actually know how to help with the docking.

I don't know what year this boat is, but it feels very mid-late 90s by color scheme. Those bright, in your face, obnoxious color schemes were just how it was done in that era. I grew up around boats in 90s, and NOTHING was understated back then.

Umm - three oil pressure gauges - one for each motor. Also, three tachometers, three voltmeters, three oil temperatures, three water temperatures, three water pressure, three fuel pressures and various other gauges. You learn to scan the gauges for any that are reporting something strange. You don't have time to stare at them when you are cruising

@TheRushjunkys
@TheRushjunkys 6 жыл бұрын
All the engines have been rebuilt and I have a spare engine just in case. I also rebuilt all the drives and built new stainless steel headers when the old ones started wearing out. Once everything was done, the boat was reliable. You generally don't want to push the boat to its limit though because that's when stuff starts breaking. The boat cruises happily at 60 MPH around 4,000 RPM.

And very few of them give a shit about the less fortunate in our country.

Maxine Goodhew He can cruise at 35-40mph.....just because it goes fast doesn’t mean you have to all the time. We have a 37 Chaparral now with twin 385hp Volvo’s max speed 42 mph cruises at 25-30 mph and it gets WORSE miles per gallon an hour than our previous 36 Baja Outlaw did with twin 500hp. That boat did 70mph and easily cruised at 40mph more efficiently.
@TheRushjunkys
@TheRushjunkys 6 жыл бұрын
The boat gets up on plane around 35 MPH. You don't really want to go that slow though because you are plowing through the water. Then engines are happy at 50-60 MPH though I have pushed it much higher at times. At 4000 RPM, the engines will last forever assuming you don't have bad gas or something. When you start pushing the motors near their limit, their lifespan drops like a rock. I am not out to win any races. Just go out on a nice day, see some nice scenery, listen to the motors, be with some friends, have lunch on the water and be back before dinner.

whoever told you that your motors were producing 750HP was a liar. Not a chance
@TheRushjunkys
@TheRushjunkys 5 жыл бұрын
You don't know much about motors. Making 750HP from a 640 cubic inch motor isn't that hard. I have a 650 CI car motor made in 2001 that measured 850HP on the dynamometer. With boat motors it is a bit harder because motors are under constant load so you have to make them tougher. Around the same time, I saw a Porsche 3.4 liter (200 cubic inch) motor built making 670 HP on 2 Bar of boost (saw it on the engine dyno) - $70K motor back in the day. Car is still around today running great.

You clearly know nothing about moving these narrow deep V hulls around. The drives are so close together that opposite gear doesn't spin them well at all. Add in coarse pitch props and cranky engines, steering with the props is your friend. It's the only thing they respond to.
