My mates and I used to cruise from Freo on a Saturday Arvo to get a feed at that burger shop . Then we would hang around to listen to Live band and grab a beer at the Scarborough hotel . If it was a bit quiet there we would head on back to the OBH . Always good music and lots of lovelies there . THOSE were definately good times . Thanks for the memories .

I moved to Perth in 88 and at that time Perth was similar to this with plenty of uncluttered space, very few people around, it felt like a country town really, it was beautiful and a great place to live. I moved away in 1999 to Melbourne, I didn't want to leave but had to due to employment and family. I have been back since to visit a relative but I have to say it is no longer the place I moved to in 88. I would not go back now but I do have fond memories of my time there.

In the 60's I used to spend hours in Gay Gordan's playing the pinball machine with my friend. It was called Pirate Cove. It was a four player machine and we would team up to rack up the replays. Back then it was sixpence for one game and a shilling for three games. We never spent more than a shilling. The destruction of Scarborough commenced with the closure of the Snake Pit in '62. The 3 to 4 metre surf has disappeared along with Trigg's Island. Lifesavers are now the Americanised lifeguards and Surf carnivals are a fading memory.

I grew up in filburn St n cen of Manning st. Who remembers the drags and the sunday sessions. I was a kid but what a blast...especially when the bikers rolled in along West coast hwy and the beauty pageants on the beach...how blessed was I to grow up in such a 'coloueful' environment?😋
@every16653 жыл бұрын
@@faithsheehan2544 I've heard a story that the bikies took it upon themselves to handle any trouble makers. They didn't want the cops hanging around, so instead of having to hire security (which probably wasn't even done back then) the owner was quite happy to let the bikies act as bouncers. As a result, if you behaved you were quite safe. I'd say from the amount of broken glass and blood I've seen on Sunday mornings now, that's no longer the case.
@faithsheehan25443 жыл бұрын
@@every1665 oh yeh...they were a presence. The closest cop shop was on Scarborough BCH Rd and was scantily manned. Shit did break out (often with the surfies travelling up n down the coast) and what the bikes didn't start they certainly finished. I can remember coming home from beachfront one day and a Bikie dragged me onto his bike and escorted me safely access hwy as a brawl broke out. I'd make a fortune on a Sunday session collecting coke empty coke bottles off them and trading them in down at local pin ball parlours......I always seen them as the 'good guys'

It was far better in the 60's. The rot set in when the lower carpark was built in '64. Surf was far better with 4 metre waves. The sand bar is no longer there for good surf and Luna Park was replaced by a Shopping Centre in the early 70's.

@@kenchristie9214 still get monster waves. I've been sucked into a few enormous ones, so scared I wouldn't come out alive. I'm not a surfer, just a chick but used to swim out where the surfers were, roll up over the big waves. Mistimed it on more than one occasion and got sucked right down into the dark cave like recess. I was churned around violently like I was in a washing machine, my head hit a surfer's head lol we both survived but jesus christ, I don't go out there anymore when the swell is up. They. didn't get 'Peters by the Sea'. Snakepit also one time 'Taco Mexicana" among many other reincarnations. And my second home just over the road...The Scarborough Hotel. Man, Scabs has changed sooo much. How long does it take for someone with aesthetics, landscaping skills and creativity to come along. The early 80's was when 'bland' finally gave way to "hey, we can tart this up and make money here !" Then Snobservation City was built. The Scarborough Drags on a saturday night. Pinnies, table soccer and pool. I even went to a few parties in the flats at the back of the shops,they were like flea and rat infested crack houses back then. Ahhh, halcyon days.

Funny story about that bombing.I knew some girls who were ex girlfriends of some SAS guys.They said about a week before the bombing some SAS guys just decided to do some informal "training" and climb the construction site late at night/early morning. It was unsanctioned and therefore illegal. After it was bombed they shat themselves thinking that if anyone had seen them then they might have some explaining to do. And be in deep shit.
