Scarborough to Leeds Driver's Eye View

Part 2: • Leeds to Liverpool Lim...
Although the speeds in this video have been checked for accuracy, they are for guidance only and drivers should always use official documentation to ensure they are aware of all line speeds.
Part 1 of this Driver's Eye View/route learning video takes us from Scarborough to Leeds on a service to Liverpool Lime Street. The train is formed of a 3 car Class 185 DMU.

Prior to migrating to Australia in '85, I would never have thought the UK would see Diesel Hydaulics return (let alone as DMU's). I was shocked when I first saw the sheer acceleration of a 180 on KZbin, and after the apparent troubles experienced with the Adelantes, I thought I would never see another KZbin video like that again. I can't recall the gradient profile from Scarborough - York, but that 185 accelerates like it's on perfectly flat terrain. Absolutely amazing stuff! Thanks heaps for the video.

Very nice video, I like the information you've added about speed limits, crossings, etc. The differences in current horn use between the UK vs. the US are interesting to me, so I'm curious: what was different about the level crossing at Knapton (~15:20) that made you decide to use the horn vs. the previous level crossings?

The differences between countries when it comes to rail rules and practices interests me. I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a blanket rule about sounding a warning before level crossings in England and Wales, but there definitely is in Australia; a warning has to be sounded when approaching a crossing and a second time just before reaching the crossing, making two warnings per crossing. Also, Australia doesn't seem to have any of those points/switches/turnouts warning lights on the signals. I guess the driver is expected to just know where they're supposed to be going (although that doesn't always work out; I've heard of one case of the Ballarat train being halfway to Geelong before anyone noticed it was on the wrong track, and for reference, Ballarat is West and Geelong is South)

Thank you for great videos, with good information. Why are both tones of the horn used at the Whistle signs on this run? (I understood from Don Coffey that only the low tone is normally used.)

Thanks for your comment. We are advised by our union (ASLEF) to use both tones for the safety of those using the crossing. Don is one of the drivers who chooses not to take their advice.

Wonderful video :) May I have two questions please? 1- who gives train engineman authority to depart form the certain station in UK? In Croatia we have signalmen at the stations but here I don't see none... 2-do your stations in general have entrance and exit station signals like here or not? Sorry to bother :))

Signalboxes clear the relevant signals to allow trains to depart and the guard on the train tells the driver to proceed. Most stations will have signals before and after, sometimes the distance will be less close to the station than busy areas

Hi and Great video. I work nights and come home and chill out before going to bed, then saw this and had to watch it right through. I have a few questions. 1, yellow triangle with 15 and your on a 60, then you see a 60 again, but then later a 15 (how do you know which to take notice off)? 2, what are the white lights over a signal in a kind of strip? 3, York. you change speed from 15 to 30 but I kept rewinding but couldn't see a sign? 4, Level crossings, so signs were just after the crossing? one was just in front of the crossing (you were doing 75), Others seemed to be in the middle of know where?. 5, Now and again on the right on the floor were two red lights? Hiya, 1. Inverted yellow triangles are to warn drivers of upcoming speed restrictions. They're placed at braking distance from the restriction for the heaviest train which can use the route. 2. Junction indicators - they tell us which route the train is to take ahead 3. There is no sign. The speed of the main line from Edinburgh (which joins on the right) is 30mph and this speed applies once we join it from the Scarborough line. 4. I don't know which signs you mean 5. Ground position or limit of shunt signals - Ground position signals are there to allow trains to make shunt moves to move from one line to another. Limit of shunt means stop.

Most of the the whistle signs I think relate to upcoming foot crossings, so if they are just after a level crossing this might just be coincidence - there is another foot crossing coming up after?

Only Mk5s and class 68s are planned to run on the Scarborough route and they will have to stick to the lower speeds.

There was someone waiting to cross. It's quite normal for user worked crossings to be used in this way.

Crossing from Up to Down at Malton is 20, but then you show 40 along platform without any signs before dropping to 15 for crossing back to Up line. Has a 40 sign gone missing?

Signs aren't always provided. I don't think it would have been deemed necessary for a sign there since the only main route from the following signal is via the 15mph points, so the likelihood of getting to anywhere near 40mph is zero.

Does the 185 get to follow the sprinter limits? Also its not quite true that we don't use km/h in the UK - Ashford International is signed in both km/h and mph, maybe also the CTRL approaches to St Pancras, and I believe the shared parts of the Tyne Metro are also in both.

No. 185s are restricted to the lower speeds. Kmh is not used on the wider national rail network. You are right that it is used in very few isolated areas but even new ETCS installations use MPH

The yellow figure? You mean the speed limit in the upside-down triangle? It's basically for trains using a different line and switching onto said different line, as it's typically a slower approach due to the possibility of a derailment. And the station is Malton.

Whistle boards are normally for foot crossings. User Worked Crossings require the user to get permission to cross from the signaller, so there shouldn't be a train approaching when people are using them.

Can anyone explain why Malton has one platform and is a bottleneck? The track layout was much larger in the past, but was the station always single platform? How much does it cost to build a platform and a bridge?

It used to have an island platform as well, but no footbridge - a gangway was laid across the gap between the platforms between trains, quite primitive. The current solution is... cheap!

Upcoming speed restriction of 20mph. These signs are known as Morpeth Boards, as I believe they were introduced as a result of incidents at the infamous curve at Morpeth on the east coast mainline.

I did a bit of research after you posted this - Apparently Malton used to be a significantly larger station and did have two through platforms, however only one could be used at any one time anyway - the method of getting to the island platform from the station building and current platform was by the use of a 'swing bridge' across the track from platform 1 to the island.

@@bulwinkle You obviously have never been anywhere near Yorkshire. Leeds, my home city, has an average annual rainfall of 660mm per year. That's slightly more than Barcelona, Spain which has 640mm of rain per year. West Yorkshire is east of the Pennines and is one of the drier parts of the country. If you want rain come to Tokyo, it has 1500+ mm's of rain annually. Yet the Japanese think of England as that rainy country. Educate thisen, lad!

I guess someone is employed to sharpen pencils for the man who spent his time figuring out all the subtle differences is speed limits between Sprinters and this train! Given the time that is probably lost at Malton it would be easier to have one lower limit for them all, the time difference would be negligible. And I would love to know why a seemingly flat stable trackbed needs two different limits when there are only a few culverts. I smell a bureaucracy behind all this that would pay for a platform!

Have to admit, this part of Yorkshire by rail is a bit tedious. To liven it up a bit, I set the video speed at 2x, so the 70mph sections are really run at 150mph, and the 100mph ones? It's like watching a Japanese bullet train flying along in northeast England. It's thoroughly enjoyable now, but don't try this in the real world.
