The trouble with protecting yourself from scorpions by wearing shoes is that scorpions like to hide in shoes. Anyone who lives near scorpions knows to shake out their shoes before putting them on - there might be something in there that doesn't want to be squished by toes!

A lot of people carry large ziploc bags and seal their shoes in them for that exact reason. Even if you shake them off there is no guarantee that it will come out and you may be stung on the hand if one does fall out of your shoe while trying to shake it out.

When I lived in the Klamath Indian Reservation in Northern California, we had a couple of hundred black angus and about 80 black bear on the land, One black bear got in the house to get a salmon that my mother was getting ready to cook. We had a cougar that hung out on the roof, crying for my sister to come out for a walk. I got bit by a rattler when I was working at a shipyard in San Pedro, California - which actually had antivenin at hand. There are no safe places.

Occasionally a bobcat has come in someone’s backyard and the bears have raided bird feeders, the coyotes usually stay outside the neighborhood too, but you can sometimes hear them at night, especially during mating season. "Attacked" by rattlesnakes is a bit pejorative. They do not go out of their way to bite humans. Most bites are from people messing with them (or accidentally stepping on them). They are painful and have a long recovery time, but they are not typically fatal. Also - scorpions love to be tucked into your shoes. Always shake them out before putting them on! We are avid hikers. Here is what you need to know about bears: "If it's brown, lie down; if it's black, fight back; if it's white, good night."

The second one was scary: I missed stepping on it by a few inches and was already a couple of feet past it when I heard the rattle. Turned around and saw it coiled up. Almost jumped out of my skin. Knowing the old truck was high enough off the road she figured she could easily drive over it. As the front tires started to climb over the log...it shifted, throwing the truck sideways. She froze inside the truck and watched as a rattlesnake continued it's journey across the road. Longer than she was tall, and as thick as her waist. And the coyotes... You have to be real careful about hanging your stringer of fish off the side of the boat. We always attached the stringer to the boat with a line that would break if the gators decided they wanted your fish. All it takes is one incidence of a gator dragging your boat sideway and threatening to swamp you when he decides your fish are his fish. They can smell you coming from crazy distances!!!!

They didn't realize that it was connected to the Gulf of Mexico. I went off duty and the Game Warden got lucky with some sort of bait, and shot Mr Gator. I live on Galveston island, just across the ship channel from all of this, and have had rattlesnakes, in my back yard, coyotes on my block, water moccasins within 200 yards of my house, alligators on my island ("it's MY island"), and cougars in the neighboring counties. If that weren't enough, we have sharks, stingrays, and eels in the water around us, and are likely to have hurricanes, waterspouts, and tornadoes. Heck the mascots for the local high school teams in the county are the Tornadoes (Galveston), the Cougars (LaMarque), Stingrays (Texas City, TX), and the Gators (Dickinson, TX). Come on down to the Island and enjoy an exciting day, full of action, adventure, and general weirdness.

We live on the outskirts of town in a rural area so we have a field behind our house and on the one side of our house. Sometimes at night the coyotes will come across the fields and come into our back yard. We also get foxes and an occasional bobcat. Bobcats and foxes scream like a woman is being murdered sometimes, it’s absolutely terrifying the first time you hear it because it does sound like a woman screaming in terrible agony. The western coastal areas of Florida also have salt-water crocodiles, who reside in the brackish waters on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. They might also have them on the Atlantic coast, but I haven't spent enough time on that side to say. Saw a crocodile on Sanibel Island right after Hurricane Wilma in 2005. It was dozing in a creek just below the edge of the road through the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. I got within about ten feet of it before backing away very quickly.

2:15 Black Widows are actually mostly harmless. The reason they have the reputation they do is because they're one of only two species of spider native to North America that can harm humans in any way. If bitten by a black widow though, the average person will just get flu symptoms for a few days, then it'll go away on its own. In fact, black widow fatalities are so rare that we only make a single batch of antivenom every year. It's not something to be worried about. It might ruin your week, but it almost certainly won't kill you.

We're 50 mins North of Chicago, and a big cat may occasionally pay a visit, either as an 'exotic pet' that strays from its home, or wanders from far up North. The cat and local coyotes typically want NOTHING to do with people, unless there's food scraps in their bins, or if they may have a tasty dog or cat, especially if the cat is allowed to roam, or dogs are tethered or enclosed in a fenced yard. (If a coyote comes around people in daylight, chances are that it may have rabbies.) There have been cases in which dogs on an on-leash stroll with their owners have been attacked by one or more coyotes, mostly after sunset.

I was nearly taken out by a mountain lion a few years ago. At the time I lived just off the river in a wooded area. Went out back at night & didn’t notice there was a lion sleeping on the roof of a car. Literally was face to face with it inside a couple of feet, easily within it’s striking range. I just kept backing up slowly keeping eye contact & it darted off into the woods. Scary stuff! Also, A gentleman who lived down the block from me was killed unloading cattle from his trailer. They spooked slamming the gate into him & when he fell to the floor they trampled him.

People on the radio made fun of it because it was actually really serious. Also, the manure on their hooves got into the wounds and she got serious infections. Also, I saw a coyote a few years ago. It was standing in a corn field a few blocks from my house when I drove to work and it was just staring at traffic. It was very eerie. They sound really creepy when you hear them barking in the distance at night too.

Adam, I lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado when I was in the Army, I was stationed at Ft. Carson.... anyway, I remember hearing on the news on TV that there were reports of Bears getting into the dumpsters at Taco Bell near the foothills of Pikes Peak.... the Mountain in Colorado Springs. Anyway, apparently the Bear liked Taco Bell food, because the same bear would make it's way to the dumpster, have to be tranquilized by the Forrest Rangers, then transported back over the mountain many miles away. They tagged him, so the always knew it was the same bear.... that was pretty funny! In a different news report, there was a guy who had to call in to work saying he couldn't make it in until the Wildlife Ranger arrived to tranquilize the the mountain lion on his front lawn! Could you imagine going out to your vehicle with a cup of coffee in your hand heading out to your truck and seeing a mountain lion looking at you like you are the one for breakfast?!! I remember another report where kids were not allowed to go out to the playground at recess because there were bear cubs playing on the playground.... where baby cubs are, mother is surely close by! There were reports of people looking out into their back yard and seeing a bear family going swimming in their pool..... you take your chances living among the beautiful scenery of the mountains, there were always reports of people finding their pets killed by wild life, or come up missing altogether! The people in the news did their best to warn new people moving into the area not to leave their pets outside, especially in the spring time when wild life are really hungry after hibernating during the winter months in the mountains! People really need to think before they move to places..... I just believe people have forgotten to think things through altogether!! Enjoyed the video.....

They didn’t realize coyotes were stalking them until they heard a growl from a dense thicket as soon as they heard it they took off running. They made a big mistake by leaving their guns in the truck and they were lucky that the guys were there and fired a shot and they took off running the other way. When I was 12 I went hunting for the first time I had an encountered with a black bear come crashing through the woods and stop just below our tree stand. It stood up on its back legs and sniffing the air then noticed we were in the tree and started climbing the tree but thank god it gave up and got down and ran off

Coyotes do not stalk people with intent to do harm. They are just extremely curious. I've had an entire pack walk around me on both sides no more than ten feet away. I've been around coyotes and black bears my entire life. Neither are aggressive in any way. Black bear attacks are extremely rare, though this is largely because the most aggressive ones were killed off long ago, and only the more timid ones survived to breed.

But one day a ranger took me out in the Prairie to get a picture of a Sunburst (sort of a Venus Fly Trap) but instead she let out a scream. I stopped immediately! Then she asked me if I needed to get a pygmy rattler for the park? Yes, I did. She pointed to where it was. I saw nothing. She pointed more until I could see it. It's a pretty snake but it was posed ready to strike. I took 4 shots. Only one was good because I was shaking out of fear. Later that year, they used it in a campground slide show so tourists could understand how well camouflaged snakes can be. Coyotes come into the city of Chicago all the time.

We had a stand off for a moment, then I backed away. The Lion turned and ran up the mountian side. I went jogging in our neighborhood and had two large coyotes following me. I turned around and yelled for about a minute and they ran from me and jumped over a neighbors 6 foot tall block fence. They jump up and put their front leg on the top, and then they push themselves up by using the back legs to climb up the fence. Always know all about the animals in your area and you'll be fine. We also have scorpions, and I hate them! They give me the creeps! I've lived here for years and have never been bitten. The joys of living in the American South West.

I'm in South Carolina. There are alligators that live in the pond behind my house. Just keep a respectable distance and make sure your dog can't get to the edge of the pond. I see them every day and have never had any problem.

11:48 a great number of scorpion stings occur when you put your foot into your shoe without checking it first as the scorpions like to crawl into shoes to hang out.

CT always had coyotes, but over the years, they have gotten bigger. In my area, they were a little bigger than a fox. Then, they began feasting on the abundant wild turkeys, and now they are the size of a Labrador.

Home from work at 2am, there's (what I think is) a yellow lab running around my front yard! How exciting, I get to play with a dog! I get out of the car and call it, start walking over as it runs to the 6' fence. It stands there, for a seconds then jumps from a standstill, to the top of the fence, then ONTO THE ROOF of the house next door. I got back in the car and sat there for the LONGEST time not daring to walk across the lawn to the house. It was a mountain lion.

Okay so yes, cows can be evil. The man in the pool holding up the gator was one of The Gator Boys which was a series on Animal Planet. They rescue gators and run a preserve just for gators. Do you know how many rodents we would have if not for snakes?? The coyote is not a large animal but they can be deadly. The wolf is much larger and is also aggressive. And yes, this is one of the reasons we have weapons. 😉

I live in rural Arizona. My neighbor bought a cow for milking. Somehow she didn’t realize it was a Mexican Longhorn cross. Ruby decided to break out of her pen & run with the local ranchers herd of Black Angus. You can still see Ruby with the herd.

I’m in Arizona all my life, & I can tell you that my mom sat on a rattle snake & ended up in icu. She did survive. Regarding the bark scorpions: I’ve seen them all over my house. They were seen in my shoes, climbing up the walls, in my kitchen sink, you name it. Tarantulas aren’t deadly, but their huge (5”) size can scare the crap out of you if you run into one on the couch.

There are many people in Mexico who are very poor. They basically live in shacks. The door only covered by a sheet. Many sleep on a mattress on the dirt floor. This is why so many are stung by the scorpions.

When i was 15 i was doing some labor around my aunt's daycare she ran at her church. I saw a cougar lounging in a tree about 24-30 yards from where the kids were playing outside. I told the teacher to get the kids inside quietly and walked between the kids and the cat then went inside after the kids and their teacher got inside. Fun times

I'm not even in the mountains and we have deer, bear, coyotes, snakes, and (reportedly) mountain lions. Few weeks ago buddy from work sent me a ring camera video from his mom's salon of a bear. Her salon is 1/4 mile up the road. I was right by her salon multiple times that day because we were using the parking lot to park people for a party we were having. I would go fetch them on a side by side and bring them back to the house. I'll hear the coyotes yipping in the distance occasionally. One day I came home from work early and a snake was just chilling right inside my front door. I've hit 8 deer in various vehicles over the years.

In Albuquerque NM, My daughter had to leave her apartment for a couple of days, while they were exterminating an infestation of scorpions. We had the "great bear invasion", where many bears came down from the mountains into the city, looking for apple trees. My daughter also had rattlesnakes infest her basement. Hitting a deer is always a risk, also elk and antelope. There are coyotes all over. Little dogs and cats are called coyote bait, but owls and hawks can also get them. We also have incidents of bubonic plague here in NM.

We have rattle snakes in Long Island Ny which I didn't know but I have seen garter snakes and only a cotton mouth once in North Carolina. I was sitting on top of the stairs of a beach out in the outer banks enjoying the warm day while everyone else was at the beach as I thought I saw something moving at the top of the driveway. I realized it was a massive four foot cotton mouth snake as it was a pitch black scales but watched in awe as it moved past. never seen one in person but really incredible but dangerous animals. Definitely had to thank Steve Irwin for instilling a respect yet fascination for these guys too rather then fear.

Cows - Keep in mind that there are people whose entire job consists of managing thousands of cows at once. Like, they can hurt you but its pretty rare if you're careful. Deer - Deer are stupid. Great reactions, but incredibly smooth brained. Gators - Gators are chill. I maintain anyone who has ever gotten hurt by a gator was doing something stupid like walking up to it to poke it or not checking large bodies of water before approaching. According to reports Covert (the lady from the video) was literally walking up to it while people were telling her to get away. Kid gets a pass cause he was 2, I don't know if the parents were charged but they should have been for not paying attention. Snakes - All snakes, not just rattlers; watch where you step, keep your eyes and ears open, wear good jeans. They don't want to bite you because they know they can't eat you, its purely defensive. Mountain Lion - They don't go out of their way to attack humans but if you're in their territory the best you can do is back away for a couple hours until it decides you've gone far enough. Don't fight back, don't turn your back on it, don't run. Just steadily back away and keep yourself as big as you can. Alternatively, gun. Coyotes - Pronounce it "Kai-oat". The e is silent. They're one of the 'respect them and you'll be fine' class of animals; they're not just a dirty puppy, they're a wild animal and you have to remember to treat them as such. A coyote would have to be amazingly desperate (or sick but then you have a whole different problem) to go after a human unprovoked. Wolves - I... honestly don't have much advice for this because I don't live in wolf country. Standard wild animal advice I guess; avoid, stay strapped, stay near a car. Might be worth carrying a repellent if you're gonna be camping. Scorpion - Insect proof your house, wear shoes, socks, and jeans outside. Don't have that particular variety, but that's the good advice for preventing small creepy crawlies. Bears - You can usually scare off black bears; those given examples were incredibly atypical. Don't mess with grizzlies; if the gun or mace doesn't scare them off it just makes them angry at you. If you're not able to get to your car fast enough your best option with a grizzly is to literally lie down and let them hurt you for a while. Eventually they'll get bored and leave you alone. Don't run, you'll just die tired.

At my parents' house above Estes Park, Colorado, we had bears try to get into his bear proof tradh can regularly. He had to use fence posts to fasten it down, because they'd pick it up and flip it over and the contents would get all over the interior. I had a bear walk up behind me twice in one summer, about 30 feet away. I asked them what they thought they were doing, and they stood up, looked at me, and ran off. No cubs involved, thank God! I'm a lot more leery of elk, and especially moose, which we've had many times. Moose operate on the theory of "if it worries you, stomp on it".

I have mountain lions go through my back yard occasionally. Coyotes everywhere. Wolves about 50 miles north. Black bears. It's pretty wild out here.

My husband was getting out of his car one evening during winter and was getting something out of his car. Our dog started to bark from the window in a way he never heard before and when he turned around there was a coyote creeping up on him and stood 10 feet away him. It didn’t run off right away it just stood there staring him down trying to size him up until it finally walked off. We live in a heavily wooded area in southwestern Ohio and it is not uncommon to see them in our backyards.

Cows run wild out in the west, the road signs reads "Open Range." The ranchers rent the National Forests and cows and sheep run loose to keep the grass grazed and help keep forest fires down. The sheep have shepherds and herding dogs moving with the flocks.

I’ve lived all over the place, I’m in Virginia now and I’ve had black bears, rattlers, copperheads, and coyotes. In Florida of course gators, cottonmouths, rattlers which don’t always rattle down there because they’re scared of the boar, and now they have pythons! In Vegas those bark scorpions are a pain they can get everywhere especially the young small ones which hurt worse, basically like 5 bees stinging you at once but they’re kinda cool and trippy they glow a bright greenish blue under black light

Ever been out in the woods when suddenly everything goes quiet and the hair stands up on the nape of your neck? And you suddenly KNOW a predator is watching you? I have. Upon turning around and heading back to my vehicle, i ran across a set of cougar prints in the light dusting of snow on the ground. It was shadowing me as I walked through the woods. I keep a loud air horn with me as well as my rifle. I don't mind admitting that I fired off one round in the air and used the horn periodically on my way back to my vehicle. I stopped at the closest ranger station to ask about cougar sightings and was told that there had been several in the past week. Yes, it was in Oregon
