The bear rhyme for Americans is "If it's Black, fight back. If it's Brown, lay down. If it's White, say good-night." A Black Bear coming at you means you should make yourself look as large and scary as possible and make as much noise as you can to frighten it away. Brown Bears/Grizzly Bears, there's no point to that exercise because you cannot intimidate them. So that's where your one hope if you can't withdraw safely is to drop to the ground and absolutely play dead. You might still get mauled a bit, but it'll lessen the damage assuming you can stop yourself from crying out when it messes with you to see if you're really dead yet. And White Bears are Kodiak Bears/ Polar Bears. They are Persistence Predators and they are large enough and mean enough to think that you are a snack. They won't scare away and they won't be bored by you playing dead. So if you run into a White Bear, get ready to start your permanent dirt nap.

@@daveratledge They are not extremely unpredictable. Animals tend to act in fairly similar ways based on species. The reason you fight back isn't because they're smaller, its because they tend to be non-confrontational because they're not big on predation of large animals. It is much more dangerous to run from a black bear because that means that if its hungry enough it will realize you're afraid of it which means you think you can't take it. If you act like you could at least injure it, most black bears won't take the risk unless they're basically starving to death.

He stood up and stared at me for about 20 seconds before going on his way. I encountered quite a few out there and they were all pleasant encounters, I also worked at a zoo later on and they are so chill. And that's the key to interacting with them 90% of the time, keep your chill. They can still rock your sh*t but they arent looking to fight, they are more inclined to berries and fish than red meat. One very notable exception is in the deepest deep wood with minimal human contact. They are still generally chill but they need to be worried about to a higher degree (still not as bad as the more agro browns but more akin to the chill brown bears that feast on salmon)
@EmilySmirleGURPS5 ай бұрын
@@ConstantChaos1 The other place you need to worry about black bears is in the far north. The black bears there have to eat anything they can find, and eat a lot of caribou when they're around. They also haven't seen many humans (if any) and don't get scared by the sound of gunshots because they don't know what that means. If it's the off season for caribou (they migrate), the bears will be hungry, and willing to risk a fight for a good meal. Humans are about the size of a caribou, which makes us veeeery interesting to those hungry northern bears.

Bison and buffalo are two distinct animals often confused with each other, but they have several differences: Bison • Habitat: Native to North America and Europe. • Appearance: Bison have a large hump over their shoulders and a thick coat of fur, which they shed in the spring. Their heads are large, with short, curved horns. • Species: There are two main species of bison: the American bison (Bison bison) and the European bison (Bison bonasus). • Size: Generally larger and more robust compared to buffalo, with males weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kg) and standing about 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall at the shoulder. • Common Name: American bison are often colloquially referred to as “American buffalo,” though they are not true buffalo. Buffalo • Habitat: Native to Africa and Asia. • Appearance: Buffalo do not have a hump. They have smoother coats and longer, more curved horns. • Species: There are two main species of buffalo: the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and the Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). • Size: African buffalo are generally smaller than bison, weighing up to 1,900 pounds (860 kg) and standing about 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall at the shoulder. Water buffalo can be quite large, with males weighing up to 2,600 pounds (1,200 kg). Key Differences • Hump: Bison have a prominent hump; buffalo do not. • Horn Shape: Bison have short, curved horns; buffalo have longer, more curved horns. • Coat: Bison have thick, shaggy coats, especially in winter; buffalo have smoother, less dense coats. • Geographic Distribution: Bison are found in North America and Europe; buffalo are found in Africa and Asia. • Common Name Confusion: American bison are often called “American buffalo,” which can lead to confusion, but they are distinct from true buffalo found in Africa and Asia.

I grew up around Gators and for the most part, we co existed with them growing up as a kid. We leave them alone and they left us alone, now with all of the tourist in Florida and idiots feeding them, they are no longer afraid of us and more incidents will happen. As for Gatorade, It was developed by the University of Florida and their mascot is the Alligator and teams are called The Gators. I do attend the Florida - Georgia football games every year.

Black bears are easily seen as people are building in their habitats. They eat our bird food. They’re quite skittish but the female is aggressive if she has cubs to protect. I wish we put aside habitats for them that people can’t take over. They are looking for food if they come around human homes usually looking in garbage or bird feeders. I had one take a nap in my back yard. He eventually went away. Poor little guy.

The difference between Brown & Black bears. Alaska's largest State Park literally has a sign at the entrance.... "Wear small bells on your boots so the Black Bears know where you are & carry pepper spray to help you if you come up on one. & You can recognize Black Bear poop because it's smaller darker pellets. Brown Bear poop on the other hand, is larger, more like a cow pie. & It's full of bells & smells like pepper."

Polar bears are the only bears known to actively hunt humans for food. Cute, yes, cuddly, absolutely not! Kodiak bears are brown bears, the largest of the bear species.
@thegreywardenherald89236 ай бұрын
Polar bears on average are both taller and heavier than Kodiaks, and the largest bear ever killed was a Polar Bear. That makes the Polar Bear the largest bear species.

It's sort of odd that some people can become acclimated to things which would shock others, and not even think about it. I live in a town that has varied from -20° to 112° (-29°C to 44°C). We get surface winds gusting to 80mph (128kph). We have bears, cougars, badgers, rattlesnakes, poisonous spiders, scorpions, tarantulas, skunks, and even porcupines (I never knew they could be found in the desert). Bighorn sheep and antelope can occasionally come to the edge of town. And this general area is so thick with wild mustangs that they are a nuisance to homeowners and a hazard on the roads. And it doesn't even seem remarkable when you are accustomed to it. I wonder at people's reactions when I casually mention I had to remove a 6' bullsnake from the office because he was getting under foot, or stop on the road to put a 3,000 lb bull back into the field and close the gate. Edit: it was 100° today, followed by lightning and some brief wind gusts around 40-50mph. Now I'm sitting on the porch with a glass of wine, listening to the coyotes singing.

Gators are interesting animals, their bite is strong enough to crush a turtle shell, but it’s fairly easy to hold their jaws closed. They can climb fences, but are generally actually pretty docile. Just don’t act like a fish, and you’ll be fine. That said, if you ever come to Florida, and you see a pond, River, lake, canal, or large ditch, keep in mind there’s at least one gator in it, and it’s probably bigger than you think it is. There was a story a while back about a guy who was trying to break into houses, but jumped in a pond to hide when the cops were called, and they apparently heard yelling but couldn’t locate the source. Turns out they found most of that guy a few days later, his body was being guarded by a 9 foot long alligator

I actually had someone who lived a couple streets away from my house in the rural mountains who started feeding the bears and the next thing I knew I had a 500 lb black bear on my porch while I was sitting right inside the wide open window so we were eye to eye about 4 feet apart! That was actually terrifying! We actually do have a bear hunting season because we have a LOT of bears but it’s illegal to kill one otherwise so when the bear who was on my porch damaged the truck of the people who were feeding it and dragged their deep freezer out of their garage and into the woods they had the bear declared a “nuisance” and Fish and Wildlife came out and “put it down” which pissed off a lot of us but that’s how I know that he was 500 lbs

I live in rural Virginia at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. We have deer, turkey, bobcats, coyotes, and black bears (amongst many other critters) around our house. Whilst we do not ever feed them, several black bear frequent our compost heap and enjoy the berries growing wild on our fence rows. "Boris" is our alpha black bear. He wonders by about every 6 months or so. I always know when he's around because not only can I small his musky odor, but none of my dogs are willing to venture into into our fully fenced back yard until all the lights are on and I go with them. They're more than happy to defend us against everything else that ventures around, but even our male Shar Pei wants nothing to do with Boris.

Random fact: Wolf spiders are used as a natural pesticide in some cranberry fields/bogs. Farmers flood the field/bog and the ripe cranberries float to the top. Workers have to wade into the water to help harvest, and since the spiders want to survive, it's almost guaranteed for the workers to be swarmed and/or bitten by the arachnids. They aren't poisonous, but their bite is painful.

1:53 [Etymology] Polecat (n.) "small, dark-brown, _Northern European_, predatory quadruped of the weasel family." ~Noted as a chicken-thief and for its strong, offensive smell, early 14th century. pol-cat, from cat (n.); The first element is perhaps Anglo-French "pol", from Old French _poule_ "fowl, hen" (see pullet (n.)); so called because it preys on poultry [Skeat]. The other alternative is that the first element is from Old French _pulent_ "stinking." Originally the European Putorius foetidus; *the name was extended to related North American skunks after 1680s**

We have a rule in my family. It started when my oldest daughter was little. I took her to our new park to check it out. She wanted to swing. I was pushing her and these 2 little boys were playing with the steering wheel thing. They called out to her. Told her to hurry, hurry!! She needed to get on the ship! The spiders were taking over the world! Hurry! While swinging. She called back. No. The spiders are not taking over. Because spiders don't go where i play. And. If they do, my Momma will kill them. So they stay away. She was so calm and matter of fact for a little 2 year old. They just wanted to play. She just couldn't imagine that world. Lol So rule is still even 22 years later. No spiders where Brynna would play. If she would be there, even if she's not, spiders can't be. Get em before they run n hide. You don't want them to try to take over the world. Lol

I used to work at a hotel in a rural area, and I always told guests at check-in never to put their trash outside of their room and to call the desk so one of us could pick it up. At least once a week, I would get a panicked phone call about a black bear digging through the trash they left outside their room. So, these folks never intentionally fed the bears, but the bears learned where to go for food on a Saturday night (after hitting up the dumpster behind the Mexican restaurant next to us).

Heck, Ive had pet gopher snakes, I found them almost frozen. let them warm up in front of my refrigerator, did the same with a Ca king snake. They hung out on the floor, I fed them thawed frozen mice. Then in spring I turned them loose, they went nuts, shot up my arms like "No way are you putting me out here where its hard to find food and stay safe." I still had to unwrap them and turn them loose. I've had a brown bat that I found him beating against my window, I put him in a cage and kept him for the winter, feeding him soft canned cat food, when I turned him loose in the spring, he screamed like he was being torn apart. did not want to go back. But I had to turn him loose,. I was a weird young woman, I loved nature and animals. I was a nurse at the time. and just took care of who ever or what ever needed help.

That alligator is real. Having been born and raised in South Florida, the largest I have ever seen was about 20 ft long and nearly 1K pounds. It looked like a dinosaur. BTW, apparently, there are now Monitor Lizards in Florida as well. An invasive species, like Iguanas and Pythons which now make themselves at home in the Everglades swamps. All of that to go with roaches than can fly and grow two inches long and mosquitoes that carry Dengue fever. Oh, and the occasional shark and Man O'War jellyfish in the gulf. Fun place.

I have to say the black bears in Wisconsin are really cute and they are not aggressive. They're like bees, you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. I wouldn't say they're common but they kind of are in rural areas. They scare easily but there are like a 1,000 videos of bears playing in people's back yards and getting into swimming pools. I think the moose is more dangerous because they are all in a bad mood and very aggressive. A moose can do a lot of damage thankfully they are mostly in the north in less populated areas.

Hold on, that was a sun bear inserted into the black bear portion at 4:37.
