That was fantastic. Both the techniques, and the slow, clear and methodical way you explained them.. Many thanks.

More videos please Roy. Beautiful exposition. I put a higher belt in scarf last night and he and others got quite upset ( I am a no stripe white belt ). He couldn't get out and he didn't want to tap to the shoulder lock. Once he tapped to the arm bar he came after me with a vengeance ( literally ) and a purple belt told me that I had behaved badly because that "wasn't jiu jitsu". I always like to talk with whoever I tap about what the hold was and what the defenses/escapes are, especially if I think they don't know the position, so thanks for the video. Given the fact that I could hold him there, I figured I better learn the escapes myself.

+Ed McGuigan You train with ego clowns. Scarfhold and related submissions are perfectly legal in BJJ.

Wow. Scarf hold isn't jiu jitsu What lame place are you training
@errcoche3 жыл бұрын
@@Medreg1983 It was a lame place but I didn't know that at the time. It was lame because it was the kind of place where a higher belt would put you in a submission or pass your guard and never explain what you were doing wrong. I train at a much better place now. Bullying not allowed, a lot of very experienced higher belts and a culture of sharing. I envy our white belts to be honest. They get the equivalent of private classes when they drill one on one with purple and brown belts.

As a smaller person, I like the arm grip escape, but how do you get a good grip without using the illegal 4 fingers in?
@MaxLohMusic3 жыл бұрын
What do you do if they magically backstep to the other side during the bridge/roll? Similar to the backstepping counter to the scissor sweep, but even more ridiculous (I think only a wrestler can do it)

When people try that first version of the escape on me, I just post with my hand. They usually give it a few good efforts before realizing there's nothing they can do there. That's because I'm grabbing the inside of my own thigh with the hand that's near it, which closes up the space that would allow the shoulder to drop down and get the arm out and escape. I'm a BJJ student but I borrowed that detail from Erik Paulson/Josh Barnett videos. The arm is trapped this way so I have a free hand to post with. I can't attack while they're trying to bridge and roll, because I need the hand to post. But, at the same time, they're not escaping that way. I have a tighter Kesa Gatame than most but the second escape in this video works really well even when I think I have them stuck pretty tightly. I don't have an answer for that escape, other than using the arm that's under their head to hold them in a wizard grip instead, which can crack ribs if you're not careful.
@FlowithdaGo2 жыл бұрын
By posting your arm, you open up for other escapes; your partner's elbow are now free! That´s how the first technique is really meant for; a door opener for other escapes, which you chain together.

What all instructors making videos on Scarf Hold escapes fail to mention is that when the person performing the scarf hold is doing it correctly it is IMPOSSIBLE to escape. In this video the guy performing the scarf hold is making four critical errors. Number one is that he's holding onto his own leg with the arm that goes behind his opponents head. His left arm is effectively trapped whenever the bottom guy decides to bridge. His hand should be behind his opponents head forming a "rooster". (Picture that thing on top of a rooster's head). This way his opponent's head is off the matt. This brings me to number two. His head is way too high. He should be ducking down so that his head is the same height as his opponent's or less. Number three is that he isn't holding his opponent's left arm properly. He should be pulling that arm directly towards the ceiling. This is what keeps his opponent's back on the matt. And finally number four, his legs are positioned incorrectly. People commonly say they should be in a swastika position however this does not stop you from getting push-bridged or shoveled. Instead of a swastika think of the playboy bunny except with only one ear. His left leg is closest to the matt so it should point straight out towards 12:00 and not be bent at the knee. His right leg is furthest off the matt so it should be bent with the heel pointing towards 7:00-8:00. When all these attributes are trained properly Scarf Hold becomes the most powerful hold in all of wrestling. Good scarf holders can end matches with crippling shoulder locks directly from this hold.

CristianV88 I fully agree here. Never had anyone escape from my scarf holds.
@spoonman736 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that input. Never was trained properly on it but I have always gravitated to this hold. How come Jujutsu players don't seem to use it or take it seriously?
@OlovMetal5 жыл бұрын
@@spoonman73 ayee, the position called out to me as well. Not a lot of people in my Bjj started to use it but after the attacks came, they became really worried at being even caught in the position in the first place. It is a truly powerful position if you understand the complete arsenal of attacks and the very structure to create pressure. Truly an unappreciated position in Bjj.

we currently do Judo in PE and I’ve seen all these techniques but I always grab their right shoulder with my right hand and pull it down and away while doing a rolling motion into the same direction 🤷🏽♀️ works well too 😂😂

I understand this video is very old, but could you do a video on how to escape the scarf hold with their legs triangled around the far side arm? Thanks
@CavvyStudios8 жыл бұрын
By that point, I think you would escape by tapping the mat. ;)

Nah I worked it out, you swing top leg over their triangled ankle, With your triangled hand, gran their ankles and violently swing your weight forward to gain side mount :)

If a good Judo player gets you in Kesa, you're pretty much done, unless you're exceptionally good at getting out, it's also very easy to get a submission from that position.

Oh and there are a few MUCH better ways to escape scarf hold. The only thing is that the wrestler being held must catch his opponent slacking in order to pull them off because as I've said before Scar Hold is inescapable.
