Tip for new players: The candles are meant to be stationary. YOu CAN move with them SLOWLY, but it's not worth the hassle bc eventually a monster will catch up to you. instead, place them in key areas where you can light them easily and leave them there. places like top of the stairs, bottom stairs. in front of doors accessed a lot. open expanses of areas like the kitchen. remember where you place them so you can easily re-light them if they get blown out

House noises are fantastic tension builders. It's not scary on its own exactly, but it prevents you from calming from the last scare. The subtle creak of wood could mean either the house is settling...or someone is upstairs. More games need to use it. Sound design is important, as well you know, Sean.

It’s scarier. Like in a mansion you don’t know where something could be hiding and there are way more places to hide and run and it’s usually solitary, there’s nobody else around you band cause it’s on a lot of land so that ads to the effect. I feel like a small apartment would be boring in a way but I’d love to see somebody make a game in that setting well done and interesting.

You're trapped in your apartment and can only leave through a gaping hole in the bathroom to go to an alternate hell dimension, and your apartment slowly becomes more and more haunted throughout the game. It's really great and terrifying, and I think it's my favorite Silent Hill game.

This reminded me of a time that I experienced true, adrenaline pumping fear. I was on vacation in the mountains, in the middle of nowhere, in a small castle-hotel thing. The only light in my bedroom was a nightlight in the bathroom, which I could see straight into while in bed. Later that night, I woke up, and when I opened my eyes, I could have sworn on my life there was someone standing next to my bed, wearing all black with some kind of black vest. I could only see from the chest down, and my gut instinct was to try to act as if I hadn't woken. Lying there, adrenaline pumping with nothing to expend it on, for several minutes even after I realized there was no one there, made me short of breath and shuddering. That morning I checked what it had been, and it was just a textured clay relief sculpture hanging on the wall. The night light had struck it in such a way that it looked like the bright moonlight from the window was striking a figure in wrinkled black clothing to my sleep drunk brain. I couldn't fucking sleep for a month. Anyone else have any "Fuck my overactive brain" moments like this?

I remember once when i was little(8-9 years) i had to stay in my grandma's house alone because my family had gone to a funeral. I actually went to sleep with no problem at all until some strange and loud noise woke me up, in front of the bed there was an old radio that didnt work quite well and sometimes it would turn on by itself and start going crazy changing stations and increasing volume at random at that moment i could only think of running outside the house and wait in the street until my family arrived. Obviously i now know it was a faulty radio but still its probably one of the scariest moments i have ever lived.

I've experienced sleep paralysis before, that stuff will mess you up. You're "awake", but your body and mind aren't in sync, so A. you can't move, and B. you have vivid waking dreams. Had one where some guy just walked in my room and stood over me. I couldn't see his face because I couldn't move. In another one I heard something come in through my window, then lay down on top of me. That one was before I knew what sleep paralysis was, so I panicked and just kept my eyes closed hoping it'd go away. Luckily I drifted off to actual sleep shortly after.

I remember I was little and I was sick, and I was starting to get hallucinations. There's a few stories I have about that: In my room, I have a closet, with mirror sliding windows parallel to the bed. I looked in the mirror, and I could swear I had no face. The night after that, I had a nightmare that an ugly hag was chasing me and trying to rip out my spine. I woke up screaming. My mom then ran in wearing that green facemask women wear and I just about died of fright. I tell you, being that sick sucks. Yhe fever dreams can get bad, and when I got sick more recently ( those other stories for from when I was around 10), so take my advice: DO NOT BINGE RICK AND MORTY WHEN SICK! It makes for the most mind melting, incomprehensible, indescribable dream in the damn world.

Yeah very odd house. Although they used to build some really strange houses where rooms lead to other rooms rather than had hallways. Not sure why they did such things but there was a time when houses had a lot more "living" areas or "entertaining" areas. Think about how in old books it could say how they had a guest or caller wait in a parlor or sitting room. There was also an era where a lot of people had servants who worked in rooms like the butters pantry.... I saw some homes on a vacation in New Orleans that were so narrow and long you could hardly believe it. I think many of them were like converted carriage houses. I think most of them were so narrow that they had a room that just attached to another room that attached to another room on down the length of the house. I think the importance of privacy has grown quite a lot in very recent history. I mean is some old houses the parents, children and grandparents all lived in the same big room. I don't know, and shudder to think, how they handled procreation in that environment!!

My parents hold a love for old homes so I have grown up around house creaks, skittering mice, and even floorboards creaking from footsteps when I'm sure everyone is asleep. Alas, I have no ghosty tales, but it definitely used to keep me up sometimes. Especially the little mice always scratching shit in my closet. I like to see that mentioned in horror, it brings a kind of familiarity to it that is unsettling (like Jack pointed out.)
