Luigi’s mansion used to scare me as a kid so much when I was little, I remember seeing things like a be-headed bowser and stuff and I would have nightmares for days. I’m so glad the newer version is not as creepy as the old one.

I grew up with Luigi’s Mansion 2 on the 3DS instead of the first game and the game never really scared me until I entered the last Haunted Mansion. I had never seen King Boo before so this was my first introduction to him. When Luigi opened the door and the entry was all black and dark even when Luigi used his flashlight, it was already scary in itself. But I truly pissed my pants when Luigi turned around and suddenly King Boo stood in the doorway behind Luigi, looming over him. After that part I was anticipating another encounter with King Boo the whole game and I was so afraid I often had to put my 3DS down to try and relax. That one jumpscare where King Boo suddenly turned around and laughed at the screen in frozen camera footage especially fucked me up. I was scared to go to bed at night and even asked if my brother could sleep in my room at times. You were deathly afraid of the first Luigi’s Mansion and you’re glad the second game isn’t scary, but I, as a younger generation, was terrified of the second game lol. I’ve never played the first game though and at this point I’ve already seen so many spoilers for it that the magic of the eeriness has been ruined sadly, and it’s too late to give it a try. But damn it’s funny how you and I are so different on this aspect. Sorry for this giant comment, I just wanted to share my little experience hehe.

Luigi's Mansion would've been the very first Mario game ever to get a rated T rating. Before release, it was supposed to be an actual scary Mario game with scary monsters and an even more dreading atmosphere. But during development it was thought to be too disturbing and not fitting for kids... and also has this one device that's supposed to go with it. But no success came out of it and was scrapped. But man... that would'be been... AWESOME. Now... all we got when it comes with horror in Mario game(s) is the hidden ghosts in some backgrounds of certain Mario games...

Also to add something to hidden ghosts...If you complete a chapter orrr whatever its called and you look at the portrait machine. Look closley at one of the parts at the bottom. You can see a pair of 3 ghosts that never made it into the game.

The scariest one for me is probably when Mario drowns. Its not like most times when a character dies in a video game, they either fall off the screen, or you just get the game over screen. My theory on Luigi's Mansion GCN Is that Luigi had time to save Mario but if he ran out of time the mansion would fade away killing Mario in the painting disintegrating him and not only did Mario die but we don't see him as a ghost or anything so this gives a fact that the possibility is that Mario went to a heaven or something or *Mario's soul got disintegrated in the painting along with his body.*

So I think I should try and explain the last image of Luigi, this image was never planned to be in Luigi's Mansion and was just used to promote the game in the E3 2001 trailer. If you look up the trailer you will see that same face at the end of it but if you look up beta gameplay of the game on the show floor that was never a beta game over. In the E3 beta, you had till 1:30 AM to explore the mansion, at 1:30, E Gadd would call Luigi and that would send you back to the main menu. I do understand why people would think the face shown would be a game over like screen but in no way was it intended to be as it was just to promote the game.

Deathy no, he got depressed because in the beta version instead of a health bar there was a time limit. The time limit was the amount of time you had left to save mario and if you didn't save him under the amount of time you were given, Mario would die and that would be a "bad ending" as they call it and Luigi leaves the mansion with this depressed look on his face sorry you had to read all that i just wanted to explain it and didn't intend to make it sound rude if it did

The Majora's Mask moon crashing scene was much better on the original N64; going straight to the 'terrible fate' text. For a few seconds you wonder if your save game is gone and you're going to have to start over... on the 3DS, they are effectively just saying "reset the game and go back to your previous save".
