In the Amazon forest in Brazil we have two major myths: o boto cor de rosa (the pink dolphin) and Iara. The boto goes out of the river and turns himself into a really handsome man that impregnates young women, and Iara is a mermaid that drowns men. I'm pretty sure both myths are indigenous based, so maybe they're part of our hermanos amazonian culture as well...

I should check with my dad first before typing this, but in E.S it's La Ziguanaba and El Cipitillo(that I know of). La Ziguanaba is a beautiful woman that men will come across in the middle of the night by the river. She sings and lures him to her. Once he's close enough she turns into her true form: an old hag! She's an espiritu malo who's out to kill those men. Fine, I'm cool with that. El Cipitillo gave me the creeps, though. He's a little boy wearing this large sombrero that obscures his face and he stands outside the window of a virgin and whistles to get her attention. Once she opens the door he lures her outside, and again-- he's a mal espiritu, so watch out! But the image of a tiny little boy seducing a virgin-- all kinds of weird and gross!!!

In Brazil, we have the Cuca, an Caiman witch that lives in the wild and comes to cook you in a cuoldron. There was a show called "Yellow Woodpecker Ranch" that scared me shitless because of its use of folklore. Also, the costume they used for her in the show legit scared me.

I went to Frutillar and to avoid stepping the floor of the lake I tried to go only on the rocks... I sliced like 30cm of the skin on my canilla on some sharp rocks while falling. That was how scared of El cuero I was back then, I was 18 yo. It happens that the sceneries are so magical that once you're there you'll believe all the shit, even the craziest stories. Once I saw a little ghost girl at school so now I believe that crazy shit could happen.

La rubia o novia de Kennedy here in Chile. There's an important street here called "Avenida Presidente Kennedy" and there were reports in 1979 onwards that a Blond women appeared hitchhiking in that road between the intersections with "Americo Vespucio" and with "Geronimo de Alderete". If you picked her up, she would suddenly vanish from your car, eventhough you didn't stop or opened your doors. This even made it to the newspapers. Years after it was confirmed, by her own family, that a woman by the name of Maria Infante who fitted the description of the appearances died in 1978 in a tragic accident in the intersection of Kennedy and Geronimo de Alderete, she was about to get married. Hence the name "Kennedy's blond" or "Kennedy's fiancee"

When I was little, in Chile we had this show called "La Ley de La Selva", it was supposed to teach children about animals and wildlife, but they always ended talking about Chupacabra somehow, don't ask me why. Of course, the show came out at night and most of us couldn't sleep after watching it

In Australia we have this urban legend called a bunyip. It basically has all the nightmare full for children because it’s said that the creature has wings, tusks, fur and scales. A lot of indigenous tales describe this creature as large, aggressive, and water-dwelling. This was the perfect myth to make kids in primary school not want to sleep or even swim in the pool.

In Costa Rica, we have La Llorona as well. But we also have "La Segua" and "El Cadejos". El Cadejos is one of my favorites (I don't know why actually). It is about a drunken father who was always sleeping during the day and drinking all night long. The story says one day when he came home after drinking a lot of alcohol, his son took some chains and a put on a leather cloak and hid on a dark corner outside his house. When his father was getting close, hi started to sound the chains thru the grown and walked on 4 feet. The father got scared as hell and when found out it was his son, he cursed him: "Por asustarme “cadejos” quedarás y a todos los borrachos del mundo en sus necesidades ayudarás”. Since then, when a drunken guy is walking home, some says they hear a chain sound behind them and some time they even see a spooky and fantastic animal that looks as a huge dog, with fiery eyes, very long and matted hair.

I’d love to see that!! El Silbón and El Hachador are very similar, and I believe they have the same origin, though the difference with El Hachador (apart from the axes instead of whistling) is that you gotta run backwards to escape him. Or so I read. 🤔

In Puerto Rico,we have the legend of La Loca del caño Guajataca. Aparetly this french lady lived with her husband and daughter in Guajataca and her husband worked in the train that transported sugar cane. Soo everyday she waited for her husband to come from work in the same place and one day he didn't came back. She waited everyday in the same spot but the husband never showed up. A couple of years later her daughter died of a deadly disease spreding around the island leaving her mother alone. Years past by and the lady kept going to the same place just to wait, until she died. According to the legend, if you are a man and pass through that area around 2:00 am and you are alone, she is going to appear at your back seat thinking you are her lost husband.

In Spain we have "La santa compaña" wich is basically a proceasion of dead people who lure at night in the woods, the one who sees it, sees their dead relatives and is attracted to join the eternal walk of the death. Depending of where the story is told, how to avoid dying changes, but the story I was told says that you've got to throw yourself to a pit in order to avoid looking at them.

There was this one time on día de muertos in Xochimilco in Mexico City that they were doing a show of la llorona and people were waiting to see it and all of a sudden a woman appears on stage and the wails start, man... Everyone clapped and shit but then it turns out the speakers weren't on and the actress hadn't arrived. Everyone ran... it was crazy. Also do you know about la planchada? That nurse 😨😨😨

In PR we have a folk tale that I think doesn’t have a name or I don’t remember the name but it was based on when Christopher Columbus came to PR and set up his army San Juan they built a wall to protect them from pirates, while one of the guards gets his girlfriend overnight in the wall and made out, the next day later the guard didn’t respond to a call from his general and he found his clothes in the floor and no sign of him

In Dominican Republic the two i can remember right now are: Los Bacás: basically demonic familiars summoned with witchcraft And La Ciguapa: is like a siren but with legs and the feets were backward and only appeared at night to lure men. We Argentinans don't have the tale of la llorona... we actually had people breaking into our houses to kidnap us, torture us and finally kill us with guns/throwing us into El Rio de la Plata by plane/ we got rescued... Amo esto porque recientemente hice una mini encuesta en mi instagram sobre que versiones de la llorona conocian, asi que les dejo las dos versiones que yo más escuché (pasadas de boca en boca durante la escuela primaria) version 1: la llorona se iba a casar con un hombre muy bello y muy rico pero este la dejo en el altar. Por la verguenza que sintió se mató y ahora aparece en puentes, al lado de la ruta, cementerios, etc, buscando hombres para matar (en algunas versiones es porque cree que son su prometido, en otras porque sabe que no son y los mata de bronca(?)) version 2: el marido de la llorona mato a hachazos a sus hijos y prendio fuego la casa (no me acuerdo si la llorona muere en el incendio o se entera de lo que pasó y se suicida en el rio, creeeo que la 2ª); ahora secuestra niños para reemplazar a los suyos y mata hombres pensando que son su marido (esta es de las que más escuche por acá en Buenos Aires) En la encuesta esta que digo la mayoria conocia o ambas versiones o una variante de la primera version (donde la llorona mata a sus hijos y por eso ahora secuestra nenes); un par de personas me comentaron que solo conocian la version donde por equis motivo ella ahogaba a sus hijos (o los ahorcaba) EN FIN NADA ME PARECE RE INTERESANTE ESTO les dejo mil besis y que no se los coma la llorona mUACK

According to legend, the spirits of the drowned are summoned to the ship by Sirena Chilota, her sister Pincoya, and their brother Picoy. Sirena Chilota resembles what we know as mermaids, with the upper body and face of a teen, with long blond hair and golden scales. Pincoya is said to have long blond hair, be of incomparable beauty, be cheerful and sensual, and rise from the depths of the sea with her totally human like body. Picoy has the body of a sea lion with golden fur and the face of a strikingly attractive human man, with long blond hair. There appear to be two types of passengers aboard the luminous vessel. The spirits of those who drowned at sea are said to be able to continue their existence in a sort of paradise like existence, instead of being left lonely and cold in the ocean deeps. They are allowed according to some stories to even visit home once a year to give aid to their families. However there are also kidnapped fishermen who are kidnapped and forced to perform the duties as crew. The folklore also says that the evil Brujo Chilote, the equivalent to the male witch, likes to visit the party on the Caleuche. Although they are evil, they are welcome aboard the ship. They reach the Ship by summoning up a magical water horse which is said to be able to gallop upon the surface of the ocean.
