The thing about this movie is that it is unapologetic and straightforward about the subject. When you get a movie called "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ",it is not hiding what it's about. I saw this movie when I was a child. I stayed up late with my uncle one night and we watched it. I was about 9 years old. Afterwards I went to bed, unable to sleep. I kept staring at the closet door, thinking Leatherface was behind it. What I didn't know was that my uncle snuck out to my grandfather's garage, grabbed a chainsaw, and positioned himself outside of my bedroom window with it. He then started it up and I literally almost crapped my pajamas! I ran out of my room screaming. My uncle got into so much trouble for it! My grandmother yelled at him for hours for traumatizing her #1 grandchild. He did worse when I saw "The Exorcist". He snuck into my room, bent down and grabbed the bed frame and started violently shaking it. I still get a little jumpy around chainsaws because of him and this movie.

I saw this a number of times when I was younger on TV. It grossed me out, and I always had a few frights, but then, at 25, I saw it on the big screen, in an old, run-down cinema. When you can't escape the insanity, it turns you into a dribbling wreck. The joint second scariest film I have ever seen in the cinema, tied with The Shining (that sound. Oh my God, that sound) and beat only by the original Funny Games. No gore, no scares, yet so terrifying I fainted in the cinema.

It seems to be a common misconception by younger viewers that older horror films won't be scary, when the 70s and 80s had some of the most brutal horror films ever. Modern horror tends to be a lot glossier and geared towards teens, with loud noises and things popping out of the dark for momentary startled reactions. Hereditary was the last film I saw that really went for a seventies-style approach, with constantly building dread instead of jump scares.

I've never seen an older movie that was actually scary or disturbing. Scary movies didn't get "scary" until jumpscares started happening. This isn't like in the movies where a woman sees a killer and buries her face in her boyfriends chest out of fear, that shit never happened. Point being, scary movies have never actually been scary, just gory with terrible sound effects (especially the older movies). This is why scary video games actually work since you're the one in control and actually feel vulnerable.

My family had an audio video business when I was a kid, so we had a VCRs in the 70s before there were video rental shops. My dad would get bootleg movies from customers that were using the first portable VCR cameras to film them in the theaters. The first movies I remember us having bootlegs of were Star Wars, The Exorcist, Enter the Dragon, West World....And the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And then there were the videos hidden behind the records, like Candy Strippers and Flesh Gordon. My parents would put us to bed then watch scary movies, but I would sneek downstairs and watch through the crack in the living room door....talk about scary, sitting in the dark hiding at 5-6 years old getting the poop scared out of me. The house in the movie was just outside of Austin where I live, and I was an extra in part 2. It was a long fun day watching them film a scene outside an old chainsaw lawnmower shop that was on the edge of downtown Austin. That store was an actual business that was probably from the 20s.

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Psycho" were partially based on serial killer Ed Gein (wearing skin, grave digging). There's a lesser known film called "Deranged" that stays very close to Ed Gein's story. If you watch "Deranged", there are some very good and quick documentaries on Ed Gein's reign of terror to follow-up on after the movie. The most terrifying part of "Deranged" is the fact that it's a true story.

Pointless stuff: When Leatherface is chasing Sally, she really was running into branches and thorns because she couldn't see. Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface) had to occasionally stop and cut some random stuff so that he wouldn't catch up to her. The actor playing Grandpa was only 19 years old at the time. The actor playing Franklin was a method actor and stayed in character the whole time on set. He was always acting like a real douche and the cast couldn't stand him. Marilyn Burns is the greatest scream queen/final girl of all time. Her "doppler effect" running scream was parodied in The Return Of the Killer Tomatoes. An interesting fact, is that Gunnar Hansen's performance as Leatherface wasn't just about donning a mask and carrying on a chainsaw; No, but the director of the film Tobe Hooper gave the actor free rein to interpret his role as he wanted and gave Leatherface the personality he desired. Because of this, Hansen chose that Leatherface would be a mentally disabled and speechless man; This is why before filming his scenes the actor visited an asylum several times in order to learn the movements and behaviors of the admitted patients. Also the film is partially based or inspired on real events, specifically on the crimes of serial killer Ed Gein, who also inspired other iconic horror movie villains, such as Norman Bates from Psycho (1960).

A common misunderstanding with this movie is how the owner of gas station is related to Leatherface and the hitchhiker, most people assume he's their father, but the director/cowriter Tobe Hooper said he's actually their older brother.

Before I watch your reaction to this film, I wanted to tell you a couple of things from here in America. Firstly, when it came out to be viewed by the public in theatres, most theatres would not show it, and so it sort of went into "oblivion." But secondly, the film does Not show a lot of gore as everyone was told and still today most people imagine actually takes place. The story, of course, implies from the acting that the horrific gore is all there to see. But it is the story, acting, and "implied" actions that people imagine in their minds what is going on. Nevertheless, it is a classic horror, probably considered one of the most horrific films made in the history of independent film making. Well, here goes. Let's see what you experience!

Fun fact, the finger cutting scene actually happened. The scene was filmed on a particularly hot shoot (around 110 degrees Fahrenheit) that lasted 27 hours, most if not all of the cast had suffered a severe mental breakdown at this point and leatherface (played by Gunner Hansen) was so done with the scene that he would do literally anything to get it completed. The finger slicing scene was meant to use a safe prop knife (as in a knife covered in a protective layer of tape) and a fake blood pump next to her finger, but due to the heat the pump would always fail come the moment. So Gunner after several dozen attempts, decided to sneakily remove the safety tape without telling anyone, and intentionally sliced Sally's (Marylin Burn's) finger open for real. Also Marylin genuinely injured her leg during the window escape scene, the harness used for the meathook scene was nylon which was tied in a way that was genuinely agonizing and Gunner injured his leg during the climax (the protective plate that stopped the chainsaw cutting his leg off heated up far quicker than expected and gave him severe burns. Meaning that if there is a scream of pain in this movie, there's a good chance it's real.

1:08 - "This is based on real events?" - Not really. It was inspired by a real person, Ed Gein, who would rob graves and make things out of the bones. He also confessed to killing two women. Everything else about this movie is pure fiction. 6:18 - "And no back top." - It's called a "halter top" or a "halterneck". They're still around, but not as popular as they were back then. 16:40 - "Is it cordless? The chainsaw is cordless?" - You could say that, it runs on gasoline. Like a lawn mower, you fill it up with gas, then pull the cord to start it. Actually, gas-powered chainsaws are MUCH more common than electric ones, even today. I saw this movie after I'd already seen Halloween, Friday the 13th, and a bunch of other horror movies. We had HBO, and every month, I'd watch every horror movie that they aired. When my family got our first VCR, we started renting various movies, and I picked this one. I'd heard how this movie was one of the most shocking, and scary movies ever made. You can sleep tight, Dasha 😉❤️ Chainsaws runs on gasoline, the family are inbreed cannibals and you would totally rock in short shorts and a top with nothing on the back 😉😍💓😍💓🔥🙂 There are sequels, a remake with a prequel, a prequel & two requels, but the only one that's actually good is the 2nd movie - sure, it's more comedic than the 1st movie, but it's more gory & it's so over the top, but funny as hell! 😂 The 3rd movie is ok too, I would recommend them & skip the rest. I know many like the remake, but it's not that memorable, but the prequel is actually a much, MUCH BETTER & more believable origin story than the Leatherface 2017 movie! (Which is suppose to be the origin story for the original movie)

Ed Gein only killed one person. He was grave robber.

Semi trucks are notoriously slow in low gear, Leatherface could easily jump on the stepsides and attack them during that time, that's why they don't just drive away in the semi.

It's my favourite horror film of all time. The original is the classic, but I'm one of those people who really liked the remake.

I am too, I thought the remake was well done and a great watch.

Having grown up with this movie, your reaction was pretty much like mine, the first time I saw it.😊

Even though this is ridiculous and gory, very very scary, the most scary movie I've ever watched was "Sinister".

This movie is based on actual events. There's also a remake from 2003.
