This is my favourite horror movie. The effects, lighting, direction, score, sound design, the camera work, and Baby Bruce. Linda's iconic "We're gonna get you.." is on par with Nightmare on Elm Street's "1, 2, Freddy's coming for you..". You are correct about it being the first of its kind, creating the whole "cabin in the woods" horror genre. The fact this was basically a low-budget student film is astonishing, considering its execution and cultural impact on the film industry. FYI, Part 2 has a 10 minute recap of part 1 as the opening, but due to Sam Raimi not having rights to footage from the 1st film, they had to reshoot, recast, and simplify the storyline so people who hadn't seen it could catch up. So that will assuage your confusion. I make sense of it by thinking of it as Ash having a nightmare about the events of the first film (up until he wakes up in part 2 in the chair), and dreams are often not a faithful retelling of events. The fact that Ash's mind is also greatly impacted makes him a semi-unreliable narrator, so that works too. Ash is one of the best final girls ever. Imagine having to kill your best friend, sister, and girlfriend? His character development throughout the franchise is iconic.

I'm very impressed how you handled this one, Dasha. And, perhaps Ash did survive. The sequel, Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, took a sharper turn towards comedy horror, actually considered the best of the series by many. Considering how well you handled yourself with the original, I think the sequel should work just fine for you. However, it does open with a stripped down retelling of the original film before picking up the sequel story, removing all characters but Ash and Linda for the retelling portion at the beginning of the film, just so you don't get confused as I've seen some reactors get. Again, well done, luv.

I think you better watch Evil Dead 2 it's more of a remake / sequel. And it's more of a comedy horror than just a straight-up horror than the first one.

This might have been explained to you already, but the film series started out as a short film called Within the Woods they made for $1600 which was pretty much the same concept. They then were able to use the interest that generated to acquire $90,000 initial funding for this movie which you just watched. This movie was then shown at Cannes where Stephen King saw it and his rave review resulted in them being able to acquire considerably more funding to make what became Evil Dead II which is somewhat confusing in that they actually use the first part of Evil Dead II to reboot this first movie before then continuing on to add onto the story in the second half of it. Evil Dead II is actually more like the second first Evil Dead and while also being the first second Evil Dead. Oh and it's all worth it to get us to the third movie, Army of Darkness.

If I may make a suggestion... try to watch "Evil Dead 2" as soon as possible now. It actually got a lot of praise when it premiered, even from some of the harshest Movie Critics. Even the Critics who HATE Horror Movies, they genuinely liked the movie. There is more comedy in the 2nd film, and Bruce Campbell is just amazing in that movie. If you are able, I would try to watch Evil Dead 2 as soon as you can. It does follow the first movie a little bit, too.

While there are 1000s of great horror films, I've compiled an essential viewing list of genre-creating/defining, iconic, impactful horror films in pop culture. (You've probably already seen some.) I'm talking the BIG films that everyone on the street knew about. These films inform every other horror film/trope, and mostly spawned franchises. If you start with these, everything else will fall into place. 1961 Psycho 1968 Rosemary's Baby 1968 Night of the Living Dead 1972 Deliverance 1973 The Exorcist 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1975 Jaws 1976 The Omen 1978 Halloween 1979 Alien 1980 Friday the 13th 1981 The Evil Dead 1982 Poltergiest 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street 1996 Scream 1999 The Blair Witch Project 2004 Saw 2007 Paranormal Activity Plus one of my personal favourites: The Haunting 1963 (was adapted into the netflix series House on Haunted Hill).

I used to volunteer at a Detroit area theater that mostly ran classic films until Sam Raimi, who was from nearby, rented it to have the world premiere of this film. He was about 21 then. He later did some other filming in the area and I was able to watch him at work and even sat through some "dailies". He seemed to be having quite a bit of fun. As others will tell you, the sequel is more like a remake of the original, but with a bigger budget and more comedy. The first film shows you what he could do, the second does it. It is arguably the better of the two, although opinions vary. It is well worth watching all three.

" Gimme some sugar baby!" 😅. This trilogy started it all! Over the top gore, comedy, cosplay shows, horrorplay, u name it! Watch everything the actor Ash has done! He was first in Jurassic Park before Jurassic Park, Congo! He also did a George Washington spy TV show, and a Western sheriff show, and Ash vs evil dead series was great! It ended a few years ago, I still don't know why! But Bruce Campbell was amazing in all ways....like the Jim Carey of horror/comedy! I have a couple friends that met him, got pics, autographs, everything with him! And of course the great Sam Raimi and his brother did this, first Spider-Man movie, The grudge, drag me to hell, and others! Sam and his brother shot this with barely any money, but it cleaned up so much at the box office, the production and distribution company wanted to own it and them! He said, F.cknoff! And renamed the title and did part two as a bit of a retelling of this one, but more of his weird camera work, gore, and comedy relief!! Not to blow it for u, but there's a scene in part 2, that should make you Raalllph!!🤮 Pro tip....the car is in all 3 and the net series 😮😮😮 this movie and series really changed camera work and gore horror effects, in all horror movies forever! Bruce Campbell is a national treasure! He and the Raimí brothers have been friends since HS, and bruce is truly the Jim Carey of horror before there was a Jim Carey! Sam Raimi was visionary! His gore effects, practical effects, camera angles and work, was totally different! Like when Ash has his back against the door, and the arms come through the door, look closely.... he's laying down!

A horror classic. Super cheap and amateur style, it is Sam Raimi's first movie, and he and his friends funded it by basically going door-to-door and asking local businesses for cash. The camera angles and movement are very unconventional and add to the disorienting and off-kilter nature of the movie. Back in the late 90s, I used to work at a summer camp where kids would come in on Sunday and leave the following Saturday, leaving that night free for staff. The camp was also split into two named sides. One weekend we got a bunch of people together in one of the staff cabins and watched this, which I already loved at the time. Despite everyone mocking the low budget, no one was in a rush to leave the cabin and go back to theirs (some of which were on the complete other side of camp). It was quite satisfying to see people who had just been talking smack taking their sweet time to go outside in the dark. XD
