The standout element at most comic conventions is the cosplay.
Cosplay - short for "costume play" - is a subculture for "superfans" who wear and create costumes - often by hand - of their favorite fictional characters.
"You can think of it as Halloween because you get to be a character you're not normally," said a featured cosplayer at this weekend's convention. "So you get to be somebody else, which is always fun."
She creates her costumes from scratch and has been cosplaying since she learned about the concept at another Texas convention.
She said some people cosplay full-time. She does it as a hobby but hopes to establish a fan base using her cosplay name, Scarlet Knight.
"Basically, anything that you love as part of your fandom, you can dress up as that character" from a comic book, a TV show or movie, she said. "And what's cool that there is even a lot of people that will actually create their own variant of that costume."
