Irish spelling can be scary but as well as that middle 'gh' being silent the 'dh' at the end is also silent so Lughnasadh is just pronounced like 'Luna-sa'. Fun fact, not only only does the word Lughnasadh refer to the festival, it is the word for the month of August in modern Irish!

In Germany Lammas is called the "Schnitterfest" which roghly translates to the fest of the cutter (Schnitter being the name of the people that do the wheat harvesting around this time) Also, another tradition that most likely stems from the ancient germanic people of germany is the assembly of an herb bundle called "Würzbüschel" in August. Typically 9 different herbs were gathered on a thursday morning (most likely to call upon the hollowing qualities of the god thor or german Donar) and strung into bundles that were then often hung in barns or attics to protect against thunder storms, illness or bad spirits. Also the last grains harvested were thrown back into the fields to give thanks to Frija(norse Frigg, and nowdays most known as the mythical Frau Holle in the fairytales of the brothers Grimm) and her husband Wotan(Odin). Along this typically a prayer was said. What I find interesting is that some of these prayers have been preserved in low german dialects. Anyways I just wanted to share some info on this holiday from another perspective.

I've been given to understand it's pronounced loon-uh-suh. I dismiss 'Lammas' as the name for this holiday because of its association with Christianity, and just go with Lughnasadh (I'm a Druid). There is an association with athletic competition and this holiday, because Lugh threw funeral games in honor of his beloved late foster mother around this time of year. Lugh was known as 'Samildenach' (I *think* I got close to the proper spelling). That word roughly translates as 'the Master of Every Art.' Lugh was one of those people who's perfectly excellent at a whole bunch of things, the kind of guy who makes you feel inferior, just by being within ten feet of Him. Someone to emulate and be inspired-by. I sometimes happily refer to this Pagan High Holiday, unofficially, as 'the Feast of Carbohydrates', and I think it might catch-on more with non-Pagans if it were known by that term. Seriously, Pagans could do a lot of good PR for Paganism in general if we threw Carbohydrate Festivals in the first half of August, featuring outdoor games and all kinds of baked goods, and invited the general public. I'll probably bake an orange cake with orange frosting, my chosen carb, in honor of this holiday. Lughnasadh was the first Pagan High Holiday I celebrated after I turned Pagan, so it has a special place in my heart.

I actually bake with corn rather than wheat for Lammas. We have a ton of local corn available in South Carolina, so that is my chosen "harvest" food. I cannot wait to kick off the harvest season!!

My public group absolutely does 'games' in its Lughnasadh rituals! Our rituals are written fresh each time, but many of these rites have featured activities like cardboard-tube fencing, divination skills, running up a hill with a cucumber between your knees, darts, and watermelon seed spitting!

Greetings from Scotland! Dundee to be precise. I'd never heard of this ancient Scottish tradition but it sounds like it would be a lot of fun! Can't say I know anything about it taking place these days unfortunately... To be honest, we're never taught anything like this in schools - it's pretty much just William Wallace and that's about it... I'm a huge fan of your work as it's helping me understand my Pagan ancestry more (family is primarily from Scotland but my surname came from the Isle of Man) Looking forward to your next video :)

Excellent points on Lughnasadh. We incorporate baking a bread man which we call a John barleycorn into our Sabbat as a coven. he is passed around ritually and considered a sort of sacrifice as all of us break pieces off of him and eat him and then give back to the Gods.

Lunastal is my favorite holiday! I am sooo glad you talked about the ancient Irish funerary games dedicated to Lug's foster mother- they're extremely underrepresented in today's Pagan community and mostly unknown, unfortunately. They're also very important to Ireland's sense of nationhood and was revived in the early 1900's (complete with Druids opening the ceremony) during a time when Ireland felt defeated and lost and needed a sense of pride and renewal (but then the Church shut it back down). In a perfect Pagan world, we can revive these Olympic-style games or have that Puck Fair in America, too! Anyway, Lug's one of my main deities and would love to watch you talk more on him. Good luck with your move! By the way, are you still involved as a mod on r/paganism on Reddit? I feel bad for Sammy, I kinda got overwhelmed with life stuff and fell off the bandwagon on that one!

hi! this is an off topic question, but i wanted to become a pagan/wiccan/practice witchcraft (i’m not sure which yet haha...). i was wondering, which am i considered? i believe in secular paganism, so i associate with the values of being kind to nature and to all living things, but i believe that dieties are more of stories that tell lessons and not a literal thing. would i be considered a pagan? as i still worship the gods and goddesses, just not in the same way.
